Can someone explain the motive behind the drummer killing the officer? Why was the drummer working alongside the colonial who was having after hours relations with the officer?

So I don't believe it was the drummer who killed him, but the colonial. As far as the motive, I believe that's what Major Rogers (and us) are trying to nail down. And the drummer and colonial we're working with the officer, and the "love letter" was simply a secret way to pass coded messages.

Roger Robert referred to the colonial as a bugger and a sodomite. The colonial said that he thought their affair had been exposed during the bar fight.

Ah, I think I missed a thing or two then.

It sounded like Roger said "He's lower than a sodomite...a spy," and I assumed that was more comparative speaking than an actually commentary on his previous actions, and his new role making him even lower.

If that's the case, and it sounds like it is, then I guess the love letter wasn't simply a way to hide a message, but indeed both a love letter and a hidden message?

That is correct.
However, Robert the Bruce is going to use the threat of blaming him to make him spy.

Right. I took it that the colonial and captn were butt buddies, the colonial killed the captn, but instead of killing the colonial after finding out, Robert the Bruce wants to use the butt buddy killer news as leverage to make the colonial spy for him because he's suspicious of what is going down in the town. So Robert the Bruce made drummer boy a patsy and killed him instead.

This is how I took it. Great show so far.

watched the first 2 episodes last night and really enjoyed this.
is this a one-off - are they planning to tell the story in 12-13 episodes? seems like it would be hard to take it beyond 2 seasons without making it more about the relationships than the war.

I hope they keep the series short.
My experience with period pieces or shows with complicated and expensive sets is that they cheapen the quality of the production as the show goes on. It makes sense, once you have already set the stage, you focus on the plot and characters.
Turn however is great for me because of the sets and production and not just the plot and characters.

Watched all three episodes this week and have enjoyed the show so far. I agree the show seems like it will have a short 1-2 season run, as we are already well into the war.

Any of you history buffs know if they really did that with the grave markers?

The grave marker thing was stupid, I want to like this series but it is losing me real quick with an episode devoted to tearing up gravestones, nothing like that ever happened. a better offering would be for one of the farmers to give up their stonewall. I do like that they have real characters like John Andre and Charles Lee but they seem to be playing fast and loose with the history-- if you know what I mean.

Pretty "meh" so far in my book. Haven't seen last night's ratings, but it's on a relatively poor trajectory ratings-wise through 3 weeks.

i was concerned about the ratings when i looked this morning and it wasn't on first page. This shows has a ton of potential and hope it is successful, but last night was pretty dull.

It's 1776, there's 5 more years of war that they can cover.

According to this, the Brits did use the gravestones:

I thought it was common knowledge that the Brits used gravestones for fences and fortifications.

Others have done it as well for building walls, there is a really good example in a cemetary in Savannah.

Wonder how your opinion of the episode changes now that it's been shown to be historically accurate.

My only issue with the show so far is the familial tension just seems a little contrived and soap opera-ish. The husband-wife-love triangle drama is the worst as they built this one-dimensional wife from the outset, but the father-son is a little weak too.

My opinion doesn't change, what I found ahistorical was the magistrate having to make a choice on tombstones and convincing the people to volunteer their family stones. That is what never happened and seemed silly. As I said, they should have offered up a random stone wall versus turmoil over who's stones to use.

The wife is trying to make an early run at Betty Draper's "Worst Wife on AMC" title.

Way to hang on to that secret for all of 12 hours.

I think that they are doing a good job as far as trying to make it historically accurate and educating. The downside to that is that it's going to lose it's appeal to those that aren't history dorks like I am.

I fail to see how asking the town for pieces of their stone walls would have been interesting at all to watch.

That's right, if the British wanted grave markers they took them, not create this dumb melodramatic Sophie's Choice scenario among Loyalists.

Doesn't the portrayal of Charles Lee bother you if you guys are history dorks? Captured in a sexual situation versus the reality of eating supper and then being much more of a British agent than the historical record support. We can save the portrayal of John Andre for later.

Good episode. I read that when Washington entered a room, he exuded badassery. This show did a good job of presenting that.

I thought they did a poor job with Trenton and Princeton. It seemed like they assumed the casual viewer would understand what happened and pretty much moved on without going to far into it.

I imagine they wanted to save money. Battle scenes are pricey. Maybe having the scene would attract word of mouth and more viewers? Probably. But that decision was made long ago. Maybe they are saving their money for later in the season.

I was disappointed that they didn't even really discuss how significant the crossing was. Had Washington either not done that or had it failed, the Revolution probably would have been lost in the Spring of 1777. I'm enjoying this show, but I'm afraid that due to it's writing, only history nerds are going to tune in.
aTmAg

They didn't know the significance yet. It was a small battle that didn't mean much militarily. It wasn't until later that they realized that it basically saved the revolution.
