I know it might look that way from the outside, but I've been on both ends of this world, having worked in the entertainment news business as well, and sources are vetted, are often personal friends of reporters, are always reputable, and never low-man-on-totem-pole types. At least when it comes to the four major trades (Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and The Wrap), who rarely ever get information wrong. Not to mention, a huge chunk of these announcements come from either the companies themselves or the agencies repping the actors. To that end, I've been part of announcements that the production companies will send in, but then the final announcement will read something like "We're hearing from sources that [whatever news item is happening]."
In this particular instance, it could still be that Kinberg has a planned trilogy, but that it's a "stand-alone movie" for now, and that they'll greenlight the next one only if this one does well. While Rey could be in it to some degree as well, just not as prominently featured as in her New Jedi Order movie, hence not announcing her yet? My guess is that this particular bit of news came from someone on Gosling's side, and not leaked from Lucasfilm, hence the "conflicting" info (that again, doesn't technically rule out the reporting from November).
My main gripe is that Disney/Lucasfilm is hardly ever in front of these things. They announce movies like once every five years, and then maybe one of those movies actually ends up happening. Meanwhile, reports run rampant on other potential SW movies (like this Kinberg one), and because Lucasfilm can't ever get their **** together, confusion reigns supreme because everyone is just playing telephone. Why Lucasfilm A) can't develop better in secret, B) can't develop better, period, and C) can't beat the press to the punch with clearly-communicated announcements, is beyond me.
