so Europe has been in their "second wave" for at least a month, right?

Mask compliance is way higher than 7% in America.

But again, for whatever reason it's beyond a lot of people that transmission rates are driven by many different factors. Whether cases are going up or not is not necessarily evidence of masks not working. It's what are cases doing relative to what they would be doing without masks. And unless you address that, then you're analysis is incomplete.

Also cases and deaths in the US are on a significant spike right now, just as they are in the entire northern hemisphere... Including "herd immunity" Sweden. Sweden has more new confirmed cases in the last week than they've ever had. They've started to up their social restrictions as well. It's going to be an awful winter for everyone, and anything we can do that might make it a little bit better, we should probably do that - like say wear a mask.

That's not true though. The CDC has recommended against them before due to improper handling actually increasing spread. I wear mine, but I do think they may be equally bad as good, especially amongst children and those with improper fit and handling. I probably fall into improper handling as mine hasn't been washed in six months.

The CDC recs came from years of pandemic planning under Bush and Obama. They were thrown out the window due to politics. Sweden is really the only country that followed what we invested in.

This is straight from the CDC:

Cases and deaths all over Europe are growing exponentially for most countries, including many that were hit hard. There's definitely something else at play here beyond policy, as some countries haven't seen a first OR second wave. If their policy (Finland and Norway) isn't all that different than Germany, then what's the difference?

around 60,000 cases today in France. Based on population that would equate to about 360,000 here in the US. Can you imagine what the news would be like with those numbers?

Yep, It's awful. Goalposts keep shifting and are now at the "well, it MAY do long term damage so it's just as bad as death" or something since only .01% of people who get it die.

Are you trying to say 1% or 0.01%? Assuming you are a Texas A&M graduate, I ask that you think carefully before you reply.

Well, this a math comment not a Covid comment. What is 0.01% of the entire US population?

A Covid comment: not really fair to talk about overall chance of death since it varies so wildly by age. For a kid, it may be closer to 0.001%. A 40 year old, maybe 0.1%. A 60 year old, maybe 1%, and 80 year old probably over 10%.

You're not following, that's fine.

0.01% of the entire US population is ~33,000 people.

Yes, it is. But, by trying to show your superior math skills you're failing to make your point.

Hence why I said "of people who get it".

Apparently this is rocket science.

Yes, apparently this is rocket science - I had assumed it would have just sunk in when showing the numbers.

You said 0.01% of people who get it die. Even if everyone in the US got it, at a 0.01% death rate that would be 33,000 total deaths. In reality, the US has logged over 200,000 deaths. You could have said "I don't believe the official death tally due to Covid, it's 1/10th what they say" or "I think everyone in the US has been infected four separate times", but you did neither, so you are helpless.

I saw Italy numbers going up but thought it was odd we don't hear, in the US, about their hospitals being overwhelmed again. And it is odd that doesn't seem to be a main US topic, but maybe because back in March we didn't have much going on Covid wise ourselves.

But I did search and see if in fact there was an issue in Italian hospitals, and found this:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/12/world/europe/italy-coronavirus-bathroom-death.html

Seems like new outbreak is in southern region while up north was the earlier area with a heavy caseload.

Well there are so many horrifying details in that story that it's difficult to focus on just one.

Sounds like Covid is bad over there, but leadership is worse.

Different climate regions definitely have different flu/upper respiratory virus seasons. Italy is a comparatively elderly nation, and was very vulnerable (still is).

Meanwhile, Sweden is doing great vs. excess mortality for the year.
