Now, you open back up and you find a 25% reduction in business. You now have 2 locations operating at a loss and you top location doing ok but can't cover the loses the other 2 locations are making. You can close those locations but you have lease obligations. If the lease obligations can be covered by your only operating location maybe you can get by. If not, then you are going under. Now, you might come out of bankruptcies with that one location but that's it. You have let go 2/3rds of your employees.

One thing not accounted for in all of this is that all of this precautionary environment is temporary. Yes, very unfortunately there will be some businesses that fail. But the salon business model will go back to normal when all of this passes. Either with a vaccine/other medical ways to treat patients with covid, a herd immunity overall or with people just not giving a blank b/c they are tired of having to be so OCD all the time. But one way or the other all of this will eventually pass and you will be in restaurants within a foot or so of others and waiting for a haircut next to strangers and you won't even think about it anymore.
This. Solid post. I also know of a few salons locally that have taken this opportunity to do a little re-modeling to allow for more space between stations. The place I go to was staggering appointments to minimize folks in the waiting area and also to not overcrowd the salon. I expect that these changes will be temporary and eventually once all restrictions are lifted by the Governor they will be virtually non-existent.

Pretty sure nobody thinks it's permanent

Temporary is going to be 12-36 months depending on when we get an effective vaccine or treatment.

OP seems to be acting like he thinks so. At least the way I read his posts. Some on here do seem to be acting like social distancing, masks, no large crowds etc, will go on as the way we live moving forward.

What is interesting, and this is a total sidenote, is there will be some who do have a phobia when the disease is contained. I do see a small portion of the population masking and distancing or avoiding going out until they finally either get professional help with it or fight it themselves. Heck, we already saw it well before Covid when you'd see very healthy people wearing masks in public. I always gave them the benefit of the doubt as I am on an immunosurpressant myself (never wore a mask) so I get that they might have had a temporary or long term compromised immune system. But we know that there were others that were just very precautionary/OCD as well.

Innovation will be the result of this external pressure. You're correct. The "normal" business model of customers waiting for a haircut and then sitting in a chair for 15 minutes isn't going to fly. I suspect you see more in-home services for things like this in the future. I'm not sure how the price will compare between a $15 haircut at Supercuts and Supercuts at home. Obviously, it'll be more for the convenience factor. The market will determine that.

I'm envisioning Flo-bees attached to drones, all operated by Amazon, of course.

well, one can live in fear and be a little b for the government to suck off their teat, or you can take calculated risks and understand trade-offs and live ones life again.

Just got my hair cut in OKC by my regular stylist. Only difference I noticed is they no longer allow walk-in's. Price same as it was before the sky began falling.

Neither.

Edit to include that she did ask me if I would like for her to wear a mask.

Thanks for the info.

I can't imagine hair place employees here in Austin area not been told to wear masks.

Leases are already down. You already have landlords giving rent deferment, reductions, abatement, etc. They know there is nobody else to occupy that space right now.
This is ultimately going to be credit (default) event from a financial perspective. Lessors, banks, vendors, mortgage companies, student loans, credit card companies, etc. The big kahuna question is who is going to take the credit losses; be they partial or full. The government seems awfully willing to be a backstop for a lot of these areas right now. Not sure how long that will last however.

Just remember. Almost every business that fails because of the "new business model", and every freakin' dollar more it cost you to do these things now than a couple months ago, is directly attributed to the Chinese Communist Party. All of it. Brought right to your wallet, front door, and loved ones and friends you lost by the filthy, underhanded CCP.

No it won't. In 6 months most will realize the extremely low risk and won't give a crap if they get the virus or not.

I go to Chinese barbershop. They have 10 chairs, and at minimum usually have 5 people waiting. At 14 dollars, most do a fantastic job!
