Not sure how many people are wanting to go back to business as usual right now, but 7 more weeks seems unreasonable. What about 2 or 3 more weeks first, and masks/gloves if you're in a public place. There have to be other measures to take vs close everything for 9 weeks.

I'll defer to the experts. When the medical community thinks we can address the issues and have plans to attack this thing, then I'll be on board

I pulled this theory out of my ass.

Dallas looked at NYC and saw all the doctors getting sick and need to do this so the doctors don't walk off the job.

Quarantine is NOT leaving your home or apartment at all. People with active cases are under quarantine. The stay home order is not quarantine because it allows many outings, including grocery shopping ...
THANK YOU! I know it's weird to get worked up about semantics at a time like this, but stay-at-home =/ quarantine.
I mean who cares? Most people think of the current situation as a quarantine
Then "most people" aren't very smart.

This is economic armegedon.

Edit: I am a CPA and I am betting half my clients won't make it. Examples: One is a known restaurant/eatery in town, another owns eyecare centers; all shut down. I can go on and on. They are in full on panic mode right now. This extension is going to send some good hard-working folks over the edge. Going to have to flatten the curve at the mental health facilities pretty soon.
Question, would they rather be broke, dead or have lost a loved one?

I am a comfortable middle class person in my mid 50's. Yes, I expected to be saving for retirement now, not living on savings but I am gladly doing so in hopes of not contracting the virus myself nor spread it increasing chances of my loved ones catching it. One of those loved ones lives in Dallas and I am glad for the extension order.

No need of money if you are dead.

Not to mention, if this thing miraculously cleans up (or we find a highly available way to knock it out when people get it), then folks will revisit and roll these measures back.

The length is purely to get people to take it seriously and, based on the reaction of this board, it seems more prudent to go ahead and cast it out further like this than come back every few weeks and keep pushing it out and have the same meltdowns over and over and over and over.

You know the current predictions are that it won't peak in Texas until the first week in May right? You think everyone should go back to normal at the peak? I think it should be the end of May personally.
Some of you people really just don't get it. Unemployment could soar to 20% in April... If they really want to salvage every day life in America then they are going to need to have a massive forgiveness program for missed mortgage payments, utilities, and even previous debts like credit cards and school loans. This is going to bury our population. I personally know several people who have already been laid off and many who are on the chopping block. But ya let's keep talking about a shutdown until the end of May. Idiots.

Lol. I knew I'd get a response like this. I apologize for putting your health as the highest priority. I know people too. My wife is one of them.
Not to sound heartless, but this can only go on so long no matter what. At some point, you do have to put the well being and perseverance of 366 million American's over the lives of saving a couple hundred extra thousand. We eventually have to have the numbers on it to say when it is and isn't worth it.
And until we have adequate supplies, if people are unwilling to do their share, why should health care workers put their lives on the line without the tools needed to keep themselves safe?

Quarantine is NOT leaving your home or apartment at all. People with active cases are under quarantine. The stay home order is not quarantine because it allows many outings, including grocery shopping and some people go EVERY day. Stupid. No way you have essential needs every day. Buying a pineapple or an avocado is not essential.
We hit the store probably 2-3 times a week. But we eat very healthy. Mostly real, whole foods. So meat, fruit and veggies and the like. It's hard to bulk buy that type of thing outside of rice, potatoes etc. Plus we are trying not to hoard things. That's just the truth of the matter. We have 2 kids and there just are things we need or that we can't get on one visit and have to go back later that week. We try to go when it's not a peak time and are careful but there are times we have to go out. I've heard it suggested that people buy enough for 3 weeks, but the reality is that is not always realistic.

Honestly, going for walks, going outside, visiting the grocery store and the like do not bother me as long as one still stays 6 feet from others and stays away from large gatherings, etc.

Do you really think you are smart for enforcing the Chinese definition of quarantine?

It is clearly just an opinion.
What is your opinion on what this country looks like if we face an entire economic collapse?

Well, that would suck for me, because being in patrol for local city PD, I'd get to enjoy that **** show on the front lines.

But I'm of the opinion that it would very well end up worse if we just go to life as usual right now. You'd still have the economic collapse but mix in a good dose of panic from seeing very high death #s. You want every hospital looking like NYC and New Orleans? Open everything up. Then everything would be barren and closed anyway with people refusing to leave home.

Look, I get it, it sucks. My dad as a business in a mall that is obviously closed right now. Amazingly enough, he still is able to see the wisdom of that move, even though it hurts him.
Long road ahead...we will see where small business owners are at in May and June. I hope the best for your pops place.

For what it's worth, 90 new cases and no deaths for Dallas county just reported.

It is not an either-or issue. Rather what kind epidemic statistics, personal constraints and health measures need to be in place in order to get things at least somewhat moving again in a relatively safe manner. Not just a revolving door of extensions on the shelter in place. I do realize this is a dynamic situation. Just some idea of what the finish line looks like would immensely help some folks to plan their futures (and that of their employees).

Thanks. We're all riding this out as best we can. Emotions are pretty high on all sides.

Dad is 77 so at this point he's rightly more concerned about this virus than $$$.

I'm not enforcing anything. What we have is not a "quarantine". These are stay at home orders with many exceptions, hence not a quarantine. I'm simply referring to the actual definition of the word. You might just need to relax.

Looks like disaster declaration was extended to May 20. Stay at home order extended to April 30. Jenkins has clarified.

These discussions seem very political in nature. Feels like I'm reading a liberals vs conservatives debate.
