It's a cute take I guess, and there's a little truth to it, but the reality is that John David Crow was a merc and our best players in the 70s were mercs and everyone worth a damn under Jackie were mercs... It's really always been this way it's just more open now.

If you really want to fall in love with a player who is in it for completely unselfish reasons, go hug a bullpen catcher.

Interesting you did choose to use the word "raised", but place all the ire in your rant on the kids and not the generation that was handing out the trophies because they couldn't bear to see their kid come in second

You are right the best players have always been mercs, but it was done out of sight out of mind and it was not a whole team holding a school amd its fanbase hostage. I get saying hey we want this coach back, got no problem with that, and leadership was obviously okay after the interview with bringing him back. So now that it has happened show your loyalty to the school and get rolling. School showed loyalty to you, time to shut up and put out. Unlimited transfers and pay to play have ruined college sports for me. I get it, the players want a piece of the pie and this is the only way the schools could do it. Sucks because for me it has ruined what college sports could and should be for the non athlete students, alumni, and tshirt fans.

Didn't blame anyone, it is what it is, the product of a screwed up system. I don't like it, did not raise my kids that way, in fact stopped having them participate in YMCA sports leagues because of the no score, no winner/loser, nonsense. We went to Dad's club in Pearland and travel ball where competition existed. Though from what I hear even all of that has some underlying pay to play these days. Be it with discounted team fees, or other perks. Oh well I have no skin in the game, will root for the name on the front of the jersey that is all I can do.

He has been alarmingly quiet. Haven't seen a tweet or retweet about the Earley hire. Concerned.

Because $$$$ that's why.

They're negotiating NIL deals.

Exactly, nothing more than mercs. Use the NIL money to replace them. They got what they wanted and then reneged and wanted more. Ags can buy a new team just as good as this one. NIL has destroyed college sports there is no going back. Mercenaries is all they are now.

This is the worst take I've seen. In no way a shot at you personally but this notion of "they abandoned us" doesn't work now. You will not find a roster as talented as ours in the portal right now. It doesn't exist. You get the guys you recruited back because you know they play well together and know your program. You do not give up on a championship roster. Sometimes this site still surprises me, in a bad way, with the amount of negativity.

Edited because on second read it was harsh and that was not my intention.

I dont take things out here personally, and did not think it was harsh. But to say the Aggies cannot buy a team out of the portal as good as this one, yet that is exactly what is happening. Yes some of those players are the same as the ones that asked for and received their favorite coach back. College sports used to be about the name on the front of the Jersey, now it is nothing but money that matters. The whole lot of them are mercenaries and that is fine that is what things have become. Poor entitled brats were raised on getting a trophy win or lose and money is the new trophy. Fine buy the new team I will cheer from afar but like with football and every other sport at that level I won't be taking anything personal and wont be claiming the proverbial "we". Just like I views the pros sports. That is my take, personal to me, if it is a bad one in your opinion that is fine. I don't care enough about it anymore to consider it a harsh opinion, just a different one.

I think his point was that the top tier of players in the portal are players from our roster. With the exception of a couple positions you would not be able to "buy a better team" because the inventory is not there.

Excellent point. I think in the future there will not be many B-Mont, Tommy Tanks, Skenes type players in the portal year in and year out. POS leaving for Austin put at least a couple of such players out there, hopefully the Earley hire will bring most of them back to Olsen.

With NIL money, and good coaching, staying in college for a couple more years is probably better for many of these kids than going pro to work on your skills in single A (or even double-A.

Is Jackson looking into coming back? I thought he was moving on to his next chapter.
jackson is an interesting one because he is fully capable of playing pro ball, and is an incredible college player. However his draft stock is not high enough to where it is a no brainer. He could potentially make more money from NIL this year than his highest paid season in pro ball. So it's not completely out of the question.
(ps I don't think Appel is going to fail in the big leagues, I'm just saying he isn't going to get a massive contract)
You didn't say anything wrong. Don't apologize.

Appel is one of those rare instances of being a better college player than projected to be a pro. All American SEC catcher that doesn't have the power or stature or maybe even arm to project as a high pro draft pick. It's crazy, but it is what it is. And I'm not sure there's anything the kid can do about it. Another year probably doesn't change any of that, but he could be an All American again and be a leader this team really needs for another run to Omaha.

Asch might be another as well.

Love the last line.

Reality is the players haven't changed. What has changed is the rules that you don't have to sit out a year which was a huge deterrent. It didn't make the players love the school anymore, they sucked it up because not playing wasn't a good option. I'm sure there were lots of players wishing they were somewhere else but had to sleep in the beds they initially made.

College parties
Friends
Don't have to live at hosts houses
Facilities
NIL
Coeds galore
SEC / TV / Big Time

The only good thing from NIL is it gives the middle finger to MLB.

Exactly.

There a young man I've known since he was a kid that plays Single -A ball now. That's exactly what he says. Little towns, nothing to do. Meager facilities. He lives in someone's little cottage house in town. Not horrible, but not nearly as awesome as college.

Wondering if they might not have a release schedule set up to keep the media train rolling? Schott, then Gavin, then Jace, Presser... then Sorrell, Aschenbeck, etc., etc.

Us as well. Neighbors and their son (my son's good friend) is triple A with Detroit but spent the past 7 years in the minors. He made the right choice out of high school as he was early 2nd round, but he has to regret not playing college ball a little bit. No NIL back then but he signed for something like $1.4z

The amount of Twitter "experts" who are saying 'they know stuff' but respect people too much to leak things before they happen today is just crazy off the charts...

When last Friday these same people were REAL damn quick to leak our hiring of Heefner, no Walter, no Skip, oh wait it's uhh....

The internet is dum.

The point was staff has not commented on ANYTHING. All week. So why do you think it's a bad sign that they haven't commented on a Sorrell thread? Because they didn't comment on transfer portal threads, or Jace threads, or Gavin threads.

It is exceedingly rare that staff comments on forum8. They just don't.

So don't read anything into it.

Yes and No.

Remember, MLB had like 50 Rounds and cast a huge net.

You players had 2 options

- get a partial scholly to play college... and by partial, we're talking what?! 1/3 scholly. If your parents were rich enough they could pay the difference.
- get drafted and play for $3k/mo in small towns living off whatever free food you could.

Title IX limits the scholarships, so it isn't MLB's fault.

After Money Ball... more teams started to draft players out of college.

With NIL and how they structure money in MiLB... MLB has restructured the MiLB organization and eliminated the NWL and many teams. They also reduced the # of Rounds in the draft, thus reducing the opportunity attached to MLB teams.

Players now have more reason to go to college if they want to play, even without NIL.

MLB may actually start to use College players more and more like other sports. Don't be surprised if the 3 yr rule in college goes away.

That would have the biggest difference in building college baseball with NIL as the cherry on top.
