If you're a LHP you're here to pitch, not run. Pretty simple. Yes, most are athletic, but if you're a LHP it's not like you're playing middle infield on your off days. You're playing RF, 1B, maybe CF or you're just pitching. Probably the latter.

There's a difference between a midweek game and opening night when adrenaline should be flowing.

I played with multiple pitchers that could barely walk and chew gum at the same time, but they could get hitters out.

Sloppy play against a lesser opponent is is sloppy play whether it is midweek or opening day.
