Coronavirus Update 07/29/21 - Delta Variants
BTHO Covid-19

I obviously struck some nerves with my last post. Sorry if you don't like it but I stand by my statement the news is not in the news business anymore they are in the entertainment business now. They will do or say anything true or not to get you to stay tuned in. Turn it off, it will do wonders for your mental health.

More about the delta wave and vaccines

Are the cases rising absolutely they are but deaths are not. This means that the vaccines are working. Data from the UK shows that deaths have plummeted from 400 per day during the second wave at the same point to just 8 with the new delta wave. Want to feel good look at the graph of deaths in the UK with delta variant compared to the second wave in the article below.

https://www.newstatesman.com/.../how-uk-s-covid-19...

This corresponds to what we have seen here in the US and locally here in Texas. Deaths have remained low while cases continue to spike. So don't let them scare you to death. Vaccines are designed to prevent severe illness and deaths.

Why are so many vaccinated people testing positive?

Because that is how vaccines work. It does not create some imaginary force field around your body that prevents the virus from ever entering. The virus still enters your body but your immune system recognizes it and destroys it before you get deathly ill. Vaccinated people kill the virus off faster so rarely get sick or deathly ill. Most have only minor or no symptoms.

We only know they are positive because we are testing too much. For instance a vaccinated patient needed a hip replacement and they required a Covid test prior to surgery. He tested positive and called my office freaking out thinking he was going to die. I asked him "Do you feel sick at all?" He answered "No"! So I said then stop worrying about it! Get retested next week and when it's negative we will reschedule your surgery.

Also many families if someone tests positive they all get tested and some who are vaccinated turn positive but yet they feel fine. Their immune system will likely clear the virus very rapidly but they still have enough virus to turn the test positive because the test is extremely sensitive. It only takes any dead viral particles to turn a Covid test positive. You can be completely recovered but still test positive for a week.

Here is a repost of the supplements we have discussed to have potential benefits.

Quercetin from 250mg up to 1g twice per day Remember this is a Zinc ionophore.
Vitamin D3 Take this for sure if you are deficient and I now recommend taking it either daily or weekly as long as your values are not too high. Remember too much vitamin D can cause issues. However, if you are diagnosed with Covid-19 take 50,000IU immediately as this appears to have significant benefits.
Sleep greater than 8 hours per night
CoQ10 100-300mg per day: a potent antioxidant that potentially helps balance oxidative stress, increase vasodilation, prevent clot formation and decrease vasoconstriction.
Zinc any amount is probably good but take what you can tolerate without making you feel bad up to 40mg. You do not want to be Zinc deficient as it is how many drugs like HCQ work.
Melatonin 0.1mg to 10mg at night. Take what you can tolerate and what helps you sleep without making you feel drugged or tired in the morning. If you are diabetic watch your sugars.
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) - 600mg twice per day shown to decrease severity of influenza, improve lung functions in COPD, antioxidant properties, potentially helps prevent clotting and with mental disorders. Caution for asthmatics as there is potential for bronchospasm but this is rare.
Vitamin C 250mg to 500mg twice per day. Effects debatable in oral form but IV did help in China. But is proven to strengthen immune system
Green Tea either drink some or 1 pill per day alternate zinc ionophore if you don't have or don't take Quercetin
Famotidine 10-20mg twice per day potentially inhibits viral replication and helps with heartburn
Baby Aspirin 81mg aspirin to thin blood and help prevent clots but only after discussing with your physician to make sure you have no contraindications to its use.

As always the information and understanding of COVID-19 is changing rapidly. This information is for education purposes only and you should never make changes to your health without consulting your personal physician. Make a virtual appointment with your physician and discuss your health and the best possible treatment plan for you. It is also important to reiterate that there are no clinically evidence-based integrative prevention or treatment strategies for COVID-19 infection.

Let's all keep praying for all that are ill with this virus in the world.

Coronavirus Update 07/15/21 - Vaccine/Delta Variants
BTHO Covid-19

I haven't written in a while as there is not as much going on with Covid now as in the past. Numbers are down as many people have been vaccinated now. I have been trying to spend my evenings now doing things I enjoy rather than just working. But I have gotten a lot of private messages with these questions so I will address them for everyone.

First let me say I am very pro-vaccine. I encourage anyone with risk factors to get vaccinated as soon as possible. It is very rare to see anyone who is currently vaccinated get sick enough to be hospitalized or die. The vaccine is effective and safe. It is extremely rare to see any significant side effects from the vaccine. The most common things fever, chills and body aches are simply a sign that your immune system is working.

If I had Covid-19 do I need the vaccine?

No one knows for sure but probably not. People who have had Covid-19 likely still have at least a strong T-cell response even if antibodies are now gone.

Does the vaccine change my DNA?

Absolutely NO! This is a misnomer that is out there but is simply not true. First off the Moderna and Pfzier vaccines are mRNA vaccines. This means that it is simply a set of instructions. In this case to make spike proteins. Once you get the shot the mRNA is transferred into the cytoplasm of the cell where the ribosomes are located. These ribosomes then produce lots of spike proteins. Your immune system recognizes these spike proteins don't belong and destroys them. Creating memory cells on how to best destroy them in case they ever see them again.

Think of this like a big bad dude that shows up at a bar threatening to kick everyone's ass. Once he starts fighting someone figures out that he has a bad right knee and beats him up. Next time he comes to the same bar someone says "I know that punk, kick him in the right knee."

Now as for your DNA it is located in the nucleus of the cell and has a cell wall around it. Thus, the mRNA stays in the cytoplasm and never gets into the nucleus. Thus it is not possible to change the DNA.

I am writing this to help parents with one of the most common questions I get. Should I vaccinate my child against Covid-19?

The quick answer is no. This disease has not been shown to be deadly in people under age 25. In addition almost every death that did occur had significant underlying medical conditions. Thus, vaccinating healthy subjects in this age group makes no medical sense.

The vaccine has also shown to rarely cause viral myocarditis. And while rare it is still more likely than death from Covid-19. Luckily a majority of these return to normal over time. But certainly something that should be considered prior to vaccinating healthy children.

Also natural immunity is preferred for better long term efficacy. Remember, immunity is not just conferred by antibodies, it's also a function of memory B and T cells, which the study researchers suggested may confer long-lasting immunity as in SARS-COV1 which T-cell response has lasted over 15 years. Given the near-zero risk of COVID-19 death in healthy children and the recent discovery of rare myocarditis complications this should raise a discussion of whether the vaccine is an appropriate approach for healthy kids.

Knowing that natural immunity is preferred there is certainly no need to vaccinate healthy children who have already recovered from Covid-19. They likely have a superior immune response to one from the vaccine already.

Now for the most common question the Delta and Lambda variants.

Everyone seems to be getting freaked out by these. STOP WATCHING the news! Viruses mutate all the time. Influenza A mutates at 300 times the rate of other microbes. There will be tons of mutations, who cares. Some will be more contagious, others less. The more contagious of course will spread faster and cause more cases. This is normal. Until we see a mutation that is shown to cause a significant increase in hospitalizations or deaths in vaccinated or people with previous Covid-19 infections, who cares! It simply does not matter.

The news is overhyping them to get you to watch again. Remember a year ago everyone was locked into the news and they had record numbers. Now their ratings are plummeting and they need to scare you into watching again. So don't help them out and tune them out. You have nothing to worry about until we see actual medical studies showing these viruses to be deadly in the vaccinated or immune population.

Here is a repost of the supplements we have discussed to have potential benefits.

Physicians Who Post Covid-19 Vaccine Misinformation May Lose License, Medical Panel Say

"The Federation of State Medical Boards warned July 29 that physicians and other healthcare professionals could be at risk of losing their medical licenses if they spread Covid-19 vaccine misinformation on social media, online and in the media."

Appears Dr. Peter McCullough, Epidemiologist - an American cardiologist and professor of medicine is being targeted. He is currently Vice Chief of Internal Medicine at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas and Senior Professor of Internal Medicine at the Texas A&M University Health Sciences Center. He is editor-in-chief of the journals Reviews in Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardiorenal Medicine. During the COVID-19 pandemic, McCullough advocated for early treatment, criticized the response of government public health agencies, and dissented from their recommendations.

Yep. I deleted social media off my phone and stopped watching the news for this very reason. My blood pressure has never been better.

My wife was telling me yesterday how Facebook and other social media services were deleting legitimate scientific studies from respected countries because it doesn't support the CDC recommendations.

I don't care what political party you associate with, the way our media and "news" is manipulated and controlled is scary.

Rev,

Is there any information out there to suggest any type of correlation between the vaccines and pregnancy/fertility issues? Also, I saw an overload of posts on social media and online about the vaccines causing intense and irregular periods. What is the reason by that and is there any long term issues that could come up from this?

Main symptom is a stuffed up head and clogged ears.

I think every opinion is important. Whether I agree or disagree should not matter. It should be left up so we can read and debate it. That is how we all learn by listening to other theories. Some will be proven right other wrong. But no one should be punished for their opinion.

Only exception is if someone is purposefully trying to harm someone with information they know is blatantly wrong.

Just in case

Coronavirus Update 08/03/21 - Vaccine Again
BTHO Covid-19

I hope this one doesn't get taken down, we will see.

Cases are definitely rising rapidly with the delta variant to around 72,000 per day now from around 12,000 per day in early June nationwide. Deaths however have remained low with a 7 day average of 300 nationwide and have remained under 400 per day since the beginning of June. Hospitalizations nationwide are up to around 48,000 from 20,000 in early June.

Locally in Texas in early June we were averaging around 1,000 cases per day and now approaching 7,000 cases per day. Hospitalizations were at around 2,000 per day and now right at 6,000 per day. Deaths here were averaging 30 per day and are still at 30 per day.

It should be noted that most of the cases were people who were not vaccinated. Also it is important to understand that your risk of hospitalization being vaccinated is extremely low. According to the CDC's most recent own data 163 million people have been vaccinated. Of this 6,239 were hospitalized and 1,598 were not even related to Covid so that leaves us with 4,641 people nationwide who were fully vaccinated. That means you have a 0.0028% chance of being hospitalized if you are vaccinated. So about 3 out of a hundred thousand people. This is almost the same risk of dying in an airplane when you fly or dying playing football.

Now what about dying if you are vaccinated? Let's break those numbers down too. There are a total of 1,263 fatal cases reported of vaccinated people of which 309 were found to have not been related to Covid at all. So that leaves us with 954 per the CDC's report as of July 26th. That math comes out to 0.00058 or less than 6 out of a million people.

To put that in perspective the odds of getting dealt a Royal Flush is one 649,740 so if you were dealt 4 hands of 5 card stud you would have a better chance of getting a Royal Flush than dying of Covid if you are vaccinated. Or simply put, riding a bicycle has a death rate of 7.1 per million.

As I have stated previously I am very pro vaccine! For adults, clearly the benefits outweigh the risks. I have been over the fact that the Covid vaccines are very safe many times. If the posts are still up just go back and read them if you are concerned about the safety of the vaccines.

Now for children you have to make your own decisions as the data is not nearly as clear. Only 340 deaths total have occurred under the age 17 and 2,493 under age 29. The CDC's site estimates that 20% of all Covid-19 cases are under 30. So with 35,895,980 total cases that gives us 7,179,196 cases in that age group. So the fatality risk is 0.04% under age 30. This is close to the risk of dying in a car wreck. So it is very small to begin with and if you have no risk factors it will almost certainly be much lower.

So the question is in kids where the benefits do not clearly outweigh the risks of the vaccine. Remember the first rule of medicine: Do no harm! We now have over 1,000 reported cases of myocarditis in kids with the vaccine and only 340 deaths due to Covid. And while myocarditis is extremely rare we need to consider that kids are not likely to get deathly ill with Covid-19.

In addition there are other concerns like infertility, while there is no evidence at all at this time it was proposed a protein called syncytin-1 which is an important component of the placenta in mammals could be accidentally attacked since it shares some similar genetic instructions with part of the spike protein of the coronavirus. This seems extremely unlikely and far fetched but so is death in this group. Also if the vaccine attacks this protein why wouldn't natural immunity do it also. Finally, there could be other rare complications such as Guillain Barre Syndrome, Bell's Palsy and allergic reactions. Now if your child has risk factors this decision becomes much easier and get him or her vaccinated.

I get this question all the time. What about the kids who are around the grandparents all the time? Simple answer: vaccinate the grandparents. Problem solved and no risk to the child. I still believe natural immunity is always superior to vaccination when possible. This unfortunately is not possible for adults as Covid is too risky. The benefits do not outweigh the risks.

Now if the school makes you get tested if not vaccinated you have to decide as a parent is that worth getting the vaccine. If you have other benefits to getting the vaccine then weigh those too like a team or extracurricular group requires it.

So I have no problem vaccinating children but I think each parent or young adult needs to think about potential complications prior to just vaccinating for a disease that is rarely harmful to them.

Now for the biggest question I get, what about Texas and OU joining the SEC!

I say welcome to the SEC! In the words of Jimbo Fisher "It ain't going to be like it used to be!" I hear Texas saying A&M won't be able to recruit now because Texas is in the SEC too. They still us as the little brother that they picked on growing up. However, big brother went off to college gained 30lbs of fat while little brother was still growing and working out every day. Big brother came home to find out little brother is taller, stronger and faster now. So be careful what you wish for.

OU is more prepared but we have seen those results also in the playoffs. Both teams will have to start getting bigger on the line of scrimmage because the SEC is a line of scrimmage league. You can only go so far with high powered offenses if you can't block or your defense is porous.

Every game is tough in the SEC. You don't bring your A game and anyone can beat you. It is grind with no weeks off. Texas is excited about playing Arkansas out of conference this year and that is about to be the easiest game on the schedule.

They will both improve over time and with the new NIL Texas will be back because of the amount of money they have. But A&M is already there and will be hard to knock off the mountain. While we are racking up W's they will be getting the L's. I can't wait till the first matchup, bring it on!

Here is a repost of the supplements we have discussed to have potential benefits.

Quercetin from 250mg up to 1g twice per day Remember this is a Zinc ionophore.

While I personally prefer natural immunity. As there is other things such as T-cell response that are difficult to measure. But we do have data showing higher antibody levels with the vaccine. We don't have a direct comparison available yet with hospitalizations and deaths. So based on antibody titers alone it's possible that natural immunity is not as good.
