#78 makes the Chase!

So any thoughts on Spingate? I really like Clint but that whole end of the race was shady by Bowyer and Vickers, who both did some strange things to let Logano get ahead of them.

It all looks pretty fishy from the radio chatter before it happened, to the way Waltrip congratulated Truex after the race. Supposedly he told Truex he's "got awesome teammates." That's what happens when you install a stupidass points system that takes the leaders points away and resets 12 cars back to 0. It opens the can of worms for stuff like this to happen. The Chase is a sham that I wish would DIE.

I don't think the Chase is a total sham, it created some good drama this last few weeks. Its just the result of powerful multicar teams. F1 has fought this forever.

Texas, Charlotte, Talladega, Bristol, Martinsville, Indianapolis....headed to Michigan in June next year.

The Vickers radio was way worse than Bowyer's.

NASCAR:

Newman in, Truex out. MWR fined 300K. All 3 MWR drivers docked 50 points. Ty Norris suspended indefinitely.

No dice for Gordon cause you can't penalize Logano for not having anything to do with it...sucks for JG, but some serious justice handed down.

The precedent has been set.

sucks for Gordon, actually. Truex had no business getting in with the way the race was going.

Good news for Bowyer(being a team player) is that the points were docked pre-chase, so he'll still be in the same slot going into the chase as he was, points-wise.

What was said on Vickers radio? I saw they called for a weird pitstop but didn't see what was said.

he questioned them multiple times saying "what? why would we do that?" type of stuff, then they say "we need that 1 point, pit now. We need that 1 point."

Vickers then goes "oh, do I have a tire going down or something?"

then on pit road, he asks again if there was a tire down and Norris got on the radio and said "Brian I'll explain later. I owe you a big ole kiss."

IMO, the penalty was not enough. Nothing should have happened to Vickers (his crew chief should have been fined and suspended though). He was just following orders, and as a part time drive of the 55, he's in no position to argue. Nothing should have been done to him.

I agree with Truex getting docked 50 points to let Newman in, even though Truex was just driving (he wasn't responsible for any wrong doing).

I agree the GM should have been suspended indefinitely.

I disagree with Bowyer's penalty...way too lenient. When it's all said and done, Bowyer isn't really seeing any kind of punishment. This isn't even a slap on the wrist for the 15 car. Bowyer's crew chief should have been fined and suspended for the entire Chase. Bowyer should have been suspended for 1-2 races in the Chase. If they want to send a message, that's it. You pull a stunt like this, your championship hopes are finished. There's no excuse for a stunt like this; and I lost a TON of respect for Bowyer. This is bush league ****.

The ONLY good thing about this was that it got Jeff Gordon left out, which is fine with me.

Hardly...the 55 is Vickers ride now permanently.

Really? He's taking the ride over full time next year. He didn't start out with the team at the beginning of the year.

This statement from NASCAR came out this afternoon:

They really need to suspend Gilliland, Logano, and Bowyer for a few races. They also need to suspend the crew chiefs indefinitely for all 3 drivers...this is a bunch of bull****.

it's tough because not only has this happened in the past(teammates doing shady **** to help teammates), it is almost expected with the money and exposure and drama with the creation of the chase. However, I don't think I've ever seen it so blatant and out in the open like they did last saturday...which has allowed NASCAR to come in and lay down the law. Any team that does what MWR did in the future and gets caught will have worse penalties than that I guarantee. Hopefully it fixes it. It would be a crappy way for JG to get in the chase, but I hope he does and Logano gets booted with the Gilliland stuff. Before the spin and all the pitting he was in the chase anyways.

Also, we are on page 4 of this thread, and I don't know if it has been mentioned or not...but how awesomely fitting is the thread title for a NASCAR thread. So great.

NASCAR adds Jeff Gordon as the 13th driver of the 2013 Chase on Friday the 13th!

So essentially no one is being penalized (as far as the Chase goes) and Gordon (who I do like) is being rewarded.

what smells? He was in the chase with 9 to go...Bowyer manipulates the end by spnning and then he and Vickers pit for no reason to allow Logano to move up enough spots to pass Gordon in points for the top 10, giving Truex the WC instead of Logano who would have taken it over him...meanwhile Logano and Gililand teams also conspire to let Logano pass him to "make sure" and get the extra spot as well.

After that came out, only one driver was not in the chase due to the manipulation by the teams...JG. I think it was the right move. They can't kick the 22 out of the chase because deals have happened in the past in random races. But it was clearly in order to ensure a spot in the chase.

I dunno. It's weird for sure. But I don't think this is any conspiracy to get JG in the chase. It's more the opportunity to finish cleaning up after the blatant manipulation of the race last week.

Glad NASCAR added the 24.. Won't matter though because Jimmie will be taking number 6 this year

NAPA dumps Truex and MWR after the race manipulation. Truex had it such a good deal, NAPA extended his sponsorship through 2015. But all that's gone now.

That's a huge hit to mwr. They've been together a long time.

And MWR has dumped Truex. On the surface, I feel sorry for Truex, a likeable sort.
