If you're a fan of Linklater and the movie, I highly recommend the interview.

Just watched this last night, and I agree that it was great because of the feelings it evokes. It's interesting to hear that Linklater had only originally planned the first and last scenes, as the entire movie is summed up by the last line about how you don't seize the moment but that the moment seizes you. The plot/storyline was just that, how the moments shown seized him and influenced him, slightly or greatly.

Nothing horrible happens.
In the theater I was at, everyone thought something horrible was gonna happen in the empty house when they're throwing the knives or whatever. I did too.

Good point. It's what made Chef so good and refrrefreshing.

That said - did you miss the part where the first step dad was beating the mom? Pretty horrible.

ttt for the Netflix release - has been available for a few weeks now. Finally watched it last night and read through this thread. Outstanding.

the sequence most memorable and emotional was from the bowling alley sex talk scene through the move to San Marcos and seeing the mom having the successful job and then the dad picking them up with the new stable family. At that point you know they've made it out of the struggle.

Then I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop like a car crash or cancer diagnosis. Or at the beginning when Ethan hawke first shows up you're expecting the typical long narrative of him eventually ****ing things up completely as the kids lose all respect for him and go back to the mom full time. But eventually you realize none of that is happening.

My next favorite sequence the Austin weekend trip. I related to that the most remembering visiting A&M with my girlfriend for a weekend as high school seniors with the whole world in front of us and doing anything to find an excuse to spend the night alone in a room together.

Overall the acting outside of Ethan hawke ranged from pretty bad to cringeworthy. That's ok though. I mostly enjoyed all the familiar texas scenery.

It's on TMC this week; finally watched (most of it). Never heard anyone mention how perfectly this fit as a sequel to Reality Bites, which was on another channel at the same time.

This movie hit me more emotionally than any movie I have ever seen. At the end I felt like a member of the family and got kinda choked up when the boy was graduating and moving on to college like I was an Uncle or something.

Impossible for me to think of this movie and not have that song pop into my head instantly.

I liked it a lot, too. Seems to me it doesn't get enough credit for how good it is.

Whatever happened to the sequel? Did they give up on it? I know the actors were meeting up every year with Linklater to bring him up to speed on what they weee doing with their lives and he was going to use some of that in the new story.

I found this movie, particularly the horrible, split-family dynamic, really depressing.

I appreciated the novelty of it, but not sure I could watch that again.

That family dynamic is depressing, but I was struck by how resilient the kids were. When the story ended, I felt like they were going to be okay. The ending had an optimistic feel to it.

The mom had a lot to do with this.

The dad finally growing up and becoming a responsible father was also refreshing. He was a terrible dad and husband and his failures put his family through a lot of hardship but eventually he found himself and was able to provide guidance and support before it was too late. It's funny how he couldn't be any squarer than he was in the end, selling insurance and married to a Holy Roller.

Cool premise and amazing dedication to pull it off, but made about the wrong family. Wish I could see this done with people I'm actually rooting for.
