Fortunately, the single case of it resulted in mild symptoms.
Quote:

GHRC first detected BV-1 in a saliva sample taken from a Texas A&M student as part of the university's ongoing COVID-19 testing program. The sample tested positive at GHRC on March 5. It was re-tested and confirmed at a federally regulated lab at CHI St. Joseph Regional Hospital. The student resides off-campus, but is active in on-campus organizations. The student was given Texas A&M's general reporting guidelines.

The student later provided a second sample that tested positive on March 25, indicating the variant may cause a longer lasting infection than is typical of COVID-19 for adults ages 18-24. A third sample obtained on April 9 was negative and revealed no evidence of virus.

The student presented mild cold-like symptoms in early to mid-March that never progressed in severity and were fully resolved by April 2.

Can we call it the Fran variant since it seems to linger much longer than needed?

The Tuscaloosa variant is currently utilizing the transfer portal to load up with variants from other parts of the country and will be back as strong as ever.....

Yep.

Which is why we're starting to hear about 'DOUBLE MUTANT' strains.

Well since deaths and hospitalizations have plummeted along with cases in most places they need something to hyperventilate about for fear porn.

I have to believe there are legitimate reasons to identify and track new variants: more quickly develop vaccine variants or boosters for variants that do become more deadly or transmissible, etc.

I don't believe that they're going to use every single new variant to re-enact shutdowns or prolong masks, social distancing, etc.
Agree that it needs to be studied. But some in the media and others with agendas are using the variants as a way to try to slow down any efforts to open things up fully and using these new variants to keep unnecessary fear around within the public.

I for one find this to be good news. We can spread it around town and get immune and then use it to our advantage in football season by getting the other team sick.

"Sequencing helps to provide an early warning system for new variants," Neuman said. The scientists at the lab say they do not yet understand the full significance of BV-1, but believe the variant "highlights an important need for rigorous surveillance and genomic testing," especially among young adults who are asymptomatic or show mild symptoms.
Agree 100% with this statement as the variants should be studied. That said, policy should in no way be formed based on something we do not know the "full significance" of is all I am saying. I have 0 reason to even be the least concerned at this point and a lot more would need to be studied.

Biggest one day jump in the world?

You can do anything with numbers.

The jump is in India and it skews the "world" stats. The rest of the world is stable.

Seems to me that India(and a lot of the world, for that matter) have let up with only 7% vaccinated. Claiming scary variants is fear mongering. They have little vaccinated and/or natural immunity, and if they had higher, they wouldn't be spiking. Regardless of variants.

Also, India still has less per capita than many countries, from what I read. Obviously it's all happening quickly is the concern. Either way, I hope their spike tapers off soon.

We're nearing the end, and a lot of people have more lockdown fatigue than ever before. As vaccines roll out, many across the world that have been locked down and haven't spread the virus as much as places like Texas has, are now spiking. Variant or no variant. It's covid 19, and the death rate is expected to be the same.

Another report.

"Scientists at Texas A&M University's Global Health Research Complex say they've detected a new Covid-19 variant that shows signs of a more contagious strain that causes more severe illness and appears to be resistant to antibodies."

My guess is, it's the hit the panic button, we are so close but so far away, here's a new one, assume the worst, but oh, nothing comes of it and it really doesn't bypass immunity for most. Just like all other 4000 variants out there. But now the one that finally gets through is the college station one? Meh, color me skeptical and thinking, not bloody likely.
