Ford & Co. set for test with No. 1 Longhorns in Austin Super Regional

Two schools separated by about 100 miles will meet on the diamond with a trip to the Women's College World Series on the line. On Wednesday, head coach Trisha Ford joined TexAgs Radio to preview the matchup between the No. 16 Aggies and No. 1 Longhorns.

Key notes from Trisha Ford interview

  • I feel good. Friday’s night game vs. UAlbany made me nervous. It wasn't the score. It was how we played. Our team responded well. I knew Texas State would be a hard one. Jessica Mullins was fresh. We were able to screech by. Sunday, we handled things well.

  • We started the year with Kennedy Powell and Koko Wooley at the top of the lineup. As the year went on, things adjusted. Powell has started to find her juice. She has risen to the occasion. We wanted to force their hands this weekend with our speed at the top of the lineup. Powell and Koko are dynamic, and then you bring in the horses after that, who can bang the ball out.

  • Trinity Cannon is having a tremendous year. There is no panic. Every hitter goes through the season and has ups and downs. Last year, she hit a struggle moment and panicked. This year, she has worked through it. Her slump was very small.

  • Koko Wooley is dynamic. She can short-game you, hit the ball off the wall and out of the park. She makes things happen. When she is executing, we have a really good chance of winning. She is our starter of the chaos.

  • We are a group that played well. We are raising the level of Aggie softball here in College Station.

  • The 12th Man showed out this year. This weekend was a pretty loud group. I was happy because it was warm, and we budded up with baseball.

  • That stadium has only 1,200 seats. We only get 100 tickets, and everything else is “sold out.” Funny how that works.

  • It started with Shaylee Ackerman and Emily Leavitt taking that first game. That was huge for us. It allowed us to rest her so Emiley Kennedy could go on Saturday and Sunday.

  • Kennedy was lights out. On Saturday, when she started off, she was trying to overthrow a little bit. There was excitement. This is the first time she’s been at home for regionals, and then she just mowed them down. Our defense played really well. Kramer Eschete threw a kid out at first.

  • I was watching film with the staff, and I told Kennedy, “Did you bring clothes if we go to the ‘if’ game?” She said, “There will be no ‘if’ game.”

  • Our team is excited and feeling good. Clicking on our cylinders is what you want to do going into supers. We are peaking at the right time. We are going to make some noise at that other place.

  • We will leave on Thursday morning. We will practice at 12:30 p.m. We will play at 5:00 p.m on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday. TBD on Sunday.

  • Texas is super athletic. They have a combination of speed and power from top to bottom. They have four pitchers who can really contribute. They are young, so hopefully, we will take advantage of that.

  • We are excited. We play really well as the underdog. The good thing is a lot of our players grew up playing against these players, there is not that “Ooo, we are playing the No. 1 team.” It’s “We are playing Susie, who I grew up beating.”

  • I’m excited. It’s going to be good for the state of Texas. I don't know, I think the Ags may surprise some people.

  • I am so excited for coach Mark Weaver. Women’s golf continues to be the best. I am the newbie right now, and I am trying to keep up with everyone in the spring sports.
