Kilgore, Texas
The Dean Keener Crim Home

Kilgore's oldest home, it was built two years after the International Railroad platted a townsite in 1874 on Buck Kilgore's farm land.

S. G. Dean bought one acre just east of the tracks and north of the station in 1876 for $45 and erected a one story, tworoom house constructed of pine and oak lumber. The home featured a covered front porch.

In 1881, Dean transferred his improved acre to L. J. and Allie Keener for $300.

The Keeners added the two-story, four-bedroom west wing, with each bedroom containing a fireplace.

In 1902, Wiley Newton Crim and his wife, Eudora, bought the home. They added the east side screen porch and extended a roofed porch across the back. It enclosed the still working well that draws water up by a hand-operated pulley that includes a rope and bucket.

The oil boom put seven oil wells in the Crim's yard.

The Crim family occupied the home until 1999. W. N. and Eudora's two daughters, Mabel Crim and Alleyn Crim lived in the home. Mabel was a recognized gardener, while Alleyn loved to cook.

You learn all sorts of things by cruising around Google maps. Like the fact that there's a neat little marker where Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana meet right here near the highway. And there is a tree planted right there! (Was it planted by someone in that spot knowingly or did there just happen to be a tree there? I don't know.)

Richard Henry Wood House
Port Aransas, Rockport,Texas

Born in 1846, Richard Henry Wood was one of the first residents of Rockport. In 1866, Wood partnered with James Doughty and built the first cattle pens, warehouse and wharf at Rockport harbor. Wood ran his business until the 1919 hurricane destroyed many of his holdings. Wood was appointed alderman in 1870 and later served as Mayor of Rockport. He also initiated the Texas Game and Fish Commission in 1907. The 1868 house exhibits many characteristics of Greek revival architecture style, including its white color, columns and wide board and batten siding. Until his death in 1923, Richard Wood's roles as a land developer, rancher and civic leader influenced Rockport's early development and growth.

Erected 2018 by Texas Historical Commission. (Marker Number 19965.)

This house is believed to have been built about the turn of the century. Area sawmil owner and road builder William E. Bumpus and his wife Catherine (Harris) purchased he property in 1927. The Bumpus House is a well-preserved example of a large dwelling with colonial revival details (dormers, gable ends) and craftsman influences (tapered box supports on brick piers). A local landmark, the house remained in the Bumpus family until 1987. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1994. **NOTE - The Bumpus House was destroyed by fire in August 2013. The Gladewater Museum received permission to recover and hold the Texas Historical Marker and is in the museum's possession at this time.

WS Beauford Halbert Jester House Corsiana

Halbert House
Corsicana, Texas
Built in 1890

Anson William Halbert, born in 1774 in Essex County, Virginia, married Elizabeth Hill in 1765. This couple had 10 children and many grandchildren, one of whom was Lucius Nash Halbert, who married Rebecca Alford in Mississippi. In 1849, this young couple and their baby son, Halkert Alford "H. A." (1849-1927), moved to Texas.
When Halkert was a young man, he moved to Corsicana to begin the practice of law and to publish a newspaper, "The Corsicana Light." He also was the author of an almanac which gave weather forecasts gleaned from the heart of an oak tree, and to which many people looked for guidance in planting and growing crops.
