So can anyone here tell me the plot of their lives? What was the storyline and climax? What was impactful about the ending?

Easy.

Plot: Life is hard
Storyline: The kids learn how to make the most out of any situation.
Climax: Kid leaving in his blue truck for school and the conversation with his mom on the way out the door.
Impactfulness of the ending: You, yourself, go and enjoy the up and down ride that is life.

I laughed my ass off when I realized that the gas station attendant (when he was cashing the check) was the same one who sold Mitch beer in Dazed and Confused.

That alone made the movie worth it.

Amazing movie. Just as much about Parenthood as Boyhood. I was not expecting this kind of emotional impact from this film. I'll be thinking about it for days to come.

Totally missed that. In fact, I don't remember him cashing a check

Wow, finally got around to seeing it, and, as always, Linklater delivers a beautifully crafted story that perfectly encapsulates the human condition. Absolute masterpiece. I put it right up there with his 'Before' trilogy for my all-time favorite movies. I think my personal favorite part was the birds and the bees talk in the bowling alley. That scene just felt so organic. It was Linklater and Ethan Hawke at their best. I almost wish I was older and with children so that I could fully appreciate the feelings that Linklater was trying to convey. Also, I thought the acting from the parents was top notch. As always, Ethan Hawke demonstrates his amazing ability to make you feel like you are just sitting down having a beer with your best friend, and I thought Arquette did an absolutely phenomenal job.

As someone else mentioned, I really hope there is a 'Manhood' film in 10 years. I would definitely not put this past Linklater to do.

Really?! 99% on Rotten Tomatoes?

The way they presented the story was cool, but for the love of god, make the main character/plot interesting. He's an apathetic loner who lost his hot girlfriend to a lacrosse player. How interesting! Oh, but then he meets another hot girl at the end who will probably end up leaving him for a better-looking dude too.

Yeah the ending kinda annoyed me. Mainly because something like that would have NEVER happened to me in college.

"Oh hey man, wanna go hiking in Big Bend? Here's my girl friend...want a pot brownie? Oh by the way, here's her dime piece roommate who's already flirting with you even though you're an average looking dude."

Is that confirmed? The credits listed the actors in order of appearance and "Nicole" wasn't listed until the end.

Enjoyed it a lot. Still thinking about it, not exactly sure why.
A bit long but deeply moving to me, and well worth the time.

You missed a lot of opportunities then. I don't mean this to come off as playerish, but I found similar situations at A&M and slightly after were fairly frequent. You go hang out with friends of friends, attractive female is in group, and the flirt commences.

As for the movie itself, saw if last week and am still thinking about it. I kind of want to watch it with my mom over Christmas, but I'm worried she'll be an emotional wreck the whole time.

Saw it last night and hated it. There were a handful of good scenes (most of them involving Ethan Hawke), but I couldn't wait for the movie to end. Way overrated. Without the gimmick of a 12-year filming schedule, there's nothing remarkable about this at all.

Just got back from seeing this movie.

It is a good, not great, movie. The best features of it are that you really get to know the characters and the dialogue is very much like eavesdropping on real conversations. The acting is excellent throughout, with the unfortunate exception of the main character, who becomes pretty flat and monotonous once he hits high school.

As someone said earlier, the movie is as much about the parents as it is about "boyhood."

Two scenes stood out for me. First, the scene later in the movie when Mason's mother has married the veteran and his father and new wife and son have come to pick up Mason and Sam. There is a sense of forgiveness and healing among all the separate factions which is very nice to see, although, as we learn, it does not last.

But the best scene for me was his high school graduation party. It perfectly captured Mason's awkwardness at such a fuss being made over him and the pride his parents have, and also did a fine job of showing the still-awkward relationship between Mason's parents.

This did not spoil the movie for me, but I do want to point out that there are three scenes that are explicitly left-wing politics: Ethan's father launches into a rant against GWB and the Iraq War; Ethan's dad, Mason, and Sam are putting Obama signs in people's yards, and the person who objects has a Confederate flag in his carport (opponents of Obama, as we all know, are racists!); and much later the vet says that the war was "all about oil." It's just so tiresome.......

The casual drug use of magic mushrooms at the end was a bit jarring, too.

It's worth seeing.

Loved this movie. Want it to win Best Picture (in the admittedly weakest field I can remember). Film did exactly what is set out to do- depict moments/snapshots on a life journey. That's the story-Life. I love "coming of age" films, and this is now the gold standard in that genre.

It was perfectly poignant- maybe I was overly sentimental because I had to pause halfway through for bath time for my newborn son, and he's the reason I finally caught this at home on DVD instead of months ago in the theatre as I would have in a former era. Regardless, well done and it deserves all the credit in the world for originality and innovation.

Listened to a Linkletter on the WTF podcast with Mark Marron. Linkletter says that the first scene and last scene were the only ones he had planned when he started shooting.

And the story is very autobiogrpahal, as his mom taught at Sam and his dad was in insurance, and had several husbands.

I purchased "Boyhood" on iTunes over the weekend. To me, the movie was little more than a reimagining of "Dazed and Confused" set in modern times with the gimmick of having 12 years of home video footage of the actors filming some scenes together before they got to graduation day.

That being said........... "Dazed and Confused" is one of my favorite movies of all time. The fact that "Boyhood" takes that movie and adds something to it is incredible. So yes, I really enjoyed the movie a lot. I wasn't as blown away as I was hoping, but my expectations for this movie were beyond unrealistic. I'm very glad I bought it, and I can see myself watching it a dozen more times over the years.

I live in Texas. I'm familiar with most of the locations in the movie, and I've got kids close enough in age to Sam and Mason. As far as I'm concerned, Linklater did me a huge favor by making a movie that I can watch for the rest of my life to remember the years from 2002ish - 2013ish.

If I was an athiest liberal, I would stop taking home videos, and just show this to the grandparents at Christmas time.

Great, great movie.

Some movies are great due to cinematography, or plot twists, or incredible acting - I thought this movie was great due to the feelings it evoked and the introspection about my own life that followed. Everyone has been a kid and most are or will be a parent, so it's what the movie made you remember and think about as much as purely what is seen on the screen or heard from the characters. At least for me anyway.

You know what I loved about this movie? No movie cliches.

Nothing horrible happens.

Dad may have been horrible husband to his first wife, but he was a great dad to his kids. It was sad how his little brother got to have his awesome dad fulltime and he had to put up with the drunks and *******s.

It was very well done and I loved it.

Linkletter said that during the premier he realized that the audience thought something was going to happen and almost started laughing. Same when he was driving and looking at the phone.

He said life is full of things we do that are stupid, but only in movies does somerhing bad happen every time.

I told my wife they were going to wreck in the cell phone / blue truck scene. That's when I gained a new level of appreciation for the movie. No wreck.
