Main info is in the subject- employer has allowed working from home for the last couple of weeks due to everything going on, but announced today that next week that will end.

Very blessed to have a job still amidst the COVID-19 outbreak, and recognize that.

But if working from home hasn't changed productivity and customer service hasn't suffered- why not remain on the safe side? Very frustrating.

Will they be doing temp tests on every employee daily before entering and require masks in the office space? That is the only way I can see this working. Either that or have everyone tested at biweekly intervals.

I would guess that if they are ending it there's a definite economic incentive to do so. I, like you, am very thankful to have a job right now.

We haven't stopped working, but managers and people who can do mostly computer work are encouraged to do so from home. We get our temperature taken every day at specified times on the way into the facility. No more in person meetings etc. Working in materials research means we gotta make stuff, and you can't do that one from home!

Best of luck!

Maybe you should ask your employer? I'm sure that they disagree regarding the productivity and ability to function at the same level as you would in the office. If you have a convincing argument that can prove you can do your job just as well remotely, maybe they can change your position permanently.

What about State/County wide shut downs? Is yours over next week? I am sorry that's happening. Seems careless and perhaps even leaves employer open to a law suit.

Damn I wish my company would let me come back to the office tomorrow. Tired of living in fear.

We have remained open. Temp tests to enter office for all. Employees and docs all masked. We are encouraging pts to wear masks and offer washed / re-usable cloth masks to pts who don't have them (majority already have masks).

Amen. There's a large part of me that wishes I just could test positive and move on joining the huge majority of people that survive this thing. Hell, according to a lot of studies, I might have already had it and didn't know it.

Liability issues? The church in Florida lost it's insurance coverage as a result of continuing to defy the state's stay at home order.

Imagine what the previous generations would say about this thread. My grandparents generation would do almost anything for a job during the great depression, other generations did whatever it took during WWII and people waited in line for hours to get enough gas or converted their vehicle to propane like my dad did to go to work during the 70's, and now we have people complaining that they might not be able to do their job from the couch in their pajamas or stretchy pants. SMH.

Risk and Safety here..we do temp and an attestation on symptoms for each LEO, and Fire/EMS personnel prior to coming on shift and of course their PPE.

EMS and PD have transported about 30 suspected or confirmed cases with luckily only 3 being sent for quarantine. No positive employees yet.

Or, past generations who could not find a job would tell those who have a job to stop complaining they can't go drink with friends at a bar.

If productivity hasn't dropped, the only thing that shows is a lack of trust or a fear of loss of control from your boss.

Miss the part where I said I'm VERY blessed and thankful to even have a job? Not complaining about having to put on slacks and a polo, could care less about that. Much more concerned with my own health and safety as well as colleagues, along with other people we may come into contact with.

I understand plenty of people throughout history have been to war, fought for our freedom, and I am eternally grateful to them for doing so. I also understand there are millions without jobs right now and my heart breaks for those families.

However...that has nothing to do with my post.

If you know who provides the liability insurance to your company just forward the order to them and see what the response is

Sensitive much? I made my post in reference to people suggesting that employers should be taken to court for requiring employees to actually show up at the office.

I was just thinking about this earlier today. I wonder if we'll start to see lawsuits from people that are being asked to come back to work but don't "feel safe", are subsequently threatened with termination, and then sue for being forced to work in "unsafe" conditions. You could start to see certain safety accomodations being required of the employer (enforcing mask wear, enforcing distancing, etc.).

Yeah, that part is very much NOT clear in your post. Not even a little bit. Like, zero connection.

Just pointing that out.

ETA: Legitimately thought this was F16. I am not here to stir random pots on this board. Carry on!

If you are smart you won't say a word. Get back to the office if you like your job.

Definitely don't take advice from the regulars on this board. They'll suggest living in the closet for the next 3 years.

Lotta bosses really struggle to measure their worth apart from the number of boxes underneath them on the org chart. Maybe if they can't actually see the people in the boxes, it triggers an existential crisis.

Liability isn't much of an issue for most employers.

If the employer has workers compensation coverage, then a sick worker cannot sue the employer for negligence.

The employee could make a workers comp claim, but it would be difficult to prove that the disease was caused by a workplace exposure, as opposed to something unrelated to work.

Liability insurance policies typically have exclusions and don't cover claims made by employees.

There are moral and ethical reasons to keep working remotely as long as necessary, but liability for sick employees isn't much of a realistic issue for most companies.

I am very grateful for the things they HAD to do, which are responsible for many of the CHOICES we get to make.

Oh, and Viet Nam was, maybe, just maybe, a little worse than a line for gas.

You are free to leave your job if you feel your employer is being unreasonable. If you are the boss you can make the rules. If you're not the boss then tough luck.

You could become your own boss, but most people are too afraid to take that risk so they have no right to complain.

I'm curious about the situation for people who are at high risk for the illness in a "return to work" situation.

What is the employer's obligation to make the workplace safe for the employee? If that's not possible, and it's not a job that can be done from home either, can the employee claim a de facto termination and get unemployment?

At my company, if you aren't essential and don't have the capability to work from home, that is really your only option. They aren't paying people to stay home and do nothing.

Do you think this has been going on at all essential places if business that never shut down?

My workplace slowly reduced the amount of people that have to come in. After the first round they started taking temps at the door and encouraging masks, cut down meetings as much as possible, encouraged IMs instead of face to face. Once the shelter in place order came in and IT had things ready For wfh they reduced the amount of people on campus to mostly managers and those that could not do their job remotely. Shortly after that they required masks. The first employee case came up mid March. There have now been four or five more including one of the temperature takers. I am glad to be wfh as long as they allow it since I know it keeps me and my family safe even though I have to get up and log on at 6am to start my day and we are supposed to have a hard stop to allow others to log on no matter where we are in our work. My biggest issue is that I feel like my manager does not trust anyone to be productive and requires us to send out our plan for the day first thing and then our results at the end.
