Got an email today that one of the counselors at the 7 year old's day camp tested positive. According to the email he was exposed on Wednesday. As an added bonus, we just moved and have zero support in Alabama. Luckily, I was able to get him established with a local pediatrician last week, so I actually have a doctor to call. But, for now, he has been banished upstairs and is playing his Switch.

I am guessing he is pleased with this arrangement.

Totally. He's also going to get a TV so he'll have Netflix, Hulu, Disney+. He's living the sweet life that is for sure.

Prayers for him and your family that everyone stays healthy. But man, I'd like 2 weeks to watch what I want on TV, chill, and not worry about bills.

Off topic and don't mean to derail, but where in Alabama are you located? My husband and I and our toddler are moving there next month!

Sorry about the exposure. Hope everything turns out alright.

Considering he's in one of the lowest risk age groups in existence, he'll be exposed to infinitely worse pathogens and potential harm walking around literally every second of every day once he is rereleased back into the world. I know I sound like an *******, but I can't imagine being worked up enough to post this on an online message board. Taking the precaution, that's good and appropriate. Being worked up about it? Not so much.

Now if you said that your elderly parent was exposed, then that's a different scenario altogether.

Ok, ******* post out of the way. You may flame at your leisure.

I too have a 7 year old and he was exposed....by his 18 yr old brother. 18 yr old, 101 fever, aches and pains, no sense of smell or taste for a week. Tested positive. Week and a half later, working out, lifting full on pre-virus.

7 year old, as well as Mom and Dad? No symptoms. I think the Beers will be fine.

Oh, and both the 7 and 18 yr old sat in big brothers room for a week and a half playing video games together. All good.

BTW, just had to go look up Switch. I gotta get him one those, so he'll quit playing on my phone.

It's a really cool system. I recommend getting extra controllers.

She doesn't know if he has the virus. Same thing happened to my 8 year old where someone in his group of 12 at a day camp's parents got it so they removed the kid from camp but I didn't isolate him upstairs for 2 weeks. Most kids that age would show zero symptoms and research is showing that age of kids does not spread it.

Exactly. This fear state, coupled with the most overprotective generation in history (dare I say even worse than the current young "adults?"), is a perfect storm for our children (and really the entire generation if you really think about it).

No one's kid under 10 on this thread has the virus...

And if they do they're not sick and have no idea they even have it. I'm not the one who actually needs to dial it back...

This is most likely not the first time he has been exposed to the virus.

The kid is going to be just fine.

Worrying about kids getting corona should be a 0 on a 0 to 10 scale. People are crazy. I have a 4 month old and 4 year old. I am not worried at all about them getting the virus, just as the data suggests.

My sister and nephews tested positive for the virus. Very little symptoms from my sister, none from the kids. My kids still got to play with their cousins.

Kids can spread it, they are just much less likely too. That's why opening schools is an easier decision.

But it is 100% wrong to say that kids can't spread it and I think its worth couching our language with caveats so that we don't tread into spreading falsehoods.

Serious question -

How can y'all say he's going to be fine? My huge issue with this virus is that we don't know the long term affects. Yet he's "going to be fine".

You all understand that it doesn't "go away." Covid is like Herpes, HIV, and the chicken pox. Once you have it, you have it forever. Herpes brings life long outbreaks, Chicken Pox brings Shingles, and HIV brings death.

Yet you all want your kids to get it.

Hard to find, w had one already but one of our friends figured out when Wal Mart bear then got their shipments in and checked every day until they struck gold...took 5ish days.

6, soon to be 7 year old loves his and the two older kids 11 and 9 play quite a bit of Mario cart on it as well.

This is not correct.

If you have herpes or HIV, you will continue to test positive for both. Your body does not clear the infections.

If you have SARS-CoV-2, you will test negative after your body clears the infection. Like influenza.

Yeah I do not believe this is true. COVID is actually nothing like herpes, HIV, or chicken pox. They are all viruses but that is about all they share.

Because that's what we do as parents. What is the point of worrying about it now? I've got about 100 other things that I need to focus and stress about that I can control.

False.

Odd, this is the first time I've read someone making this claim. Where did you find this incorrect information?

Exactly. Exposure is going to happen. No amount of helicoptering and babying can assure this isn't going to occur. Minimizing exposure is great, but to the point of driving yourself insane, and being overprotective and paranoid, is doing your kid a disservice.

Almost every other pathogen is more dangerous to that age group than covid. Worry about those if you're going to be scared of the world.
