2nd viewing tonight; Star Cinema about 85% full for the Friday 715 pm showing; way more kids than the first time I saw it.

Non-SW daughter had to admit she loved the soundtrack.

Being a super nerd, I counted in my head how long the movie goes without real dialogue in the "Grogu's World" part. From the point where Mando says "Goodbye, kid" when the Anzillians ship takes off until the moment where the swamp alien invites Grogu up into his home, 9 minutes and 40 seconds go by. Pretty amazing.

In the Last Jedi the four main male characters are either "bad" Kylo or redeemed by a female. Luke by Rey, Poe by purple admiral, Finn by Rose. It's just stupidly funny.

I think the opening sequence of 2001: A Space Odyssey beat that for length with no words spoken.

Whoa cool!!! I'm SO taking my oldest grandson to this! He'll have just turned 7. Barely younger than I was when I saw it way back then.

High likelihood Backrooms takes #1 spot this weekend. If so that means a Star Wars movie was popular enough to only keep #1 for 5 straight days…

Editor for all 3 Star Wars OT films and Taxi Driver & American Graffiti….jeez wonder why she never worked on anything else…the fact that she had a hand in those films alone should've gotten her into any job she wanted.

Went to see Mando and Grogu in IMAX around lunchtime today. It starts and after a few minutes I lean over to my brother in law and say "is this in 3D?" and he says "I was just about to ask". I pop out the door and sure enough there's 3D glasses outside the entrance. Doubled checked after the show and there is zero mention on the website, in the checkout process, or on our tickets that this was a 3D showing. It was fine but I'd have rather have watched in 2D given the options.

That said, I thought it was a lot of fun. Great action, some fun characters and an interesting look at the Hutts, some funny bits, and overall an enjoyable ride. It did feel a bit like a bigger budget extended version of the show, but that's not a bad thing in my book.

She got $50M in the divorce settlement. Maybe she decided to just take it easy.

She also worked on Taxi Driver and was nominated for a BAFTA as well as Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. She also famously got Spielberg to add the closing scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark with Indy/Marion walking together in Frisco because she told them the audience would need the emotional closure.

She and Lucas found out they couldn't have kids naturally, so they adopted their oldest daughter in 1981. They got divorced in '83 and she decided that being a mom was enough of a career, I think.

Would love know how that is hyperbole. A SW movie ought to be a blockbuster slamdunk that dominates ticket sales for a many weeks. When a movie is released to so little hype, no one cares, and it quickly gets overshadowed by an indie horror flick....ya done ****ed up. That isn't hyperbole.

It's hyperbole because he didn't say what you just said. He said something different. He said (dramatically) Star Wars is dead. Twice.

There are certainly problems. But to say the brand is dead is laughable and a blatant attempt at engagement.

An upcoming Ryan Gosling movie is enough evidence to prove him wrong. And there's probably a half dozen other reasons that I don't feel like listing.

Saw Mando and Grogu and thought it was perfect for my tastes. Lots of great action, the little guy is adorable, and Raddo was a super cool add. Almost like a dad, teenage nephew, and a child trio.

Ok, yeah he's using hyperbole to get his point across. I don't think by saying it is "dead" he means permanently done, but it is pretty dead for now. Compared to the following and hype it had in the early 2000's and leading up to Force Awkens, as of now it is comparatively dead. What's worse, even if future projects are legitimately good, they'll continue to underperformed for a while because of the lingering stench of the Kathleen era. That's what happened to Solo, which was good and deserved better sales and hype.

The 50th anniversary re-release of the original, remastered version of Star Wars: A New Hope (i.e. not the Special Edition) in both standard theaters and IMAX. This will be a massive event and serve as a nice palette cleanser / "reset."

April 1-4, 2027
In Los Angeles, the next Star Wars Celebration, where either the next trilogy will likely/officially be announced, and/or whatever other new project or projects Disney/Lucasfilm has in store. Basically, this will almost assuredly serve as the unofficial kick-off of the post-Kennedy era.

May 28, 2027
The standard/IMAX release of Star Wars: Starfighter, the first post-sequel-trilogy (timeline-wise) Star Wars movie in eight years, starring Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Aaron Pierre, and Mia Goth. In the wake of Project Hail Mary, Gosling is a bonafide blockbuster star now, and this will likely be a big hit. Buzz so far is strong, and rumor is this movie may very well set up the aforementioned next trilogy to follow.

In other words, over the course of the first five months of 2027, my guess is that the bad taste of The Mandalorian and Grogu will have long since subsided and, for the most part, franchise goodwill/momentum will be restored. We shall see...

Anyone have any inside track on what Star Fighter is actually about? I looked a little, doesn't seem like much of anything credible is out there beyond the timeframe and the cast.

No joke, I've seen multiple places state that Gosling's character is tasked with transporting a force sensitive kid to someplace safe for training....in other words another variation of the Mando/Grogu story.

Ha, that's exactly what it is. For better or worse. And the rumor is, he's transporting the kid to Rey, who will be revealed at the end, as having started the new Jedi Order/Academy. But no one knows for sure.

For a bit more potential detail/color, below are some other credible-ish rumors from reddit, all of which, if true, are basic setup/teaser trailer stuff, which I wouldn't consider spoilers myself, but just in case...

- Amy Adams' character is Force-sensitive and, on her deathbed, gives her lightsaber to Flynn Gray, her son. She asks him to seek help from his uncle, played by Ryan Gosling.

- Gosling is a highly skilled former pilot and war hero, haunted by the ghosts of his past. He's found by his nephew (whom he's never met) and the two do not get along well at first.

- Mia Goth's character is a Force-sensitive, lightsaber-wielding mercenary. She hunts Flynn Gray, who is also Force-sensitive. She's looking for an apprentice.

- Matt Smith's character is a powerful and notorious warlord/arms dealer.

EmpireCity's Twitter needs to slow down on the coolaid….

Since TLJ….weve had Solo (lost money), ROS (very likely lost money), ManGrok (lost money)…..other than Mando S1 & S2 and Andor S1 & S2 there's been nothing but product that fans have rejected since TLJ….

To claim that all the terribleness from almost 10 years that will be "fixed" over the span of one year magically because it's the 50 year anniversary and Star Wars is releasing another movie is consuming WAY too much copium….

It's almost as if he's saying….

fig96

I don't think they're saying that?

I don't know that the 50th anniversary moves the needle that much, though I do think a lot of folks are going to see ANH in theaters. But there's a very good chance that Starfighter will do huge numbers, the bigger question is whether or not they're launching something worthwhile from that.

Except he didn't say any of the things you're saying he said.

He's simply saying that the people claiming the franchise is dead will be eating crow and that goodwill will likely return. That's it.

Also, as much as I hate it, The Rise of Skywalker was absolutely profitable. Like, significantly so.

According to Forbes (and other sources as well), the actual production budget AFTER the EU discounts was 489 million…assuming a mass marketing budgeting of 200 million you get 689 million total cost…

If you assume a smaller (and unlikely) 150 million marketing budget you get 639 million total cost….

The thing only grossed a little over a billion worldwide….
Theaters take half of that.

Nope.

Star Wars isn't dead. I agree. Didn't clarify.

Disney Star Wars is. Until they fix it.

There is no chance in hell the production budget was $489M. And $200M in marketing, even for that movie, feels steep. Just FYI, budgets are misreported all the time.

This is the first Star Wars movie that I didn't see on opening day since The Empire Strikes back was released. I didn't see A New Hope for a couple of weeks after it came out until one of my dad's friends told him he needed to take me.

The more recent run of Star Wars movies:
  • Rogue One - I think this might be the best Star Wars movie
  • The Force Awakens - I enjoyed it, it was a rehash of A New Hope, but after the prequels, it wasn't a bad reset
  • Solo - only saw it once in the theater, isn't worth having on in the background when it's on TBS or another channel
  • The Last Jedi - only saw it once in the theater, isn't worth having on in the background when it's on TBS or another channel
  • The Rise of Skywalker - only saw it once in the theater, isn't worth having on in the background when it's on TBS or another channel
The TV side:
  • The Mandolorian - mixed, some really good, some really bad
  • Andor - very good
  • The Acolyte - first few episodes were terrible, wasn't worth the time to see anymore
  • Kenobi - terrible
  • The Book of Boba Fett - only good parts were the flashbacks, Mando portions, otherwise bad
  • The 4 episode Clone Wars finale - excellent
  • The Bad Batch - I enjoyed it
  • Rebels - got really good after season 1
  • Ahsoka - I enjoyed it
  • Haven't watched any of the others
3 really terrible movies in a row, mixed on the TV shows, some very good, some shockingly bad. Overall, the rash of bad movies have basically killed my desire to continue following Star Wars.
