Camp Huawni is opening next week. https://camphuawni.com/
While confusing, I think they are worried about having camp with low attendence. Its not economically feasible and coordinating the number of staff, food, etc for the number of kids/families is most likely the issue.culdeus said:The pine cove announcement is confusing. They are saying they will rolling cancel weeks as needed. This is less useful to parents as saying, we will have camp on these dates for sure.tbone94 said:
Pine Cove cancelled overnight camps for week 1 (May 24th-30th)
I think the longhorn announcement is the strongest and will set the tone here. It gives counselors two weeks more or less to get trained in June and show up which seems good enough.

I know they have appealed to former staff to help with donations. Unfortunately, money will be the driving force for a lot of the non-profit camps.

Did anyone ever hear what Stewart and Lonehollow are doing? Mystic is a go- but not until July. They've restructured their camps/lengths. I was told they probably would have closed like Waldemar, but they built that new additional camp at Cypress Creek that is opening. So, wasn't $$$ feasible to follow Waldmar's lead.

Worked at the old Strake back in high school and while at A&M, had a great time. Don't know if they still have any openings but the Swamp Base outside of Lafayette,La is open and that can provide a very different experience in kayaking the Atchafalaya Swamp for 60 miles. Operated by Evangeline Area Council.
1966 to 73 and was program director my last year. Worked on the Grand Lake side when they were operating GL and Tall Timbers. My favorite job was OA Coordinator when they first started doing weekly Ordeals at camp. Work with some great professionals durning the summer, Ralph Child's, Galen Unger, Bob Tillerson (Rex's father),Sterly Dossmann.JABQ04 said:TexasAggie73 said:

Out of curiosity what years? I worked there '96-'04. Was Program Director in '03 and '04. Still bummed it shut down. Was looking forward to visiting the new one this summer. Even now, 16 years later, I still feel like I need to be at camp in summer.

We cancelled our kiddo at the T Bar M June15th camp today. 14 day Self quarantining + temp checks + social distancing didn't sound like a fun camp experience to us. Plus our daughter would have gotten picked up daily by a grandfather who is 75 and didn't seem like worth the risk (although I am sure a ridiculously small risk).
BTW - T Bar M refunded everything but the $100 deposit today.RVAg02 said:RethinkTheWeekend said:

We are mid July. Wondering the same thing.
Just announced that Philmont will not open this summer. Sounds like the New Mexico State government put a end to it. Sorry for all involved especially the community and the scouts who have now lost 2 opportunities in 3 years.ursusguy said:
Philmont----still waiting on official word from the state. The health department wanted more time to go over their 100+ page mitigation plan.

My daughter is scheduled for Space Camp in August. I am hoping that the first week of camp the last week of June runs smoothly.
Has your son been before? My daughter is going into 8th grade this year and also went last year.
Never went to Sea Base, but have heard great things about it. To put in a little plug, the Evangeline Area Council in Lafayette La operates a high adventure on the Atchafala swamp. It's called Swamp Base and they are on FB.TXTransplant said:ag97tx said:

Oh, wow...that's cool! So far, my son's week is still scheduled. He's actually already in AL, with his dad.
He is 15 and just finished 9th grade. He's never been before. How did your daughter like it last year? It must have been great if she wanted to go back.
My son is super excited (we have a couple of family members who work in the space industry, so it's in his blood). I never went as a kid, though, so we have no idea what to expect.
The post about a Philmont just makes my heart hurt. My son went last year, and it was such an amazing experience for him.
I'm also glad, though, that he opted for Space Camp instead of Northern Tier. His troop was scheduled to go in June, and it looks like they won't be opening before July 1 (if at all).
They are supposed to do Sea Base next year. With no school calendar and talk about extending the school year until the end of next June, I'm worried about that, too. He REALLY wants to do Sea Base.
I am so sorry that the trip to Philmont was cancelled. My heart goes out to you and your son. I hope Philmont will amend the age stipulation.Dustoff00 said:
Really hoping Philmont is still a go... My son's Trek got cancelled due to Fires two years ago. Could not go last year as most of his crew was already headed to Northern Tier last summer during the same time frame that was offered, so they deferred to this year as a crew. This will complete his Triple Crown achievement prior to heading to TAMU hopefully in the fall.
