Not a history nerd at all, while I do remeber some things from my American history class, I was drawn to the show because I like spy shows. One of the reasons why I like the Americans on fx.

Washington did. The army was constantly retreating, had been pushed out of New York, was low on supplies and ammo, and was faced with a mass reduction due to both enlistments being up and morale being low. He needed a bold move and took it.

I think that pre and post episode historical explanations, like they did in "Band of Brothers" would have been a good idea.

Washington himself didn't know that it basically saved the revolution. That was only realized in hindsight. He was happy to win a battle, and hoped it would save his army from disbanding, but things were still precarious for him. Besides, you expect Washington to do somersaults or something? The first thing he did was ask about Abraham. Clearly he was very thankful.

That's not what I said, but if that's the way you choose to reply on this thread, I'll save my discussion for others.

Band of brothers didn't do a historical explanation pre and post episode. They had the real guys talk about their personal experiences. They talked about the guys they had lost and stuff like that. If AMC brang on some historian before each episode, everybody would change the channel immediately. This isn't the history channel.

I'm not talking about the interviews with regards to the endings of Band of Brothers, I'm talking about the written epilogues. If they did that and/or had prologues, they could add historical context to what was seen during the episode.

Oh.. yeah that would be good. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Or you have The Talking Turned, where we can get our ass whipped with a history lesson from Chris Hardwick each week.

They could have done a little better job explaining what happened at Trenton and Princeton or somehow show that many remained in the army afterwards. Just give a little insight to what happened.

I think this show requires more patience than network shows where most of the plot line is wrapped up in the episode. The Trenton/Princeton episode will be one that they keep referring back to for the next couple. (I guess. I haven't seen a synopsis on the next episodes.) Yes, a battle scene would have been cool, but that is expensive and this is a spy show, not an action show. The important parts of that episode is that the spy ring is growing from the original three, Abe is lost some moral high ground, and Washington now has a use for this intelligence.

As for the gravestone episode, the gravestones served the purpose of the plot of an episode, but more imnportantly it fueled Abe's anger at the British and further isolated him from his wife. He knows he can't let her find out about his spying, she won't keep the secret.

So I guess I missed something. At the beginning, they shows Abraham get caught with the egg and then shot. (That seems bad). I assumed they were doing a flash forward of what was about to happen. Yet in that same scene, they show the other spy with the pinky ring. Later that dude is stabbed in the neck. So what is that all about? Was Abraham getting shot thing a dream or what?

the egg scene was a scenario being played out on how to exchage information. the next scene was the scribe crossing it out and throwing it away.

I like how Washington tied in Nathan Hale to the story. He claimed he had known Brewster and Talmadge from Yale. Is this just to bring his name up, or was that true?

According to Wikipedia, Hale and Tallmadge were in fact classmates at Yale.

still really enjoying this show. i usually feel that period pieces before ww2 feel campy or inauthentic, but i really love the uniforms. the famous british redcoats and the vibrant blue of the colonials.
kind of weird seeing the guy playing the british major at setauket pull double duty on game of thrones.

random - i was at dinner with coworkers recently when one guy mentioned that he had co-written a screenplay and book a few years ago on this specific aspect of the rev war. he was pretty pissed that this version had been turned into a "successful" tv show as it prety much ended his dreams.

I thought this episode was really good. I feel like the momentum has really been picking up. I'm starting to like Simcoe as much as I did King Joffrey.

I'm still in.
I keep watching the quality of the sets and they still seem to put a good bit of effort in the production with costumes and extras.

Agreed. This show does a good job of projecting a sense of awe regarding Washington. I've watched several shows regarding Washington, and usually they seem to portray him more down to earth. This show is doing it right. I got a goose bump or two when Abraham was merely told that Washington picked his alias.

I haven't read the entire thread, just curious if anyone knew or had also wondered if the songs in the show are new recordings based off of period songs?

Also, did anyone else catch Abraham singing his song to the tune of the Star-Spangled Banner. I'd heard it was based off of an old tavern song, but didn't realize it was so bawdy.

Haven't seen much of the show but glad it is being discussed. My cousin is playing Eastin who didn't come in until recently and only had a couple of lines but he is excited.

Excellent first season. Thankfully AMC knows good shows from bad and they should get another season or 2. I see this show as only lasting 3 or 4 seasons anyway. The revolutionary war didn't last forever, of course.

It lasted until 1781. So that's about 5 more years.
