Day 3 Preview

https://flashresults.ncaa.com/Outdoor/2026/FirstRounds/West/index.htmWe are going into day 3 and that means it's business time. This is where the elite separate from the rest. This is where the work does the talking. It's survive and advance. We are now at the national quarterfinals for each region. 24 athletes, 12 will advance in each event to the national finals in Eugene, Oregon.
It's all about the men today, but first let's talk about what a day our women had. 4 women punched their ticket to Oregon: Katelyn Fairchild (javelin), McKenzie Fairchild (javelin), Morgan Davis (long jump), Carlie Weiser (shot put). Then we had a great day on the track as well. Camryn Dickson, Anya Jackson, and Jasmine Montgomery all qualified for Saturday's quarterfinal in both the 100 and the 200. Lacarthea Cooper and Jahnile Registre advanced in the 400, and Jaiya Covington advanced in the 100 hurdles. What a day for our women!
The schedule will look a little different today. The steeplechase and 5000 meter dash will be on the schedule today, as well as, both relays. Aside from the two long distance races who have all 48, every other race has been cut down to 24. Every race aside from the 1500 and up will have 3 heats of 24 runners. The top 3 in each heat will automatically advance, then the 3 next fastest times advance as well. There will be no Aggie men in the steeple or 1500. For the Michael Moiben and the 5000, there are 2 heats of 24. The 5 fastest and the next two fastest times will advance.
There are also some field events today: discus, high jump, and triple jump. In the discus, Ethan Sanders will represent us. The senior goes in ranked 40th, but in an event where some people have huge pr's due to wind and location and circumstances play a big factor into those, it's a lot different when the playing field is level. In the high jump we have freshman Etoro Bassey who is ranked 4th after his leap of 7'3.75 at conference. He's peaking right now and I expect him to easily qualify, but high jump can be volatile. Misses play a big part, but usually 7'1 will be the deciding jump. In the triple jump we have 3 Aggies competing in senior Daniel Falode, junior Jaden Harris, along with sophomore Jaydon Shield. They are ranked 17th, 32nd and 33rd. I like the competitiveness and fire in these guys. Hopefully they can get out to a huge jump today.
Things on the oval kick off with the 4x100 relay. Without two of our fastest guys in Micah Larry and Richard Lee Jr, it's been a rough season for this relay. They go in ranked 14th out of the 24 teams behind the likes of Sam Houston, Grand Canyon, Long Beach State, and Cal State Fullerton in the region. Still I believe we are capable of getting this relay to Oregon. There's always chaos in this event. Matthew Maldima will lead things off before handing it off to David Foster, who will hand off to Blake Holland on the curve, then off to Keanu Jones to anchor. That's how it's been most of the season. They are in the second heat and ranked 5th in it. We'll have some work to do and need to run our absolute best. Getting out hard and getting ourselves in the mix early will be key.
We won't have anyone on the track again till 6:15 in the 110 hurdles. We'll have two athletes and both in the first heat. Ja'Qualon Scott in lane 5 and freshman DJ Taylor in lane 3. It's the fastest heat in my opinion. Scott looked very strong on Wednesday. Demario Prince of Baylor, has the fastest season's best in the heat, but I think it will be JQ winning it. Dj Taylor goes in ranked 7th, but I want to see another PB for him. Then directly after will be the 100 where we will see David Foster. He got second at this meet two years ago running a 9.91 with a 2.9 wind. However this season he hasn't ran near that. His best 100 this year was in this prelims, so maybe he's peaking at the right time and will surprise us again. He came into this weekend ranked 25th in the race. There's two clear cut favorites in his heat, but there will be a huge battle for third.
Then we get off the straightaway and into the 400 and 800 up next. Kimar Farquharson shocked everyone when he ran a lifetime best of 45.18 in the prelims. He's always been capable of fast times with how well he runs on the relays and he finally put one together Wednesday. I still believe he's capable of more. His heat is the only one without any top 20 ncaa runners in it. So a similar run should have him win it or at least be top 3, he'll be in lane 6. In the same heat in lane 9 is sophomore Musa Isah who also ran a personal best Wednesday of 45.93. It'll be the slowest pb in the heat, but let's see if he rises to the occasion again. In heat 2 and similar to Isah, is Eric Hemphill in lane 9. Hemphill's had a long journey as an Aggie and has battled injuries but he's running his best now as a senior.
Next up we double the lap count and move onto the 800 where FOUR AGGIES will be competing, making up 1/6 of the field. In heat 1 we'll have Reece Sharman-Newell. I believe it's a favorable heat. He has the 3rd fastest PR in the race so let's hope that holds true. We'll see what the pace is like. In the next heat is Grant Ashby who looked very strong on Wednesday. He is in a tough heat but I think it'll go out fast so let's hope he can finish strong again or run a fast time. In heat 3 we'll have Peter Narumbe and Stefon Dodoo. This is probably the toughest heat, but it's the last heat so it'll be favorable to those looking for a time qualifier. Narumbe is capable of winning it, but Tyrice Taylor of Arkansas is fast. Dodoo has the 5th fastest time in the heat, but has been running extremely well as of late. Perhaps him and Narumbe can pull off some team tactics. This event will be huge for us and I really hope we can get 2 or more into the national finals.
Then we'll have Ja'Qualon Scott in the 400 hurdles. He'll be in heat 2 and I think will cruise to an easy victory. The next fastest competitor to him has a PB 1.6 seconds slower. Another smooth and easy day in the office for JQ. The last individual race will be the 5000. Michael Moiben will go in ranked 34th. He's better at the 10k distance. He will be in the second heat of 24 so that's always favorable. There are 4 of the ncaa's top ten in that same heat, so it's going to be extremely tough. I like the way Moiben races though.
Last, but not least, will be the 4x400. The Aggies will be in heat 2 lane 7. They are easily the fastest team in the heat, 3 seconds better season's best than the next fastest team of BYU. It will be interesting to see who runs. I don't think Lawson Jacobs is healthy enough and you wouldn't want to risk a more complicated injury. The two locks are Kimar Farquharson and Eric Hemphill. The other two will most likely be Musa Isah and Demarco Escobar. The quartet we ran at conference where they did extremely well. Should be an easy qualifier. Just hold on to that baton and don't get disqualified lol.
Today's a big day. While upsets, chaos, false starts, and mishaps are always variables in meets like this; this is where the elite separate themselves and punch their ticket to Eugene. There's little room for error. There's no off day or off race. You have to be at your best. Let's hope all our guys have a clean and dominant performance. Let's punch some more tickets and BTHO the west!!!!!!!!!!!!
