Nothing doom and gloom about her comments? Pretty straight forward stuff we already know. Virus isn't going anywhere, new normal, etc.

Was she more doomy and gloomy in the video? Based on the article she didn't say anything that was all that different than what is being said many places -- need to see 10-14 days of hospitalization decreases before we open back up.

What did she say that was untrue? Everything she said has been repeated by expert after expert.

Only thing I would disagree with is the 10-14 day wait and using deaths as the indicator, which is a lagging statistic. Hospitalizations or admissions would probably be more appropriate.

The notion that it will be a "very long time before we return to normal". There's a lot of nuance to that statement and subject to one's version of normal. We can't wait for a vaccine or testing before we gather in large groups again. We can't wait for that stuff before returning to business travel and going out to eat. Like she said, that is 12-18 months away. My opinion is there will be anarchy and war before that kind of time frame is reached.

After reading through it a second time it wasn't quite as bad as the first pass. I do get the sense that if you asked her about Midnight Yell, Aggie Football, etc...she would say 2021 at the very earliest.

This virus has made one thing very clear, most people don't read past the headline.

Many people still haven't grasped the reality of the economic situation and what will be required, and that is to return to as normal as possible with some alternative restrictions.

Like the poster above said it will be anarchy before that happens. Humans, especially Americans citizens, are not going to stay isolated for that long. At a minimum people are going to start having house parties and meetups. Theres no way social distancing lasts another full month.

I agree people are selfish and idiots. We will try to open to early, people will die by the thousands this summer and it will scare The **** out of everyone. The fall/winter lockdown will make this week like child's play.

Without testing, tracking, isolation or an effective treatment or vaccine 100,000s if not millions of people will die before this is over.

I recommend you read some alternative views, millions will not die, the current stats do not support this.

With out a vaccine or aggressive testing, tracking and isolation, this ends with herd immunity. That happens at 60-70% infected. At a 1% death rate, that means millions dead.
Aggie95
How long do you want to ignore this user?

That was possible a few weeks ago. I think doctors have learned a lot in that time frame. We have remedies and procedures in place now that will save many lives going forward even without vaccine, etc.

There are no proven remedies

It depends on which 60-70% get infected.

If you can skew the demographics younger, the fatality rate is miniscule.

Out of the first 9,681 deaths tracked by the CDC, only 318 were under age 45.

Only 101 were under age 35.

You do realize no college football this fall is a very real possibility? The NCAA said today no football until students physically go back to classes, and most universities are making plans to not have classes this fall. So..........

Nowhere in that article did she say it would be 12-18 months before we could have house parties or get togethers.

People are looking for things to get mad about.

Why would they be "selfish and idiots"? Because they hate being under house arrest, being told they aren't essential and want to not be unemployed?

People trying to pay rent and feed their families are selfish idiots? That's a sad take of the human condition.

And even the experts are no longer suggesting millions will die in the US so please stop stating such opinions as facts.

Duncan, you know I like you, and I'm the last guy to call someone out for "fear mongering," but that's exactly what your post have felt like the past few days. It would be one thing if your numbers were accurate, but not even the biggest doomsdayers are saying what you're saying anymore. Sh*t's no doubt bad, we need to get certain protocols in gear, and there are a lot of people here in for a rude awakening in terms of the adjustments we're going to have to make until a vaccine is available. But you've been almost aggressively negative lately, which does no one any good.

A 12-18 month shutdown/ lockdown or version there of would have too great of an impact on the social and financial sectors.

It is not a viable solution.

It's unbelievable how many people think we can just keep going like this without total economic failure and becoming a third world socialist country. If this country doesn't open up soon, we will reach the point of no return.

These kind of highly slanted opinions are just as stupid as people claiming millions will die. You also have nothing to back that statement up.

but he does

350 MM people

0.7% IFR (conservative based on current findings, although serology testing is the key we don't have)

assume 40% to herd immunity (which is likely the low end)

that's right at a million dead

now that's a million dead estimated to get to herd immunity, but how long would that take in a society with mandatory mask requirements, moderate social distancing measures (no large gatherings), no schools? under those circumstances, it would likely take far longer than it will take to develop a therapeutic that takes the hospitalization rate and eventual IFR to something less terrifying to the vulnerable population (which is not just people in old folks homes).

also, as Keegan pointed out, the brute force approach could even resemble sheltering the olds for the rest of the year to avoid a mass death (although the hospitalization rate in that circumstance might still be staggering if you get too aggressive stripping away the social distancing for the non-vulnerable population).

I'm pretty optimistic that we'll get a legit treatment/prophylactic in the next 4-6 months. it's still going to be a killer bug, but the paranoia will start to break.

And this how we get a second wave more deadly than the first. This exact thing happened with the Spanish flu. Lockdown, restless, open up normally, 2nd wave worst than the first.

But then again, history books are chock full of humans not learning from themselves.
