I will admit that Selena was pretty far outside my cultural sphere, but a few of my TexMex friends are sharing this (This imagery practice is also outside my sphere)

We lived in New Braunfels at the time and the number of blue eyed, blonde haired, middle school aged German girls crying over someone they'd never heard a song from was comical
She was telling that story on a podcast once with no background other than it was a culture shock to move to Texas. The host was nodding along thinking it was a 9/11 story (they were also from Connecticut) and then busted out laughing when she said it was Selena.

Rob's politics was tragic but his murder was even more tragic of course. RIP
