If the deal makes, this would send the project into hyper-drive after two years of development, and make it the next Star Wars movie to go into production.

Seeing as Disney already scrapped the December 18, 2026 Star Wars release date, this would presumably fill the only Star Wars date currently remaining - December 17, 2027. That said, if they're already casting, my guess is it gets pushed upped to summer 2027, if not earlier.

And now they just updated the article...

If a deal makes, the project would continue to fly like the Millennium Falcon, becoming not only Levy's next movie but also the next Star Wars movie to go into production, with cameras potentially rolling this fall.

Yeah, if production is, indeed this fall, then I could easily see a summer 2027 release.

It sounds like it's also meant to be a stand-alone film.

No one knows. We have next to no details. All any knows is that he and his writing partner have been working on it for over a year, and at one point it was *also* rumored to involve Rey (in addition to the other, more prominent Rey-centric movie that keeps getting delayed), but who knows.

At this rate, if we do get a Rey movie it will be almost as much time passed as between 6 and 7

THR claims it's not a Skywalker saga movie:

Quote:

It is unclear when Levy's project is set. Star Wars stories have run the gamut of hundreds of years, detailing the goings-on of a galactic republic-turned-dictatorship-turned-rebellion. It's also unclear if it concerns Jedis and their enemies, The Sith. It is, however, to be unconnected to the so-called Skywalker Saga, the stories centered on well-established and beloved characters Luke Skywalker and his father, Anakin.
Dunno if that means no Rey, though.

The bit you quoted just says it's unconnected, with no "a source told us" type of qualifier...but your point,

Rey pseudo dated Luke's nephew, is granddaughter of Palpatine and took the Skywalker name. If she's in a movie, it's a Skywalker Saga film

I figured, but hopefully you're right.

I originally thought of it in a chronological sense. i.e. any movie between Ep 1 and Ep 9 is "Skywalker Saga" but a Rey post Ep 9 new Jedi order movie would not be a Skywalker Saga movie. Looking at it now, I don't think that's how they use the term.

All indications were that the Rey-centric movie, where she starts a new Jedi Order (to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and was written by Steven Knight before he was either fired or left the project), was almost assuredly meant to be the beginning of a new trilogy, and for all intents and purposed was likely going to be Episode X. However, that movie has since been delayed numerous times and currently has no new writer that we're aware of.

Then, this past November, there was a report from The Hollywood Reporter (who just broke the Gosling news) that included these excerpts...

Quote:

Since the Nov. 7 reveal that Simon Kinberg had signed on to develop and write and produce a new Star Wars trilogy for Lucasfilm and Disney, debate has focused on whether or not it would be a continuation of the so-called nine-film Skywalker Saga, tying it to the legacy of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and storylines first laid out by George Lucas in 1977. The reason for the debate is that the new, hoped-for trilogy would feature Rey in some form or fashion.

Some fans have expressed criticism that Lucasfilm would return to the well to make "episodes," as they are called, beyond the nine movies that comprise the Skywalker story, which had been billed as concluding with 2019's Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker. That film grossed $1.077 billion globally but also wasn't received well by much of the fan base (it received a B+ grade from audiences polled by CinemaScore and a 51 percent critics tally on Rotten Tomatoes).

But Rey, the scavenger turned Jedi played by Daisy Ridley in the last three episode movies, is key to the franchise's next turn. That potentially puts Kinberg's trilogy story development, as early in its conceptual stages as it may be, on a collision course with the Rey stand-alone movie that is actively in the works with director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

That feature, revealed with fanfare in April 2023 at Star Wars Celebration in London, is to star Ridley and could have already been in production were it not for some unanticipated headwinds, with writers rotating around more than R2-D2's chrome dome. A new writer search is underway, so it's unclear when that one would go.

Perhaps that is why Lucasfilm was receptive to Kinberg's multi-story pitch. Anything to move Rey forward. But it does engender rumors in the Star Wars underground of filmmakers jostling for characters. (Ridley, for her part, recently told The Hollywood Reporter, "I feel like the new one/new ones will be so interesting. Time has passed and a lot has changed for me, personally, so it'll be interesting to come back to someone who I know so well, but in such a different moment.")

While insiders dispute the notion that there is a battle for Rey, there definitely is internal deliberation within Lucasfilm as to what do with the heir to Skywalker next. "She is the most valuable cinematic asset, in some ways maybe the only one, Star Wars has right now," one source close to the franchise tells THR. (Pedro Pascal's Mandalorian and the Yoda-like Grogu are Disney+ creations and will have their big-screen power tested with a feature directed by Jon Favreau, releasing in 2026.)

According to sources, Rey is set to play a role in several movies that are being developed, although which ones remains unclear.

But now, just two months later, THR is saying that the "Kinberg trilogy" is actually a "stand-alone movie" with no mention whatsoever of Rey in the Gosling announcement. In other words, once again, as is always the case with this franchise now... who the hell knows what's really going on or what this movie will actually be about. All we know is that it's beat the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy movie to the punch, and at this point I seriously doubt it will ever see the light of day.

I know that these publications work to cultivate sources so they have things to write about, but I wonder if things in Hollywood, and Disney in particular, are getting so big from a personnel standpoint that the sources are nobodies pretending to be more important than they are.

I mean, when you look at credits there are a million names, all the way down to the errand boy for a non speaking extra (exaggeration). I can only imagine how many people work for these massive studios. Getting legit info is probably hard to begin with, then throw in how (what I'll politely call) picky Disney is with Star Wars.

I know it might look that way from the outside, but I've been on both ends of this world, having worked in the entertainment news business as well, and sources are vetted, are often personal friends of reporters, are always reputable, and never low-man-on-totem-pole types. At least when it comes to the four major trades (Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and The Wrap), who rarely ever get information wrong. Not to mention, a huge chunk of these announcements come from either the companies themselves or the agencies repping the actors. To that end, I've been part of announcements that the production companies will send in, but then the final announcement will read something like "We're hearing from sources that [whatever news item is happening]."

In this particular instance, it could still be that Kinberg has a planned trilogy, but that it's a "stand-alone movie" for now, and that they'll greenlight the next one only if this one does well. While Rey could be in it to some degree as well, just not as prominently featured as in her New Jedi Order movie, hence not announcing her yet? My guess is that this particular bit of news came from someone on Gosling's side, and not leaked from Lucasfilm, hence the "conflicting" info (that again, doesn't technically rule out the reporting from November).

My main gripe is that Disney/Lucasfilm is hardly ever in front of these things. They announce movies like once every five years, and then maybe one of those movies actually ends up happening. Meanwhile, reports run rampant on other potential SW movies (like this Kinberg one), and because Lucasfilm can't ever get their **** together, confusion reigns supreme because everyone is just playing telephone. Why Lucasfilm A) can't develop better in secret, B) can't develop better, period, and C) can't beat the press to the punch with clearly-communicated announcements, is beyond me.

From Jeff Sneider tonight...

Quote:

The Fall Guy to the Rescue - Ryan Gosling is in negotiations to star in Shawn Levy's untitled Star Wars movie, which hails from writer Jonathan Tropper. Levy will produce the movie under his 21 Laps banner alongside Kathleen Kennedy of Lucasfilm. I'm told that Levy's movie takes place after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, and is unconnected to the Skywalker Saga, as it's intended to be a standalone entry in the franchise. Production is slated to start in September, by which Netflix will have likely already aired the final season of Stranger Things, which is produced by Levy. I have been saying for weeks/months that Levy's movie was looking like the first Star Wars movie to enter production following The Mandalorian and Grogu, which hits theaters on May 22, 2026. Lucasfilm felt it needed a big movie star to reassert the franchise on the big screen, where box office returns haven't lived up to Disney's high expectations. Gosling, who earned an Oscar nomination for his supporting turn in Barbie, should help in that regard. He'll soon be seen in another movie set in outer space Project Hail Mary, which hails from directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. They were famously fired from Lucasfilm's Han Solo movie, so I guess they didn't warn him about their rocky experience working within the franchise's tight parameters. In any case, this is a coup for Lucasfilm, and likely a smart move for Gosling, as it also allows him to avoid the Marvel machine at least for another few years, anyway.

"She is the most valuable cinematic asset, in some ways maybe the only one, Star Wars has right now," one source close to the franchise tells THR."

This is the most concise statement of the failure of 7-9. The movies generated only one character who has any potential for future stories and it did it so weakly, that there isn't even a clear path forward for her. That is a failure in story telling.

It is kinda amazing to me that Star Wars has generated 12 billion dollars of value for Disney, but from a creative standpoint feels very stagnant and dead in the water.

Especially when you look at what 4-6 generated.

Luke
Leia
Han
Chewbacca
R2/D2
Nobody gives a **** about C-3PO
Lando
Jabba
Vader
Palpatine

These were all marketable, valuable characters that could have their own movies written about them and their motives/origins.

And different people saw themselves in each of these different characters. That's what makes a sci fi movie so good is that even though it's a totally different place and time, the humanistic nature of the story and the characters is still relevant to us the viewers.

It's like 7-9 movies were so focused on promoting Ridley that they didn't think about the eclectic nature of Star Wars fans and how to build charters that relate to their audience.

Poe was a great character that a lot of guys probably wanted to relate to but he gets ***** slapped by Holdo. Guys who think they're men are not going to relate to that.

They killed off Han and Luke.

Finn sort of was relegated to secondary status

Hux's turn seemed unnatural and he's dead

Kylo is dead

Rose was not received well.

BB-8 was a win.

Ridley is all they got and frankly, she doesnt have the charisma to carry this franchise

Even the people who will not admit it here know internally that Disney has wiped it butt with the Star Wars franchise. The billions they put on the balance sheet to appease greedy shareholders is what it's all about.

"Star Wars" is the Skywalker family saga. George Lucas did people no favors by making such a grand franchise name decades ago. I get it, it was about marketing and putting an in-your-face brand out there, but several bad decisions have really neutered this entire franchise.

None of the non-Skywalker storylines has generated mass appeal. Only a few highly devoted truly follow all the ancillary fan fiction offshoots.

They might as well make Rey be a secret Skywalker from Palpatine's own DNA plus the DNA of Leia or Shmi. That level of retcon might be able to convince people to pay money to see more of this convoluted mess.

None of the Disney content remotely affects the outcome of episode 9's ending.

Episode 7 was such a strong start to the new series. Huge success… yes it was a New Hope ripoff but honestly I thought that was a pretty smart formula.

Episode 7 created many different cool characters we wanted to see much more of… Rey, Finn, Poe, Kylo, Snoke, and Maz. The theories of who Rey could be were fun (I was of the belief she would be tied to Obi Wan due to his voice being in her flashbacks as both Ewan/Alex Guiness)

Episodes 8 killed that some of that hype train with the Finn revert to sidekick, Poe being unlikable, Snoke dying and then episode 9 just fell off the cliff in terms of any type of excitement moving forward.

But I'll stand by the fact that I think episode 7 did everything it needed to in order to kickstart what could have been a great trilogy.

And boy did they crash and burn the landing on 8…..

If Gosling is attached to a Star Wars film that takes place after IX, then Rey is likely out of the picture, figuratively and literally. He's a mega star and just made her irrelevant especially after this much time has passed.

And I'm great with that because I was never a big fan of her character in the first place. Not necessarily her fault; they need to move on from the taint of the ST and how they handled her character.

That's exactly how I felt. Far from a perfect movie but such a fun time plus fun building theories afterwards. Episode 8 left me feeling just empty/apathetic leaving the theaters and then episode 9 had me thinking they let a 12 year old write the script.

Episode 8 left me turning off the movie during the casino planet scene and not going back to finish it or to see Episode 9.

From Jeff Sneider, with some added detail for the Rey movie, while also echoing what I was saying earlier, that the Gosling movie could easily move up to summer 2027...

Quote:

A few weeks ago, when Lucasfilm hired Simon Kinberg to write a new Star Wars trilogy, a lot of people figured the news would be the nail in the coffin for Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's Star Wars movie, but to the contrary, I'd heard that Lucasfilm had just hired a new writer on the project. I wasn't able to ascertain their identity, but I'd heard they were an older, white man, and not a huge name or anything, but a respectable, dependable one. Sure enough, THR reported today that George Nolfi (The Bourne Ultimatum) has come on to rewrite New Jedi Order, which is expected to feature Daisy Ridley's Rey in a mentor-like capacity roughly 15 years after the events of 2019's The Rise of Skywalker. I think you can expect the film's protagonist to be a young man somewhere between the ages of 16 and 22, who will be training to be a Jedi. Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were the original writers on the project before being replaced by Steven Knight. New Jedi Order was once being eyed to follow The Mandalorian and Grogu, but as my sources have been saying for months, it sounds like Shawn Levy's movie will be next up - especially now that Ryan Gosling is in negotiations to star. Don't be surprised if that film debuts in May 2027 timed to the 50th anniversary of the original Star Wars. In addition to The Bourne Ultimatum, Nolfi also worked with Matt Damonon Ocean's 12 and The Adjustment Bureau. More recently, he directed the Anthony Mackie movies The Banker and Elevation.

kinda….but yeah still had cameos in it….

This is supposed to be a story about a galactic war….theres plenty of stories and characters to write about from the perspective of the empire and the rebels that don't revolve around Luke, Leia, Han, r2, C-3PO, chewy, Vader, Palps, or the other characters we've seen….

Or that don't revolve around tatooine or yavin 4…..

Basically what we could/should have gotten with rogue squadron….
