Great movie.

Spoilers»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

I liked seeing Arquettes weight fluctuation.

Funny that the only decent guy she married was the dad.

My step son just graduated from high school and I have been with him the whole duration of that movie.

Glad I am not any of Mason's step dad's and wished his dad was more like Ethan Hawke.

I rolled when he got a bible and his step grandma pointed out the red Jesus text. I got one just like that at that age, and the person pointed out the Jesus text. Of course that was in the 80s.

I get that filming over 12 years made the movie. But why couldn't it be an awesome movie on its own AND have been filmed over 12 years? I don't think anyone would say it was a great or interesting story if it wasn't filmed over 12 years. Decent? Sure. But 99%? No. I understand if you say you can't separate the story and the filming...but this would be true even if the story was better/more interesting.

I just feel like there is a ton of group think going on with this movie, with critics and the regular audience. People hear it's the best rated movie of all time, so they think something is wrong with them if they didn't love it.

This doesn't make sense. I'm trying to understand what you mean by this.

The movie is great because it's about how Mason and his family changed over the course of 12 years. So what do you mean by being awesome on its own? Telling the whole story in 4 years instead?

And if by that you mean they should've added more big, dramatic moments, that's one of the things I loved about the movie. They avoided the obvious cliches like first kisses, first girlfriends, losing virginity, etc. I like that it's made up of the smaller moments, just like life is.

No I didn't want some huge dramatic moments or some stupid cheesy loveline. Just thought there could be a little more umph to the story at some point in the 165 minutes.

I understand why most people liked it bc it's just a representation of life and it was beautifully shot. I just don't understand how everyone likes it and there isn't a review out there that says its "good"...every single review is "fantastic." I understand why most people like it...just wouldn't think it would be everyone's favorite movie (especially younger people who haven't had kids yet). That's why it seems like there is at least a little group think going on.

I'm 26 with no kids and I loved the movie because of how much I related to a lot of moments in the movie. It was 8 years ago that I left for college but it still feels recent to me.

I saw it without seeing a preview, without reading a critic review, but just a vague idea of what the movie was about.

I thought it was fantastic(and I too am 27 with no kids).

Linklater captures moments of lived that are reflective for every generation.

I read where his daughter during one of the breaks said she wanted him to kill off her character because it wasnt fun anymore and didnt want to be in it.

Linklater is a genius... I thought Boyhood was about nothing, and about EVERYTHING at the same time. Much in the same way Dazed and Confused was.

Saw the movie with kids and the ex and it appealed to both my kids (14 and 19) and to the parents. I thought many of the supporting actors were terrific--especially the first stepfather and the HS journalism teacher.

***Spoiler***

Hawke got a lot of choice scenes, where he talked to the kids about current events or about sex, but it was a telling moment where he offered cash for the grad party and opened up his empty wallet. Arquette was great but it seemed that her scenes revolved around discipline and disputes. Since real parenting works out that way amongst the divorced, then I give both actors and director a lot of credit.

My step sons dad showed up at 3:15 to his graduation party that started at 2:00 and left at 3:35.

And didnt give him a graduation present.

This movie was great.

You get to see kids grow up in tv shows, but never in a movies.

I'm late to this thread but I agree with this sentiment. I really enjoyed it but I don't think the final product comes close to the raves the movie got.

And Slacker. And the Before series. Not everything has to be marked by a title card a la Tarantino. Ironically, what makes Linklater's movies so good is also the same thing that makes Tarantino's movies good: quality dialogue.

Saw it last night. Pretty excellent. Shows ups and downs of both parents and kids through the years. Nobody is perfect but at least they all try - or at least they think they're trying. Lots of fantastic dialogue that mimicked conversations I've had. Thumbs up.

I was excited to see it for the 12 years part of it, but once it got started I never even thought about that aspect. The stories and characters were what made the movie amazing.

Wife and I both loved it for many reasons. One that I don't think has been mentioned yet is that it never really went over-the-top on any aspect of the movie like so many dramas do nowadays. For example, the abusive nature of the x-husbands was there, but never went to a crazy extreme. Also, the kid was artistic, but wasn't homosexual or militantly liberal, etc. (and thank goodness he didn't end up at tu). Plus, I think this movie would be a great conversation starter for parents and their teenage kids. Loved it.

One questions I have though, what University did he attend at the end that would be that close to Big Bend? UTEP?

My assumption is that he ended up at Sul Ross State in Alpine. That would seem to be the closest university to Big Bend.

I don't remember the specifics, but I too thought it was either Sul Ross or WT and then they went hiking in Palo Duro.

I thought the movie was good, but I did not think it was the greatest movie EVAR! Or anything like that.

Most of my enjoyment came from the "time capsule" aspect of story-telling and trying to figure out where they were shooting.

I know the movie was trying to be "humble" and trying to understate the "moments", but sometimes I thought it seemed almost desperate to be humble and missed some opportunities...at least with Mason.

As for Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, they both did an outstanding job and their characters did develop in a fantastic way.

Oh, and the same girl that wrote the note to Mason about his hair is the same girl at the end. That was kinda awesome.

When he was in like 6th or 7th grade he got a note from a girl that liked his hair, I believe.

If that's the same girl he's sitting with in Big Bend at the end, that's pretty cool.

No plot, nothing big happened at the end.

It didn't fit into what you think is a quality movie. In fact, that movie would've gotten an F in script writing.

But it was an entertaining story of a family centered on one character as he grew up that broke all the rules of filmmaking.

But because you don't, like it doesn't mean it's not a great film.
