Chimes kinda sucks. You might as well go to a Chili's.

Ruffino's is my favorite in BR.

Corny's Cornarific Corndog Emporium and Washateria is the place you want to go to, easily the best breaded impaled sausage in the NW Baton Rouge Corn Dog district.

O.M.G.

Okay, I am impressed.

I was going to recommend Himels - pronounced ee-mel's for those not familiar. But I figured it would be too much to explain, since it was off the beaten path and about 25 miles from BR on River Road.

That place is an institution! Where do I begin? The batter they use on their fried shrimp, catfish, everything, is nectar of the gods. Unreal! The waitresses have worked there since 1897. It's in a quaint part of Louisiana. You get to see beautiful old plantations, lots of sugarcane, and big ole plants on the Mighty Mississippi.

Good recommendation!

Lived there for 8 years, best food is Sammy's, when I go back still try to eat there. My second choice is the Mike Anderson's in Gonzales, LA. It's about 15-20 min drive toward New Orleans on I-10. The restaurant is in the Holiday Inn. Though the menu is the same as the one in BR, the food is better.

I will have to check out Hymel's at some point. I will have to give Chimes another try. I thought it was okay. Have family members who think it is great. Guess I am not as stoked about it as they are though.

Wherever you go from this list of recommendations, I guarantee you'll be happy. But my top recs in BR proper are: Chimes, Fleur de Lis and Pastime. If you're willing to drive a little, Himel's on River Road. Have fun.

Can't speak for NO, but I know there's a Mulate's in Breaux Bridge...always good every time I've eaten there, but it's about an hour from Baton Rouge.

On your way back to TX... stop at exit to Lafayette on your right. There is a red & white gas station right off I-10. One of those hidden local gems...

Dude, if you're looking for some really authentic cajun / creole food. Juban is the best - hands down.

Those other joints are good but they're either Mexican / BBQ / Italian or second rate cajun.

You can get MUCH better TexMex/BBQ just about anywhere in Tejas than you can find in RedStick.
