To what extent do you plan to isolate yourself/your family?

Curious what everyone's intentions are. We just came home from Colorado and yesterday I was thinking that we'd go about business as usual after we got home, but now it feels like that's probably not the most responsible course of action. We traveled through two major airports and visited two large ski resorts, so I'm slightly concerned we could be carriers. Kiddo is out of school until March 30. I'm canceling pretty much everything we had scheduled this week, but completely isolating ourselves at home still feels really extreme. The real questions in my mind are, should I allow family to visit (grandparents, aunts, and uncles who live locally) or ban everyone from the house for their own good? And selfishly I still want to go to the gym...

So, what are your plans? Strict social distancing? Or a combination of avoiding crowded public places but allowing limited socializing and going about your personal business?

Our isolation will be no more than not fishing close to other boats.

I don't think most people can isolate, at least not at this point. My son flew to his dad's last weekend, so I have to go to the airport tomorrow to pick him up. Didn't have enough food to feed him once he gets back, so I had to go to the store.

School is cancelled, and scouts and faith formation are at our church, which has cancelled everything but mass. So he can stay home.

Our family is small, and we don't see them all that often, so that's not an issue.

But, I still have to go to work. We have not been told we can work from home. And the only return to work restrictions are on employees who traveled internationally or on a cruise (at least for now).

Your question about going to the gym is a good one. I am cleared to go back to exercising next week after a 3 month break due to surgery. I think I am going to stick to group classes that don't have many people in them and where I can distance myself from others.

I still will need to go to the grocery and the gas station and probably other errands that I can't think of right now.

I'm a student, and with school being closed/online for the rest of the semester, I don't really have a need to go out except for food and essentials, which I bought last week when the Washington State and California stuff started happening.

And while my age group isn't the most vulnerable, both of my parents are cancer patients and I'd hate to be the one to spread it to people in the same situation as my parents.

We're bunkering down at home. My kids private gymnastics school is going to be open for open gym play for the previously enrolled and they'll reevaluate classes after Spring Break. We'll be there a lot. Most of our close friends are pregnant so play dates are out at their request. We haven't been exposed but I have no desire to rub shoulders with the masses. We have a solid two weeks of groceries, maybe three. Anything past that we'll have to evaluate. Husband is working Monday to shut down the office, but after that home for two weeks.

We plan on doing our part. We will stay home as much as we can. Wife is about to go to work to get a few things and I will go to H-E-B when needed but that's about it.

I plan on camping in the backyard with my son, working out in the garage, read some books, watch some family movies and probably build some big forts in the house.

We will stay busy and have fun!

My grandparents (in rural Fannin County) have basically asked that we (kids, grandkids, etc) do not visit. They're in the high risk categories and we're frankly fairly worried about them because their house is usually such a social spot - someone typically visiting there every weekend.

We're looking into cameras for TVs and how to help them Facetime more. The duration of this is going to be a challenge -- I'm hearing/reading about this being months-long and maybe won't have a vaccine until the end of the year or longer.

We are in San Jose, Ca which is a hot spot. Hubby and I are almost 60 with asthma and hypothyroid, and hubby has hypertension. Our 23 year old daughter is living with us, and so is our 25 year old son.

Son is moving out Sunday. He doesn't want to stop working or going out.

Daughter is doing online grad school. She's got a brain injury and asthma so she's also high risk.

We stopped going to activities like church after the first case was announced. Last week, I stopped Bible study and going to the gym and only did take out.

This week only going grocery shopping at quiet times. We did go to Trader Joe's on Tuesday after noon, and decided it was too crowded and won't be going there in the future.

We are fixing up our house and scheduled to have painting and other stuff done to it starting Monday. I've told hubby I want to postpone the inside work.

We have lots of food, so we don't have to go out much. We will probably get supplies for fixing up the house, and that's it.

We will be enjoying things like going on hikes or going to the beach. It's ok to be outside. We also have a nice backyard with a fire pit and a pool.

Isolating as much as possible. My wife is pregnant and my son is just getting over a case of pneumonia, so they are totally isolating for the time being. I'm going to work and doing grocery pickup for things we need.

Yeah, I told my wife the other day that we probably had just gone out (i.e. sitting down in a restaurant) for the last time in a while.

We've got some walking trails near us so we will probably all go take a long walk every day for exercise and just do normal "Christmas break" stuff at home (games, puzzles, movies, etc.) for a while.

Most people CAN isolate.

Most people just don't want to and think as long as they feel fine they aren't doing any harm.

It really is amazing -- we've got more entertainment within arm's reach that we could go through in a decade, but you ask people to lay low for 2 weeks simply so that it *might help not cause the pandemic to cripple our entire health care system* and people can't go 24 hours without making a point to go out in public.

It's like this country has gone so long without having any real nationwide crisis that everyone just assumes we're invincible and they don't need to pitch in.

Not only that, people were on Facebook last night patting themselves and others for being out at restaurants and bars near my neighborhood. I thought we were supposed to social distance?

Retired and living at the beach in FL, so pretty much have been living a self-quarantined lifestyle for a few years. We will go on as usual.

Wife was going to fly to NYC next week to visit one of our kiddos but she's going to cancel since most everything they were planning on doing has been shut down (Broadway show, Rangers hockey game). That, plus her mother is 80 and has autoimmune deficiencies so she didn't want to risk bringing something back and potentially infecting her mom.

We were out of town last week, returned Monday night. Tuesday morning we talked to the lady who manages the front desk at our condo -- most units are on a rental program and the beach is very popular. They had zero cancellations for spring break at that time. Talked to her again on Friday and they were over 50% cancelled for the next 2 weeks and the phone was ringing off the hook. Things changed very fast over the last 3 days.

Yes they did. Even in my sleepy little rural community, there have been virtual raids of all of the local Dollar Generals with a lot of out-of-towners from Houston and even Dallas descending and trying to hoard everything.

The Hubs talked to one store owner today who reported things have gotten testy when she refused to sell them every last bottle of bleach and hand sanitizer and roll of TP she had in stock. Further she said it started in the afternoon on Tuesday went full bore wild on Wednesday, Thursday and yesterday.

She also said she had heard through corporate that there had been some violence at other stores in the region.

People are losing their freakin' minds out there.

NO. We have to flatten the curve so we don't overload the healthcare system. Many people are going to get this. We just need to spread it out so those who need it can get treatment. How bad would it suck if hospitals had to start deciding who to help and who not to help.

Oh and there isn't medication for this. You can only treat the symptoms.

Look at how it crushed Italy's healthcare system. They have more beds per person than we do.

Do you want doctors to decide who lives and who doesn't? Cause if we don't flatten the curve that's what will happen

Do you really think the whole world and now even Donald Trump are overreacting?

And an NBA player is in fantastic shape and young. Most people are outside of that portion of the Venn diagram

I'm planning to avoid other people who don't live in our household as much as we can. I'll have to go to grocery store eventually. My husband has to go to work and kids will go back to school when it opens back up.

My mom wanted to bring my nephew over this morning. She's immunocompromised due to a recent bout with cancer and her age. NO, MOM. STAY AT HOME.

My neighbor wanted to know if our kids could play. They just flew back from ot of state. NO THANKS.

My bagpipe band wanted to know if I was available for a gig at a pub tonight. ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?

WHAT PART OF SOCIAL DISTANCING ARE PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTANDING????
jefe95

Yes. I do think we are overthinking this. At least overreacting.

The American innovation will kick in if that many people get that sick. There are urgent care centers all over the place. I doubt those count as beds. Capitalism will solve this faster than top down mandates will

a lot of people want to believe you and hope what you are stating is true, however, when you look at the "explosive" hospitalization numbers in Italy and Wuhan, they speak differently. this virus can explode fast and cause serious issues in the hospitals... as some parts of the EU are experiencing. France and Germany are expected to explode this week..

I think its easy enough for people to just chill and stay quiet a few weeks, enjoy some down time and see where this goes. IF the curve flattens out and the fear subsides the economy will jump back in gear. I would love to go have some margaritas tonight, but Ill refrain for a few weeks.. once this dies down, I ll make up for lost time

Well, I honestly hope you are right. But my wife is the Director of Analytics for the Seton/ Ascension health system and they are absolutely concerned about being overwhelmed in regards to beds, professional support and supplies.

To be frank, if the spread isn't controlled and there is a sense the health care system is getting overwhelmed, the Federal and State governments will enforce new restrictions that will force social distancing, just like China did and much of Europe is. They will take actions such as closing down bars, restaurants, cinemas, malls, public places, place curfews, restrict travel in and out of areas where there are major outbreaks, etc. They will use the National Guard as necessary to supplement law enforcement making sure people are complying.

Let's hope it doesn't get to that point. Americans are used to having a lot of civil liberties.

Are you a physician or involved in health care or infectious disease planning? We should really be listening to our health care and infectious disease professionals here and not arm chair qb this deal. It's not as simple as saying get sick, take some Sudafed, get better and live.

So you're banking on "we'll figure it out"?

And they won't be able to treat this at urgent care
