BATTLE IN BEANTOWN MEET PREVIEW:
The 2-0 Aggie men and women are hitting the airport and taking to the skies for the first time this 2023 cross country season to the Beantown! "What? Beantown?" you ask? Well, beans were popular among the natives of the now Boston lands, and something the New Englanders adopted themselves. The Puritans, being firm believers of the Lord's day of rest, would prepare their beans on Saturday to keep them full (and allow them to take it easy) on Sundays. Before long, Boston's travelers began to call the city "Beantown". Our Aggies have been preparing their beans all summer and fall, and they'll be more than ready to unleash the beans this Friday, September 29th, at the Battle in Beantown!
NOTABLE FOES:
The Aggie men aren't the only bean connoisseurs arriving in the Beantown this weekend. On the men's side.. led by #13 ranked Harvard (as of USTFCCA's 9/19 poll ), the competition will include a conference foe in Auburn along with many Ivy League schools. The tentative line up is Auburn, Boston College, Connecticut, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Hofstra, Maine, MIT, Monmouth, Northeastern, Penn, Rhode Island, Salt Lake, SNHU, Texas A&M, Toledo, and UMass Lowell. Individuals to watch include Auburn's 2022 NCAA XC qualifier Ryan Kianne and Harvard standouts Acer Iverson and Graham Banks who clocked 13:26 and 13:24 in the 5000m just this spring.
The Aggie women will face off against a large field highlighted by Toledo (formally ranked #28, now RV) and Harvard (also receiving votes). The tentative lineup for this Friday is Auburn, Boston College, Connecticut, Cornell, Dartmouth, Elon, Harvard, Hofstra, James Madison, Maine, MIT, Monmouth, Penn, Princeton, Rhode Island, Salt Lake, SNHU, St. John's, Texas A&M, Toledo, Trinity (Conn.), UMass Lowell, and Villanova.
The Battle in Beantown is one of the premier meets across the country this weekend and will be a good opportunity for the Aggies to gain some experience in a large competitive field as well as beat some teams that could potentially earn them points down the road in the case for a national bid.
THE AGGIE LINE UP:
ERIC CASAREZ: With an ALL-SEC XC finish, an indoor and outdoor school record in the 5K (both in 13:42), a new mile PR of 4:02, and points scored in the SEC indoor 5K, SEC outdoor 5k and SEC outdoor 10K, we're eager to see how Casarez keeps the ball rolling into the 2023 XC season. The vet had two races under his belt before his sixth place finish at Paul Short last fall, but with the level of experience Eric brings to the table, he should open up as one of the favorites in the Beantown.
CHANDON CHIKKARA: Similar to Casarez, the vet looks to open his season up in Boston. Chikkara had some of the most range on the team last year, running 23:46 in the 8K, 4:04 in the mile, 14:01 in the 5K, and making it to the second round in the NCAA 1500m prelims after qualifying for regionals with a 3:43.41. We're excited to see Chikkara don the maroon and white for the first time this fall, and he will no doubt be an immediate asset.
JONATHAN CHUNG: Off a 5th place finish at the Texas A&M Invitational, the 2022 NCAA XC qualifier is surely ready to have Casarez and Chikkara back in the mix. Chung started off last week's invite hot, but eased off into a 5th place finish. We expect with a larger field and two of our returners back in the mix, Chung will have himself a very productive visit to Massachusetts.
JOSEPH BENN: Mr. Consistency himself, the senior cruised to a 6th place finish in 24:19 at the home opener last week. Looking comfortable throughout, he ran his second fastest time on Dale Watts ever. A quick glance at Benn's results over the last four years shows that he'll be in the mix this Friday and will be scoring points for the Aggies.
COOPER CAWTHRA: While we wouldn't consider Cawthra a sleeper, he certainly surprised when he ran away with the individual title at the Aggie Invitational. Running a 31 second PR in the 8K and hanging with the chase pack before making a move in the last 3K, the miler showed he's been prepping some aerobic beans all summer. We'll be looking for Cooper to keep the party bumpin in the Beantown.
AIDEN RODILLES: The sophomore missed the first 8K of the season, but the third overall finisher at TCU shouldn't be overlooked. A runner we'd expect to be even stronger at the 8K than the 5K, we will definitely have our eye on Rodilles in Boston.
JACK JOHNSTON: A very impressive opening 8K at Dale Watts shouldn't come as a big surprise if you've been following the Prosper native. Finishing second at TCU and running 24:23 at home sets him up nicely for the meet at Boston College. We're betting the freshman continues to improve with a larger, deeper field and two more Aggie retuners added to the mix.
SIDDHARTH JAYARAMAN: Finishing 6th for the Aggies last week, Jayaraman built upon his TCU race and should only be stronger in the Beantown. A late season menace, we're looking for the senior to continue to build throughout the regular season as we get closer and closer to the postseason.
NOAH WILLOWS: Surprisingly everyone but probably not himself, the fish finished 5th for the Aggies in a formidable 25:01 8K debut. Willows is knocking on the door of being a contributor in his first season, and with some of the "new" knocked off the 8K, we can't wait to see what Willows brings to the table in Boston.
ZACH MUNGER: Similar to Rodilles, the freshman missed the first home meet of the season, but also comes off a stellar debut at TCU, we'll be watching to see what Munger can pull off in the 8K distance. His second place finish at TCU and a 9:01 3200m race at state just last spring gives us a lot of confidence in what beans Zach's been cooking.
MADDIE LIVINGSTON: Dominating the field at the A&M invitational, the 10000m specialist should be a force to be reckoned with in Massachusetts with the extra kilometer. We're eager to see her mix it up with the rest of the low sticks on Friday.
KENNADY FONTENOT: Finishing 4th overall and the 2nd for the Aggies, if she hadn't already, Fontenot cements herself as an important asset for the Aggies. We're excited to see the sophomore in a deeper field and to continue putting more racing experience under her belt early in her collegiate career.
MADISON BROWN: We expected the D2 All-American to be an immediate contributor to the Aggies, and that's exactly what Brown did. Finishing 5th overall and 3rd for the Aggies, like Livingston, I'd expect her to only get better with the extra kilometer.
SHEWAYE JOHNSON: Unfazed from her impressive race at TCU, the freshman bounced back to a 7th place overall finish in her first outing at Dale Watts. Her and Fontenot have not shied away from the opportunity to fill the hole left from some of last year's graduates.
EMMA LITTLE: The Aggies' #5 runner twice in a row, Little is also cementing herself as one to watch in the 2023 XC season. We're excited to see what the sophomore does next in her first big meet of the year.
AMANDA HOGAN: Just like Little, Hogan has had very consistent first two races, and when a sport can be as unpredictable as cross country, consistency is everything. Amanda has set herself up well to only get better into the late season.
KATELYN BUCKLEY: Just 1.2 seconds separated Hogan and Buckley at the A&M Invite, and similar to Benn, it's hard to beat the reliability Buckley brings to the table week after week. We expect her to be a factor in the Beantown just as she has been the first two races of the season.
BROOK FORBES: The class of 2026 is deep, and just like Hogan, Little, and Fontenot mentioned earlier, these Aggies have just continued to get better. She moved up well through the back end of the race and that patience will pay dividends come Friday.
NICOLE CHASTAIN: Moving up 12 places between 2K and 5K, Chastain flexed some experience at the Aggie Invite. We're excited to see what comes from the additional kilometer in Beantown.
MADDIE JONES: The college station native PR'd by 4 seconds from the TCU invite and looks to be another important depth piece in her first year. She'll be racing her first out of state meet Friday along with Johnson.
The Battle in Beantown will take place this Friday, September 29th. It will be held in Boston, Massachusetts by Boston College. The women's featured 5K will begin at 12:00 pm ET with the gun going off for the Men's Featured 8K at 12:30 pm.
