Just finished the book and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Some of my favorite parts:

-Cuba becoming the financial center of the world (don't know why I find that so funny).

-The two space stations.

-Dogs v. zombies. I can't believe that part is left out of the audio book.

-N. Korea disappearing. If I'm S. Korea, I'm a tad bit curious about what the hell happened there. At least send some long range patrol dogs across the DMZ and see what they find.

And how much PSI can a zombie withstand? It seems like a lot G activity is still going on underwater. Maybe the survival guide addresses that.

David Crawford. The book came out on Amazon a couple of weeks ago. It's one of the better SHTF reads if you can get past the amateurish writing. The dude needs to find a better editor for the sequel.

Anybody else expect a chapter on the blimp vehicles and what their roll ultimately was?

Good recommendation. Downloading the Kindle sample now.

Lights Out was great. In some ways, One Second After is even better, and a probably more realistic look at an EMP event. One Second After is set on the East Coast, and it is interesting to see the different problems they face based on geography and population buildup than they do in Lights Out.

The human body is mostly water, so I don't know how 'crushed' a person/zombie could get.

It was my ignorant understanding that once a zombie got water logged, ie the lungs and other open cavities in the body become filled with water, pressure depth isn't a factor because you are now equalized.

I finished WWZ over the holidays and loved it, but I am embarassed to say that I have no idea what "pilot" you guys are talking about. What chapter was that? What was the gist?

I'm sure it will come back to me the second I see a few details, but damn.

I meant to put a winky face.

I wouldn't really post it. Don't want the ban.

Also it's just the rough draft. Lots of spelling mistakes and format issues.

The book is sitting under my christmas tree that i havent taken down yet. It will be read within the next few day. After reading so many comments on here about it im pretty excited. I also have the zombie survival guide.
Wondering which one i should read first if it matters.

Got this for Christmas and finished it in a week or so. I really enjoyed it. I liked the style of it and it really made a good human connection. It did a good job of being a zombie book that isn't really about zombies.

I am FAR from a horror guy. I took a chance on The Walking Dead and got this book based on that thread. Glad I did. Good stuff.

I have been trying to get the SO to read this and can't get past the zombie idea.

Great book though, page turning and didn't realize how quickly it went by.

I'm nearly finished and so far I'd say it's an entertaining read. Brooks clearly put a lot of thought into this and looked at it from quite a few perspectives that I would have never considered. A few questions...

- In the section where people flee to Canada, the narrator talks about when she was suffering from starvation and the neighbors were cooking (clearly implied they were cannibalizing someone). Her parents get into a huge fight, leave the trailer(?), sound of shots firing, and when they come back, the mom has a snow ball over her eye and the girl says something about a great tasting stew. Did they kill the neighbors? What happened to the mom's eye? Did they eat it?

- Near the end of the book it says there were around 200 million zombies in the US. Why are there so many zombies? This is one thing that typically bugs me about zombie fiction. Once the outbreak has spread sufficiently, the majority of zombie attacks should result in devoured corpses - it would be a rarity that somebody escapes an attack and manages to die and reanimate in a safe place. I know it's nit-picky, but for a book that is so detail-oriented it seems strange to overlook/not explain this point.

The part in Canada you were asking about is referring to three separate instances.

1. Wife and husband fight over lack of food/supplies and the husband hits the wife.

2. Husband relents and goes to trade for the 'human' stew so his kids can eat.

3. Later, the dad kills someone trying to steal from them.

None of these events are specifically stated but are merely implied since it is the point of view of the young girl telling her family's story.

Thanks, I probably shouldn't read when I'm tired.

That section reminded me of The Road. In some ways I think desperate people are scarier than zombies.

I've read about half of it and just can't seem to stay interested. I think it is the question and answer format that bothers me. Can't put my finger on it.

Last week I read through both of J.L. Bourne's Day By Day Armageddon books. Loved them both. They are told in the form of a survivor's diary. Could not put them down. 3rd one due out in the 3rd quarter of 2011.

Were they unable to find a quote in the book without a typo to put on the top of the page?

Reading WWZ now... about a third of the way through. A fast read and decent, but I am not totally blown away yet. Its early though.

Other people I identified from the book...

I think it is pretty clear that the President was Colin Powell and the VP was Howard Dean.

i also think Howard Stern was mentioned towards the end when someone was saying that so many people died by the radio guy who makes fart jokes and lewd humor is still on the radio.

i am about 100 pages in and it is slow reading for me.
i usually finish a book in 2-3 days and i started this 2 weeks ago. maybe because it reads like non-fiction.

i started satan burger tonight and am 1/3 of the way through already.

Maybe the zombie genre isn't your cup of tea?

I think thread over pumped it for me. I just finished and am not that impressed.

I will say this, I listened to an audio version and the production of this book was one of the best I have ever heard and I have listened to several hundred books. Very well done with the multiple readers and accents!

The book just did nothing for me! I think more zombie interaction would have been better. I don't know, I didn't care for it!

Oh well, on to the next one. I started reading Bush's book and just started listening to a recommendation from another thread, "Unbroken". I am on a historical kick right now. Just finished, before WWZ, a book called, "The War" which is based on interviews with WWII survivors. Very well done.

seems to me the book was only about Zombies because they provided a great backdrop against which the root nature of man, in all our glory and insanity, could be explored

I wasn't blown away by the book. The first few stories I found compelling and they pulled me in, but by the midpoint I was losing interest. I liked the concept of telling the story through interviews, maybe if different authors had contributed it would have worked better for me.

Because of this thread I went ahead and purchased World War Z and moved it on to next in the batting order of books to read. Hopefully it will keep my interest.

Also... Let me know how you like "Unbroken", I thought it was great.

I really enjoyed it, but I can see where some of the other posters that didn't are coming from. I buzzed through the first 100-150 pages, but the last 100 or so were a little more of a grind. Can't really put my finger as to why, but nonetheless, I wasn't quite as eager to pick it back up and rip through it by the end. That said, I still did enjoy it a great deal and would recommend it.

Bourne's Day by Day series is awesome. I can't wait for book 3 to come out.

BTW, the Zombie Survival Guide (also by Brooks) really has nothing to do with World War Z. It's not a narrative. It really is a survival guide and frankly much of the book could really be applied in real-life survival situations. I assume he borrowed heavily from real, published survival guides and put a zombie twist to it. I never finished it because it wasn't narrative. It literally reads like a "How To" or "What To Do" book.

I am only about 2/3 through with it and as of right now, I would say it is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. Actually, I am listening to it. I can't wait to get in the truck and listen to more.

Very well done! I hope they make a movie of it!
