Cannon's homer and four RBIs lifts Aggie softball past Sam Houston, 6-2
Texas A&M softball (16-8) displayed pure dominance against Sam Houston (9-15) on Tuesday evening at Davis Diamond, racking up a 6-2 win over the Bearkats to counter a three-game losing streak.
“We really needed that win after a disappointing weekend at Auburn. It was really nice to come right back and get a win against a quality opponent,” Texas A&M head coach Jo Evans said postgame. “I thought Grace Uribe did a really nice job in the circle by eating up a lot of innings for us tonight and letting our other pitchers have some rest.”
Uribe pitched the entire game, helping the Aggies maintain a chokehold on the Bearkats. Uribe threw two strikeouts and allowed only three walks and five hits to keep Sam Houston in check.
The A&M offense started hot with a Koko Wooley single followed by an RBI double from Trinity Cannon, setting the tone for the rest of the evening as the Aggies tallied hits. Wooley hit an RBI single in the second inning to boost the A&M lead.
In the third inning, Cannon smashed a homer to center to bring the Aggies up 4-0. Morgan Smith followed suit with a single up the middle, forcing Sam Houston to make a switch in the circle in an attempt to stop A&M’s progress.
“This morning, we really worked on barrel control, and that’s something I struggled with this weekend,” Cannon said of her batting performance today. “Coming into the game today, I was focusing not so much on the outcome, but what I was doing at the plate.”
The Bearkats hit their stride in the sixth inning with a two-run single, but that was all for the visiting offense.
A sacrifice fly earned Cannon her fourth RBI of the game, sending Makinzy Herzog home once more at the bottom of the sixth.
In the seventh, the Bearkats seemed poised to score following a double and a walk that put runners at second and third. However, ground out to Wooley ceased their progress and secured a Texas A&M victory.
The Aggies return to SEC play this Friday at 6 p.m. to start off a three-game series at home against No. 4 Florida.
