Pine Cove cancelled overnight camps for week 1 (May 24th-30th)
The pine cove announcement is confusing. They are saying they will rolling cancel weeks as needed. This is less useful to parents as saying, we will have camp on these dates for sure.

I think the longhorn announcement is the strongest and will set the tone here. It gives counselors two weeks more or less to get trained in June and show up which seems good enough.
While confusing, I think they are worried about having camp with low attendence. Its not economically feasible and coordinating the number of staff, food, etc for the number of kids/families is most likely the issue.

I know they have appealed to former staff to help with donations. Unfortunately, money will be the driving force for a lot of the non-profit camps.

Heard from two families over weekend that they will not be doing pine cove. They have taken reduced pay and working from home means they don't have to worry about their kids as much and can't see making it work.

Did anyone ever hear what Stewart and Lonehollow are doing? Mystic is a go- but not until July. They've restructured their camps/lengths. I was told they probably would have closed like Waldemar, but they built that new additional camp at Cypress Creek that is opening. So, wasn't $$$ feasible to follow Waldmar's lead.

our kids have gone to T Bar M forever and we have a long history with them. They cancelled sessions 1 and 2 (first and second week of June) but start up with session 3. Looks like they just pushed everything forward two weeks, training camp for staff, etc.

I went to Stewart growing up and was familiar with Waldemar, Mystic, Heart of the hills, etc....what is the deal with Waldemar cancelling?

Lonehollow sold to young life last year as part of the divorce settlement. This is the last time they would be holding camp anyways. I'm surprised they would take the risk of being sued.

Afaik there's no new word out of any of the other hunt area camps.

Buddy of mine was just in Hunt and talked to the Heart of the Hills folks. Apparently they aren't going this year. Deferring all maintenance for the year and waiting until next year.

Sky Ranch rules state my kid can't go because my wife and I are healthcare workers and therefore could possibly be exposing him when we come home from work. He needs a 2 week quarantine away from any workers from high risk areas which we can't give..

Camp Peniel in Marble Falls is a go for camp beginning June 28. They have shortened camp by a day to give more time to sanitize, are allowing cancellations, and rolling kids from cancelled sessions in June to later in the summer as "first priority" on the waitlist. My kids are so excited.

Worked at the old Strake back in high school and while at A&M, had a great time. Don't know if they still have any openings but the Swamp Base outside of Lafayette,La is open and that can provide a very different experience in kayaking the Atchafalaya Swamp for 60 miles. Operated by Evangeline Area Council.

Out of curiosity what years? I worked there '96-'04. Was Program Director in '03 and '04. Still bummed it shut down. Was looking forward to visiting the new one this summer. Even now, 16 years later, I still feel like I need to be at camp in summer.

Really hoping Philmont is still a go... My son's Trek got cancelled due to Fires two years ago. Could not go last year as most of his crew was already headed to Northern Tier last summer during the same time frame that was offered, so they deferred to this year as a crew. This will complete his Triple Crown achievement prior to heading to TAMU hopefully in the fall.

Camp Stewart is on. Our son will be going for three weeks in the June session. Doesn't start until June 19th though (the full sessions are three weeks instead of four this year). I was told other than opening/closing ceremonies that things would be pretty normal.

Looking at Lonehollow's website they will hold camp starting July 11th. They actually have camp in 2021 as well before Young Life takes over in 2022.

I was pretty surprised by Waldemar's decision as well. My girls aren't old enough to attend camp yet though so not really impacted. I don't think "Camp" will be much different though. Main differences that I'm aware of based on communications from our son's camp and friends camps are - opening/closing with parents will be much different, no meals served "family style" and eat on disposable plates and no dances. Other than that everything will pretty much be the same.

T Bar M posted an "explanation" of how things will be different. Lots of social distancing, but I don't know how much that will really happen. I just don't want it to ruin my son's first camp experience.

Philmont hoped to have an answer this past week after meeting with the NM Secretary of Health. They did not come away with a firm answer. They are hoping to gwt approval early this week. Staff is still in a holding pattern with hiring managers "reviewing the availability survey" that was sent out.....ironically, today marks the two year date for the start of the Ute Park fire. In our visiting/volunteer forester meeting 3 weeks ago, New Mexico/Philmont is anticipating a very active fire season this year. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be rolling into Base Camp on the 7/17, and heading to Cito on the 18th.

I hope you are too. His trek is 7/20 and this is his last shot as going in his youth. Although my daughter did get to go as a venture scout after her Sophomore year at TAMU.

We cancelled our kiddo at the T Bar M June15th camp today. 14 day Self quarantining + temp checks + social distancing didn't sound like a fun camp experience to us. Plus our daughter would have gotten picked up daily by a grandfather who is 75 and didn't seem like worth the risk (although I am sure a ridiculously small risk).

1966 to 73 and was program director my last year. Worked on the Grand Lake side when they were operating GL and Tall Timbers. My favorite job was OA Coordinator when they first started doing weekly Ordeals at camp. Work with some great professionals durning the summer, Ralph Child's, Galen Unger, Bob Tillerson (Rex's father),Sterly Dossmann.
If you are on FB, there is a Camp Strake staff group you might like to join. People have posted a lot of pictures.

My oldest has only been going for one year (she is 7). She loved it. We live in Midland and there are a lot of people here who send their kids there. It was really good for her self-confidence and independence.

Just got this email from the Sam Houston Area Council...

As an alternative to summer resident camp, members of Scouts BSA now have the opportunity to register for Merit Badge Days that will be held at Tellepsen Scout Camp on Saturdays in July and August. More information, including how to register, may be found here.

Cub Scouts will have two opportunities for day camp programming this summer:
Virtual Day Camp will be conducted during two sessions in July, free of charge. More information, including how to register, may be found here.

Outdoor Sports Days will be conducted at Camp Brosig and Bovay Scout Ranch in late July and early August. Activities will include BB guns, archery, water activities, fishing and a closing ceremony. More information can be found here, and registration will be open soon.

All council camping facilities will be closed through June 30th.

All district and council meetings, activities, and events through June 14th are cancelled or postponed unless conducted over teleconference or online.

Philmont----still waiting on official word from the state. The health department wanted more time to go over their 100+ page mitigation plan.

Just announced that Philmont will not open this summer. Sounds like the New Mexico State government put a end to it. Sorry for all involved especially the community and the scouts who have now lost 2 opportunities in 3 years.

My daughter is scheduled for Space Camp in August. I am hoping that the first week of camp the last week of June runs smoothly.

Has your son been before? My daughter is going into 8th grade this year and also went last year.

Oh, wow...that's cool! So far, my son's week is still scheduled. He's actually already in AL, with his dad.

He is 15 and just finished 9th grade. He's never been before. How did your daughter like it last year? It must have been great if she wanted to go back.

My son is super excited (we have a couple of family members who work in the space industry, so it's in his blood). I never went as a kid, though, so we have no idea what to expect.

The post about a Philmont just makes my heart hurt. My son went last year, and it was such an amazing experience for him.

I'm also glad, though, that he opted for Space Camp instead of Northern Tier. His troop was scheduled to go in June, and it looks like they won't be opening before July 1 (if at all).

They are supposed to do Sea Base next year. With no school calendar and talk about extending the school year until the end of next June, I'm worried about that, too. He REALLY wants to do Sea Base.

Never went to Sea Base, but have heard great things about it. To put in a little plug, the Evangeline Area Council in Lafayette La operates a high adventure on the Atchafala swamp. It's called Swamp Base and they are on FB.

Yep, my son doesn't know yet, so he is going to be bummed. I attended SeaBase with him 4 years ago, and he was at Northern Tier last year... Both great adventures... We are going to see if any of the other boys/men want to sign up for next year, although most will have aged out... I think they are willing to do an exception for scout/adult ratios for these kids. My daughter wants to go again, she went with a Venture troop last year and without a doubt said she would go again if the opportunity arose.

My daughter went to Session 1 and is now at Session 2. Lots of cabin social distancing and safety protocols so the camp is different but she is still having fun there.
