He started playing baseball at 14U. Which is extremely late.
Just shows all the 6U - 13U is pretty meaningless as far as becoming a prospect. If you got talent you got talent.
Exactly. All these parents and clubs talking about playing in college in middle school......far....far....far....too early.
Genetics is something that you cannot hack. Kid is a natural born hitter who was blessed with wonderful genetics. Can't teach that...one bit.
Let puberty hit then and only then is when the true talent shines. Seen so many 12-14 year old "studs" who were nowhere close to being a stud at 16 when all the other kids are 75 lbs heavier and 6 inches taller....
There's even more nuance than that though.
If Wilson were at a big, 6A program in the Houston area he probably wouldn't ever have gotten the chance to play baseball and been steered towards football. Even with that athleticism he'd have been so raw as a HS freshman he might not have made the team and never had the chance to develop.
But, being able to play at a smaller HS and getting into a select program that saw his raw skills got him to develop and show off that talent.
As for the Jeremy Booth tweet in the OP, he's telling the truth. They saw Wilson playing for Banditos, had him work out, and Longley told Earley to offer him, and they also invited him into the Future Stars program which has become a pretty big deal. And for a humble-brag, my oldest is in that same program just a few years behind.
Here's what happened with Wilson and this is the workout Wilson references in his "Rally Cap" interview (Luis Amaro was his coach at Banditos):
They have 4 big events, one for each age - Fresh 50 for HS freshmen, Underclass Premier for HS soph, Underclass Elite for HS juniors, and the Main Event for seniors. Invite only and you don't pay to be a part of it- this past fall my oldest was part of the Underclass Premier which was at Dunkin' Park in Hartford, CT which is the home of the Rockies AA-affiliate, the Hartford Yard Goats. Last fall the Main Event was at Globe Life in Arlington. This coming fall my son is looking to return for the Underclass Elite which is going to be at Dudy-Noble in Starkville and the Main Event is at Target Field in Minneapolis.
