I was reading this and can't believe it is a recent thread. Did we not watch our pitching staff pitch this weekend? They did an awesome job this weekend! Credit needs to be given to Earley and JK for shuffling the rotation.

Don't be complacent. Some of these posts are bizarre.

Some of these folks must be auditioning for Duvall's (RIP) role in the Great Santini.

Why would we want him?

And he's being heavily recruited back to the MLB

Because he's a really good pitching coach.

No, he's not.

Prager and Aschenbeck alone would make anyone look good. It's hard to have a better roster than the 2024 pitching staff.

I don't particularly like Kelly's pitching philosophy/selection and he may be lacking at recruiting, but given the production the bullpen has gotten relative to the talent on campus he's doing a pretty solid job this year.

My biggest issue is we don't even know what we have on the roster. The same 3 guys have been used over and over out of the pen and most of the staff doesn't even have any innings. Not sure if Bollinger was any good or not, but I see why he rolled out. Too many guys aren't getting any work.

Bollinger wasn't effective in the fall scrimmage I saw - he had issues throwing strikes consistently.

They also play every Wednesday and the scrimmages are extremely competitive because they are competing for playing time. He obviously wasn't effective enough to get on the field. He left the program and Brauny said looking to transfer down a level to mid Major. Not every portal add is a hit.

It looked like during the tu series we reduced the number of middle-middle meatballs when ahead in the count. That had been a recurring problem all season. Sdao did a better job of this, as well as Lyons. Whether JK fixed that problem or it was just happenstance, I don't know, but it took a while - and hopefully it stays fixed.

Our starting pitchers had a 8.20 ERA on the weekend.

The offense was the key to the weekend....Lyons out of the pen was fantastic but he was it on the bump

Not really a JK fan, however, Sims made remarkable strides between freshman and sophomore season. Some of that, if not all, needs to be attributed to JK, unless he had a personal offseason pitching coach. Braden Montgomery had his own hitting coach nearby, not sure if pitchers do the same thing.

Freshcorn also made noticeable improvements toward the end of his freshman year and has been lights out in relief this year.

Bollinger was the worst pitcher in the program in the fall. By a lot.

Me screaming at my TV says otherwise. I was frustrated it appeared we don't teach our pitchers to know their misses in plus pitcher counts. Both homeruns, in the 9th of Friday's game, were on 0-2 counts.

We need biometrics equipment in the new pitching lab. I am not familiar with what we do have, but our recruiting levels indicate that we are not fully equipped with the technology needed. Personally, I think we should purchase everything early and set it up in one of the hitting tunnels until the new facility opens in January and reinstall it at that point. I'm concerned we could see another subpar summer of recruiting pitchers because we still won't have the pitching lab equipment ready for use this fall.

From my understanding, a full pitching lab requires significant experience to operate to it's maximum potential. Does anyone know if we have that on hand currently or if our staff has any experience with such?

we all know what the biggest problem is

Talk about unintentional comedy. No, we don't know what the problem is, unless you are just saying the problem is that the pitching is not good enough. None of us here know why that's the case. I hope Earley knows, because its his job to figure it out, so let's hope he does.

Obviously, you never want to give up big contact on an 0-2 count, but up 3 runs in the 9th, the situation is a bit different in my view. Last thing you want there is a lead off walk. That's almost worse than giving up a solo shot.

Is there something between hanging an 0-2 slider and a leadoff walk? In that situation, your slider should be below the knees and 6" off the plate. If i miss, it's further out and in the dirt, not middle, thigh high. You don't want to give them anything to square up in that situation, that's just pitching 101. Plus, you're giving them momentum. If I recall, almost every homerun they hit was 0-2 or 1-2, that's not understanding how to be smartly aggressive. That's a taught and learned behavior..

Prager 2024: 2.95 ERA, 97.2 innings, 124 Ks, 1.055 WHIP, 7.9 H9, 1.8 BB9, 11.4 K9, 6.2 K/BB
Prager 2025: 4.21 ERA, 83.1 innings, 73 Ks, 1.260 WHIP, 9.1 H9, 2.3 BB9, 7.9 K9, 3.48 K/BB

So Prager, in fact, cannot make ANYONE look good.

As a team over all games played, we are 13th in the conference in ERA and dead last in opponent batting average. We throw a ton of strikes, so our walk numbers are good. But we also don't have any elite arms capable of putting guys away. Sims has been pretty good, and Sdao may be coming on. At least he showed some life against Texas. It may not even be entirely a Kelly thing... we just don't have the guys.

Thank God we can hit.
