Did you listened to hip-hop in the 90s when the Biggie-Tupac/East-West coast beef was going on?

If so, what artist and/or region did you side with?

I was in NJ so I was an east coast guy, but Tupac was still a favorite. Hit Em Up

I was up north as well (Philly). It was Biggie/coast all day. If you wanted to listen to Tupac, you did so while no one else was around.

I was in California then Oregon, so west coast. Though we had Dre and Snoop and Ice Cube, too, so there was some variety.

I over heard some younger high school kids discussing if they listen to "90's rap"
It's almost like it is a genre of music now. Like 70's rock or 80's music. I find that strange for some reason. I just think of it as rap. The "rap" today is just not good.

I'd say initially, I was all about the west coast sound (Chronic / 2001) are bangers. and Tupac has some great stuff.

As I've expanded my listening, I find myself liking east coast style more (Wutang and their subsequent individual albums, biggie, jay).

I agree Btron. Today's rap is mostly terrible. Kendrick is really on another level from a story telling and word play standpoint, but I've also been listening to some other stuff I would consider 'grimy'. (earl sweatshirt's doris, for example). Schoolboy Q is also pretty good

Biggie for sure. Music and lyrics were better.

Pac had better lyrics and flow imo, although they were both good.

Tupac was very successful with white suburbanites no doubt, but I think a lot of people were put off by his borderline anti-white, black power stuff.

For the mid to late 20's white person crowd(me), it was all about who you began listening to first, IMO.

I have a friend who swears by Pac. We each love both and respect them as 2 of the best ever, but we each have different opinions, and I'm pretty sure it is only because I got into Biggie seriously before I got into Pac, and him vice-versa.

Fun story. What Stage at Bonnaroo plays music in between sets, and people just go lay down in the grass out there because it's the best grass spot on the farm. We were waiting for Arcade Fire a handful of years back and they always play either goofy or coordinated stuff up there during down time.

They play Who Shot Ya? and you hear some clapping and some talk. Then they play Hit Em Up and you hear some clapping and talking. Then they finish with Runnin' and everyone laying in the grass gives a big applause. Random, funny little sequence. An ultimate white person rap opinion bro-down but with a happy ending.

Ha, I know... I figured a Pac disciple would lecture me though if I didn't soften it up a bit.

Nearly 40 years old. Preferred west over east overall, but Biggie over Tupac.

im just a know nothing millennial. But I have done my due diligence. 90s and 80s hip hop and rap are mine and most other's preferred styles, the golden age of hip hop.

I love pac. Straight up west coast microphone killer. Few can deliver a rhyme like he could. And his rhyming scheme has been studied by literary scholars. But IMHO, nothing compares to how biggie weaves his rhymes and metaphors, all with that staccato lisp. All you need to hear to know about biggie is the where Brooklyn at freestyle.

Biggie gets my nod. But I have such a high level respect for what they both mean to hip hop.

My older brother was a big 2 Pac fan when he was in high school. He'd pick me up from elementary in his crappy dodge Daytona with a Bass Cannon in the back and we'd park at Sonic, blasting Pac. Picture me Rollin

I'm from the West, so Pac. But I did listen to some Biggie. I like some of his stuff, but IMO he doesn't come close to even sniffing 2Pac's jock.

Tupac was heavy into drama, art school and backup dancing. So the glee fans are all about him. Biggie was more real imo. Both great rappers but neither could touch Z-Ro on "Look What You Did To Me" or a few of his other early efforts when he was still hungry and trying to make it. I enjoy listening to both biggie and Pac, even though I know Pac's whole shtick was a facade and partly a result of his pent up rage and frustration with being a closet homosexual.

I don't think I was into rap enough to care about the whole east/west thing. If I liked your song then I was going to listen to it no matter where you chose to call home.

Don't care about the east coast - west coast rivalry thing. I think Biggie is the better rapper and Tupac is the better artist.

There was also the intracoast West Coast feud -- Eazy E/Mc Ren/Bone Thugs vs Death Row. Of course Bone Thugs wasn't from Cali but still seemed keen on throwing down with Death Row.

I liked the West coast stuff but when I heard ATLiens that is when things really changed. At that point on and to this day I have only been interested in Southern and Texas rap. Though I do alpreciate Biggie, Wutang, early Jay Z -- just never identified with that sort of message.
