Sorry if I missed it, but who is Cain replacing on our current staff?

He's filling the position Caleb Longley held before he left in January. Troy Claunch filled the vacancy during this past season, but apparently that was only on an interim basis. As far as I know Claunch will still be a part of the staff going forward, but will go back to his previous position.

Thanks.

Technically, Longley, but the old NCAA staff limitations are gone, so he doesn't really have to fit into any slot. We could add as many as we like. It's why Hutch can now work with pitchers in the bullpen when, before the rule changes, he had to stick to his administrative role.

Didn't realize this. When did the rule change?

I have been around a long time. And this surprised me more than almost anything that has ever happened in Aggie athletics. Great deal all the way around,

Whether you dislike Cain due to drama or like him due to his ability. The big take away here is that we screwed Schloss

It was part of the House settlement, along with the scholarship changes and whatnot.

We caught all of them completely off guard and took their top assistant. Schloss didn't know, the team didn't know, nobody knew until everyone knew. Give Earley some credit here.

That's the best part - besides the winning on the field that will be happening in very short order. If the MLB stops drafting HS players then this decision is even magnified more.

New rules allow for more assistants (until recently you were limited to 3 full time assistants but that is no longer a limiting number). I'm guessing Claunch continues in the same role he has been in handling the catchers.

Thank you for the correction. I can't keep track of all the NCAA rules changes.

Either way I think keeping Claunch on staff to work with catchers and assist with hitting would be great to round out the coaching staff. I really do believe this is one of the best staffs in the country now.

I mean if UH isn't the right one, it's gonna take a pretty damn elite job. UH is in the Big 12 now and in a recruiting area that Cain is very familiar with.

Some of us remember what Cain did with Schloss when we were one win from a natty. Hard to just shrug that off

If you have more info than me, let me know. I tend to look at how the players react. The pitchers made it very clear Weiner was not well-liked. They advocated for Earley to get the job. They seem to be ecstatic Cain is coming back. That makes me believe there were two that handled it one way and two that handled it another.

nil changes everything. Is cougar high willing to dump some of their relatively meager nil football money (compared to a&m, tech and Texas) into baseball?

UH could be a great job and has all the potential to be one. They don't fund it well though, they're bottom tier in the Big 12 for baseball NIL. Without that improving it's a tough job.

Fair point, but I think it means the only big 12 jobs he might consider would be Tech, Arizona, Arizona State, TCU and Oklahoma State. I think him turning down UH likely means he'd turn down Baylor and schools like Tulane, ULL, etc. My guess is it will take an ACC or SEC power to lure him into head coaching, but a place like Tech could also be the type of place he'd go.

True. I would say baseball is likely not a priority for them, out of necessity. Not near same as a&m for sure

That's a pretty maroon colored glasses way to look at it, but I like the way you think.

Austin is expensive and the traffic situation is beyond horrible
CS is a better place to raise kids if your job is at the university in the center of town

UH doesn't invest in baseball, like at all. They are all
about basketball after football, sometimes even before football.

Outside of maybe 5 teams in the big 12, none of them have substantial NIL budgets. I think this likely means the only big 12 jobs he'd even consider are Tech and TCU. And I doubt West Virginia or Kansas have much of a baseball NIL budget but they seem to be doing ok.
Aston04

But if you are not gonna spend nil money on baseball, better to be at a program without a history of success and one that's not close to other programs throwing cash around.

That's why the freaking ku baseball job is arguably better than houston now.
Ball Five

I second this. They had some pretty good teams a while back but couldn't keep any consistency because they just don't invest in baseball. Basketball and football (in that order) are their #1 and #2 sports. Some local radio hosts believe they can be a sleeping giant in baseball due to all the local talent if the likes of Tilman and other big donors pour money into the program but that just hasn't happened.

I just recalled this same sort of thing happened with Yeskie. He committed to Schloss and A&M, then when Jay Johnson called to ask him to come to LSU, he said he had to honor his commitment to A&M. Two years later, he left to go to LSU with Jay.

Schloss made kind of a noncommittal statement about it at the time, too.

I have a friend that knows Nolan and said that Nolan was unhappy with his promised compensation at sip that never ended up materializing, which shocked me because texas has seemingly unlimited funds to prevent moves like this, especially the optics of losing him back to Earley. They are petty enough to write a check to a towel boy to avoid optics like this, let alone a coach of Cain's stature and pedigree.

take that's for what it's worth, but glad to have him back.

The "Texas sells itself" thinking is why they haven't played for a major sport national title in 15(?) years while A&M, TCU, tech, Baylor, and Houston have.
