This is nothing more than some prof getting a journal publication and 15 mins of fame that he gets to put on his performance evaluation.

The variant conversation is somewhat ridiculous given we were doing about zero genomic sequencing the first year or so and didn't start until...oh about the time you started hearing about variants. There were mutated strains floating around since this thing went global, just no (or very very limited) quantifying them.
