I appreciated Chuck for being such a FIGHTER. Everyone remembers Byington's walk-off Grand Slam to beat the sips in the 1st game of the DH (followed by 3-run walk off in the second).

But do you recall this? We had been up 7-1 early in that game. Then the sips turned it around and eventually went into the 9th up 14-9. We scored 9 in the 9th to walk it off.

But a few innings earlier there was a contested call. We were down. Going NOWHERE in that game. Chuck friggin BLEW UP over this call. Threw a big-ass fit. And got tossed out of the game. Well right or wrong it seemed to light a fire under the Ags. The next at-bat Terry Taylor hit a 2-run shot and we were on the way back. 9 runs in the 9th and history was made. But Chuck watched it ALL from the locker room. AND he was the first one running out to talk **** to the sips when Byno hit the grand slam.

Chuck was a FIGHTER. There may have been several on that team who didn't even really like him that much. But I think they ALL respected the hell out of him for the fight he brought every day

CK was MLB Rookie of the Year and won several World Series. Best Aggie baseball player ever? He's up there.

Chuck was coaching a kids team the last time I saw him 4 or 5 years ago. Was glad to see him still involved.
94,95,96 with Minnesota, Chuck hit .312, .333, and .341. Best remembered as a Yankee, but those were his best prime years prior.

Never will forget his rookie year in MLB in the playoffs when he flashed the palms of his batting gloves to the camera on which he had written Gig'Em!

The Aggies were in the field when Chuck got tossed. He blew a gasket when he thought that the ump had called a sip safe on a play at second (Ags were trying to turn a double play). The sip stood on the bag as if he was safe, but the ump had called him out. In the confusion, Chuck mistakenly thought there had been a blown call and must have used the magic words because he was tossed quickly. After Chuck left the field, ump sees the sip standing on the bag, told him to get in the dugout because he was out.

There's a lesson in this story: while all you folks are trying to get the team hyped up, that's the last thing that they need. They need to just go out and do their job. Focus on one at bat or one pitch at a time, because if they do that, odds are good that we will win the series. We're better than the sips (especially if they don't have their Friday night starter). The last thing we need to do is get caught up in distractions.

I met him at Sam's Boat in Houston about 15 years ago. We talked about baseball for about 15 minutes. He was very nice and very friendly.
