The Wife and I were wondering why there is a long expanse of I-10 east of Houston that is new, construction free (I know!), 6 lanes, and 65 mph.

More opportunities to write tickets, so it's probably the county.

Psychopaths that use cruise control in the left lanes because it gives them a god-like feeling; they decide who is late and who does and does not have high blood pressure.

And, why are the speed limits not stated in furlongs per fortnight?

I think the state has some say in the roads they maintain, right? That way, some little county in west Texas can't crank it down to 55 mph to enhance revenue.

I never thought of it that way, and have never done it. Now with that description however…

Could be lower in response to incidents. They just lowered it in Dallas on 75 through the city from 70 to 65 because off the number of accidents. Maybe people were hauling ass and people died.

Wrong thread lol.

Many years ago they had lowered the speed limit to like 55 or 60 on I-10 between Beaumont and Houston. The reasoning (or at least part of it) had to do with pollution. That was awful as I made that drive a lot and 55-60 on a a 4-5 lane highway is sloooowww.

They raised the speed limit on Interstate highways from 55 to 65 the same year I got my driver's license, 1987. No point to make, other than I can remember driving all over the country at 55 mph as a child. At least the speed limit was 55. My father had a fuzz-buster and tended to drive about 80.

maybe. West of Kerr county it is 80 and the county line is the demarcation. DPS told me that the county decides.

The governing authorities set the legal speed limits.

But dastardly engineers make the recommendations.

Part of it is the Houston area smog reduction plans included reduced speed limits for Harris County and bordering counties. Also, the law allowing the 75 mph speed limits has limits on the population of the county the road is in. The 65 MPH speed limit on I-10 West includes the stretch through Waller County, and goes to 75 as soon as you cross the Brazos into Austin County.

Beyond Chambers County its because the road is dangerous. Why is it still like that after reconstruction? Inertia, laziness, lack of attention to detail, you know, the pillars of governance.

I remember when the eastern extension of the George Bush turnpike opened in Dallas (over to I-30), there were no speed limits posted for a few months. The message at the time was that they would do speed surveys and use the average speed to inform speed limits. Despite my best efforts to skew the average upward, they locked it at 70.

The speed limit is 68 because if you go 69 you eat it.

They have traffic engineers and they usually set it by numbers of accidents, sight distances, entrance or exit ramps etc. My neighbor in SA used to do that for the state and counties.

Vojvodich had his deputies set up the system alongside San Pedro Avenue near Bitters Road Monday morning. Within a one-hour period, it had detected 340 speeding drivers. The goal of using the system, Vojvodich said, is to educate the public.

I live off 306 in New Braunfels heading towards Canyon Lake. There are different speed limits each direction just after Gruene and there's Sheriffs giving tickets on that section daily. It's ridiculous

Just go to court, request a jury trial, and ask for your constitutional right to confront your accuser. Then if a cop shows up to play the role of accuser, ask if they were there on the day and time you are alleged to have been speeding.

I know they once did. We had a meeting with them and city council about an area that had several car accidents. As I recall the speed limit was 55, there was a pretty nasty curve in the road near a large church and a large subdivision. Traffic had very little ability to see someone puling out of either.

This had gone back and forth for a couple months, they appeared at a council meeting and said they had done a traffic study and actually the speed limit could be 60 through that area and because of that, they could not lower the speed limit. And that the number of accidents was no more than other areas in town. I told them then your traffic study was probably done by the same idiots who designed a shared turn line (traffic meeting head on in one lane before either could turn). And asked for their data on other areas with a similar number of accidents (there were none). Someone on council wrote someone in Austin and the speed limit got lowered.
