The preseason tournaments like Amegy have really boomed over the last 10 years. Do you like the tournaments or would you prefer a big home and home series where we play at their ballpark one year and they come to Blue Bell the next?

I think our student athletes dig playing in major league ballparks for a handful of games each year often in front of pro scouts.

I wish we played in the MLB Desert Classic played at the various spring training stadiums around Phoenix.

Home and home please. I want to go see other ballparks!

I'm not a fan of college baseball in MLB stadiums.
3,000 fans in a 40,000 seat stadium creates a lifeless atmosphere.
I'd rather have home and home.
Been a season ticket holder for Aggie baseball since 1989
Teams I'm still waiting to see at Olsen Field
Florida State and Miami

Highly unlikely we would do a home and home in today's college baseball world. I think for the foreseeable future we're looking at snow-birding northern teams plus a tourney. My guess is the days of home-and-home with Arizona - like we did in the MJ days - are gone.

Since we're unlikely to make road trips to Pepperdine, Fullerton, or even somewhere like Southern Miss, I would like us switch up the tourneys we go to. Instead of Houston or Arlington every year, let's go to Jacksonville, the Phoenix area, Vegas, or somewhere more interesting than these events we've been going to for 20 years.

Doubtful we'd do that more than once or twice a decade. Even if we travel well, Arlington and Houston have a insanely large supply of Ags. Frankly, it doesn't make sense to go out of state.

When the 3 opponents are of the quality we're playing this weekend, there isn't a great reason to change.

I think they are great. You have the option to watch alot of quality teams each day. As a baseball fan, I enjoy seeing a random USC v GT game, etc. the same day I watch the Ags. Have to been to the tourneys in Houston, Frisco, and Arlington and really enjoyed each one.

These tourneys also help from an RPI standpoint. We're not taking the hit from home games, but we don't get the bump from a true road series every other year.

I don't disagree with any of this. I just want to go to Jacksonville or Phoenix so I can incorporate some golf rounds into the trip.

I like the tournaments a lot.

Also would be fun to one year resurrect the Aggie classic and host 3 other teams. Would be fun to see some programs come to Olsen field that we don't usually get to see, especially if they are fanbases who will travel

I'd love to see a 4 year rotation between Houston, Arlington, Aggie Classic, and the tournament in Pheonix

I've been back to only two baseball games since I graduated, and I've actually attended more games since they began to play in Frisco and Arlington the past 20 years. As I live in DFW, I love being able to see them every couple of years. I'll be out there tonight, and now that I have a family this is easier for us. Wife and I went to Florida state Michigan last week as she is a FSU grad. We really enjoyed that.

Good point! I was being selfish and then I hear Sdao say it was cool to be on a major league mound.

Most of the players on the rosters will most likely never touch a big league field outside of these tournaments. So it's pretty cool for them to get that experience. I think if I was a player I'd love that… Especially being from Houston and get to playing on the Home field of the team I grew up rooting for in the Astros

There are also plenty of Rangers fans on our team that are really excited to be playing there this weekend

They play at Arlington and Houston for the sake of the players. It's a shame we didn't have a better crowd last night, but perhaps we will tonight.

I loved going to Pepperdine in 2016, but there aren't too many potential road trips like that. I guess you could go play UCLA, but as much as they travel for Big Ten play, they probably would not be interested in coming to Texas. Same for the ACC schools.

Agree, yesterday I went early to watch part of UCLA/UT and tomorrow you will have a top-5 matchup with UCLA/MSU before our game if interested.

I despise these tournaments. Would much rather do a home-and-home and see some good non-conference baseball at Olsen.

This video perfectly illustrates why I am 100% in favor of these tournaments. For some of these young men, they will never experience this kind of walkout ever again. And putting myself in their shoes (having multiple children in Little League right now), I'm so happy for them that they did at least once.

I'd rather host one of the teams we played this weekend (or a snowbird team) than keep doing these tournaments as currently structured.

The price point is off - $30 ticket + $15 in fees to sit in a mostly empty stadium isn't a great fan experience.
  • I could live with $30. The fees are what feel excessive
  • If the goal is atmosphere and engagement:
    • Offer $10 GA tickets and fill the lower bowl (little league teams, families, casual fans).
    • Make money on concessions.
    • Keep premium seating at higher prices.
Full stadium = better experience for fans and players. Almost-empty at premium pricing just doesn't make sense.

Was in Vegas this past weekend with a ton of Aggies. It would have been awesome if the Ags would have been at the Vegas tournament to catch a game there instead of always playing in Arlington or Houston. I think playing big teams away from home, especially in a showcase not in our region of the US is great exposure for the program. Would be cool to see them play in other tournaments besides the same two we always play in.

I favor home & homes...however the RPI aspect can be tricky

Childress went heavy with the home & homes starting in 2012 with Fullerton, Pepperdine, Fresno, and Long Beach over a 6-year period; but I'm not sure those series ever really paid off -- because those programs had some down years during that time. Thus no big RPI boost.

I will say...it is possible to play in a round-robin tournament and play a home & home in the same season

or just skip the round-robin tournament one year -- don't have to play in one every year

I like this idea. Playing in Vegas, the spring training field tournaments in Arizona or the tournaments in Florida would be cool to mix in. I could justify spending a thousand dollars to take an actual trip. I don't want to spend $500-$600 to got to Houston or Dallas when I could wait a week and go to Blue Bell instead. I agree that it is for the players and for them to get the experience and play some high level competition before conference play.

I think the players enjoy playing in the MLB stadiums more than you think. I can still remember vividly playing in Superdome (New Orleans), Ballpark at Arlington and other stadiums more than I remember certain home and home's. But I like both and want both.

Just stating, that playing in the MLB stadiums are a big deal to players.

Would it be possible to get both? There's been a lot of talk over the years about getting Baylor and or Tech back on our schedule. What if we did a 3 game set with Tech played at the Ballpark in Arlington? I have no idea if that works logistically, but I would much rather play 3 game series than round robin tournaments.

Also, there are tournaments like this hosted at other MLB ballparks than just Houston and Dallas. Why not go to one of the others occasionally? Get the destination experience for the fans and then MLB experience for the players.

Oh, and weather is a problem, but could you imagine if they did this at Yankee Stadium, or Fenway, or Wrigley?

It's hard to justify the cost of traveling out of state just to go to a tournament at an MLB park when we have two such options in state, where we can travel by bus. I'm sure it would be fun for the players, the Aggies who happen to live near wherever we play, and a few of us diehards that like to travel for baseball, but we have to live in the real world where money matters.

I know for the students who went with me to Arlington this weekend, and I, it was already hard. We don't have a lot of money and want to travel to be loud and create an Olsen Field North, South, East, and West, but we're constrained both monetarily and by our class schedule. Getting back at 3 am was not easy, and to think how bad that could be if we were playing out of state, personally, for the students, we should keep playing tournaments in Texas. It was doable and not as constraining as it could've been if we played out of state.

We could start with bringing the TCU Tuesday game back if you want some quality non-conference at Olsen now that tu is in the SEC. Maybe add Baylor or DBU as well and alternate the home games.

I went to a couple of games in Phoenix opening weekend. I selfishly hope we consider this since I live here. Weather is probably better than most other places mid February and a side benefit is a lot of MLB and minor leaguers were already at the complexes so fans, and the college players, could see them on the side fields at the complexes.

I also think a lot of texagers would enjoy the golf opportunities.

I don't have a problem with the preseason tournaments, particularly because the ones in Dallas and Houston are some of the biggest and the closest to me.

I would also like to see a big home and home series on another weekend instead of a snowed in north cupcake coming to Olsen to take their beating.

Ole Miss and Miss St do something like this where they play home/away/neutral with Southern Miss. After hearing Earley and some of the players talk about the series this weekend I am behind playing these types of events. It was a big deal for a lot of the players

Im in Colorado so attendance is not a consideration. I'd rather see a variety of opponents which lends itself to tournaments over H2H. Of course, the old Houston tournaments used to host Houston and Rice every year which isnt very attractive (even if we only played 1). This year's set up in Arlington - 3 SEC teams, 3 "premier" teams was almost perfect.

Either option is better than what we have coming up this weekend with Oakland. Simply not interesting, shouldnt be competitive and will kill our RPI.

I like that they do that, and it's cool that it works for them, but who would we do this with? Texas and Baylor? Houston and Rice? Sam Houston/SFA/Texas State/UTSA/Lamar? Doesn't sound appealing to me.

If I was writing the schedule we would play Tech, TCU, Rice, Baylor, UH, Texas State, and DBU on a semi regular basis. Combined home and away and Tuesday nights and early weekends.

I know I know. RPI and whatever. I don't care about any of that. Winning teams don't care.
