Something tells me winning a championship is tough when your entire coaching staff is thinking about (and recruiting for) their next gig at a rival school they'll be in direct competition with in the same conference.

Add to it that (allegedly) a few select players on the current team knew the coaches were leaving and were being recruited to transfer with them.

I'm guessing they'll move Harrison and Riojas up in the rotation and have TBA for Sunday.

Will be very curious how they manage it though, as they rely heavily on Grubbs and Volantis to be their workhorses in the bullpen. I believe Grubbs was a starter last season so he would make sense to slide into the Sunday role but he may be too valuable in relief for them to feel comfortable doing that.

After those two, there best two on paper are Bing and Flores. But looking further into that, it seems like they are primarily midweek guys.

Grubbs and Volantis have 36.0 and 34.1 IP respectively. The next reliever who has regularly pitched weekends lately is Burns with only 12.2 IP so far.

Their 3 starters, Grubbs and Volantis make up for the lions share of their weekend IP. Taking 5-6 IP away from that with Spencer out is going to cause them to rely on those guys even more than usual, and hopefully have to rely on some low leverage guys in high leverage situations.

They want to use Volantis like we used Aschenbeck last year. He has typically been pitching on Fridays and Sundays, usually after 6-7 inning starts by Spencer and Riojas.

Would keep an eye on if Bing and Flores pitch for them tonight.

I know this is a gross exaggeration of an example but in the national championship Tennessee won the whole thing late in game 1. They ended up losing the game but forced us to to go Ausch a lot earlier than we wanted…which forced Cortez to go longer in game 2 which depleted us completely by game 3. They lost the battle but won the war due to what happened earlier in the series

Hopefully we get up early in game 1 and force them to burn some of their plus arms OR ride with lesser arms trying to steal some outs and we make them pay

I'm not certain they "forced" us to do either of those things. Certainly not CC in Game 2. That was a terrible managerial decision by Schloss when he could have forced them to use all their bullets when we were up 1 game, and instead we burned everything at a point where we didn't need to.

I was using it as an example simply bc we all watched it

Not a dissection of him doing it right or wrong rather just using the example generally that knocking into their pen early in the series could be beneficial in similar ways to the natty last year due to sdao being out. Not a full blown parallel that meets all the exact criteria and spiraled discussion on who did what right or wrong last year

Get to the pen early and burn up all high leverage arms and hopefully by Sunday they are asking pitcher #7-10 eat valuable innings. Nothing more nothing less

Brauny said he was down to 83 with his fastball on the mound last weekend. That usually suggest an arm injury of some sort.

100% an elbow issue. Caught at a high level and seen it before, and loss like that in velocity is almost always a UCL issue. Usually you can heal it with rest, but if it's a drop that drastic i'm guessing surgery.

Elbow issues can ruin a players future if pushed, something i'm sure douchnozzle cares nothing about.

Possibly. I would think that Cain and Weiner probably knew. Either way, my point remains.

Many things can be said about Schloss, but I don't believe he has ever put a player's career in jeopardy by pushing him to play through injury. To my recollection, he has always been pretty conservative on that standpoint.

Weiner did for sure. I'm not certain about Cain but he's not loyal to anything but his bank account anyway.

So they had 7 pitchers they could pitch confidently. We had 5 healthy ones. Now they have 6. Little more even.

The SEC Unfiltered guys said he's not pitching this week. I'm not sure if they have any actual insight or were just speculating, but I tend to agree. No need to rush your ace back when you're already almost guaranteed to be a national seed.

BUT if there was one opponent Schloss would buck his conventional wisdom for, it would be the one this weekend.

Word is he is going to see another doctor to get a second opinion which most people are interpreting to mean not good news.
I think it might be awesome news?!?!?!?!?

Let's not snoop down to that level.
I see the Winkey face but why post that?

That kid has obviously worked his ass off over the years and has a bright future. I'm not gonna gloat ( sarcasm or not) just because he wears a different uniform. And we may have some small advantage in a game due to his injury. Not worth it imo

I mean, I didn't bust out my voodoo doll and poke needles in the elbow, but at the same time I'm not sad some misfortune fell upon tu right before our series either. We've had our share of injuries and misfortunes and part of the game at this level is managing through it. Hopefully we do that better than that other coach does this weekend.

Schloss said he was just "sore". No idea what that means to swingers.

When u leave a game super early for pain in your arm.......when has that been a "sore" diagnosis?

No doubt he is out for an extended period, if not, season.

We are catching sips on the perfect weekend. I truly feel a sweep coming.

Yeah it sounds like he's done for the year based on Schloss's weekly radio hit this morning.
Riojas is starting tomorrow and he said Flores will "probably" be the starter on Sunday so that'll be a Johnny Wholestaff game.

I'm starting to really like our chances to take 2 games this weekend.

It's going to be imperative to chase one of their Friday/Saturday starters early or make them make him eat innings even if he doesn't have it.

We can't let them just go Riojas - Volantis tomorrow and Harrison - Grubbs Saturday. That is what they're going to want to try and do and then just figure Sunday out in the moment having already won the series. Can't let it happen.

1000%

Need long quality ABs to drive pitch count up early. Good news is our ABs have looked very good lately and have been typical Earley-esque in terms of being selective with pitches and driving pitch counts up.

so this article from 2 weeks ago did not age well:

Texas baseball made a change to Jared Spencer's slider. He used it to dominate Georgia - Yahoo Sports

Max Weiner, the Longhorns' pitching coach, shifted his perspective when Spencer transferred from Indiana State over the offseason. "Instead of trying to throw it [slider] slow, he really just tells me, 'Grip it and rip it.' And that's what my plan is out there," Spencer said.

That's the important question. Sdao was dealing both out of the pen and as a starter

We have such an advantage this weekend. Perfect timing. This team had better pull it out! Earley can secure himself with all the doubters.

Texas isn't sure who they are going to bring out there on Saturday or even Sunday. Tomorrow's game will define that. Hopefully we can get their starter out by 3rd, if not 4th, and seriously force their hand with additional bull-pen players.

Sip #6-9 in their line-up are questionable hitters without much consistency. Their 9th is an automatic out pretty much. That's HUGE advantage A&M if they keep up the hitting streak.

If Earley is the guy, he has an IMMENSE opportunity to prove himself as a 1st year coach by taking out a POS Hall of Famer and former coaching mentor.

I'm not personally questioning Earley, been there, done that. Just stating the obvious.

That freshman from CA is doing the same thing with his slider. Weiner is about about metrics regardless what it does to your elbow or shoulder.
