The below is such a great point. More than anything about those first few years of the MCU, I remember being so stoked for certain characters to finally meet and interact. Yes, it helped that we knew it was all eventually leading to Thanos, and that the movies felt more connected in general than they do now. But man, I just remember being on the edge of my seat thinking, for instance, how is Tony going to react to so-and-so? Or what will be the thing that finally gets these characters on the same page?

Now? There is absolutely none of that. Forget the overall aimlessness of the plots of phases four and five, there is ZERO anticipation of characters that we care about individually finally meeting each other, teaming up, clashing, etc. Hopefully that changes with the introductions of the Fantastic Four, Blade, etc, and heck, even Deadpool. Just anything that injects some new life into the franchise and ignites that spark of seeing/anticipating characters all eventually interacting...

Idk about you, but I'm pretty excited about the possibility of Harrison Ford, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Florence Pugh sharing a scene or two in Thunderbolts.

But generally, yes, I agree with this.

A small group of women who recognized the Creed III star during the altercation, hugged him, and took a selfie with him in the midst of it.

You know facts don't really matter anymore. Tons of people still think Kavanaugh assaulted that woman even though she wasn't even at the party where she said it happened.

Although outside of Texags, I'm not sure I've even seen anything about the Majors thing so don't know what the public opinion is of it.

Fair points. Crossovers have always been my favorite thing. I don't know if I was ever more excited for a movie than I was for Civil War. It does feel like a lot of the connective potential has been wasted lately, with things like only having 5 min of Guardians in Thor 4.

It kinda feels like Phase 2, where everyone loved Avengers and yet the first few films were like everyone went back to their little corners and didn't interact anymore. Thankfully Winter Soldier kept Nick Fury and Black Widow around - a great decision for many reasons.

Going from memory:
Crossovers: WandaVision (Darcy, Woo and Monica), Falcon & Winter Soldier (the two leads, plus Wakandans, Rhodey cameo), Hawkeye (Yelena), She-Hulk (Wong, Daredevil, Hulk), Spider-Man NWH (Dr Strange), Doctor Strange 2 (Wanda), Thor 4 (Guardians for 5 minutes),

Isolated / no crossovers: Loki, Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night, Black Panther 2, Black Widow, Shang-Chi (a Wong cameo doesn't count), Eternals, Ms Marvel, Guardians Christmas, Quantumania, Guardians 3


Varying degrees of success there. Doctor Strange has the best and most organic crossovers so far (in NWH and Multiverse of Madness with Wanda). Yelena was good in a little bit if Hawkeye. I'd say the rest were glorified cameos - nothing really like Black Widow in the Winter Soldier.

Here's hoping The Marvels and Thunderbolts can actually take advantage of being in the MCU, where those other 11 shows/films did not. I've said it before but it's still crazy to me that Shang-Chi was a critical and commercial success and yet we have no idea when we'll see him again. Captain America made his way in front of audiences in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019. Audiences aren't going to connect with any one character when they go 5 years in between substantial appearances.

And this is why "cancel culture" is so evil. We have a nation built upon the rule of law. There is a known system for handling this kind of thing, and for the most part it works.

I'm not saying that I know every word of this is true. Far from it, actually, as I know nothing about this other than what I've read here. There is a letter alleging something that, if actually shown on video, seems like a slam dunk against the accuser. Yet Majors has already been "convicted" because of this insidious "cancel culture". He will get his day in court. If the accuser can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he beat the crap out of her, then he will suffer whatever the consequences of that will be. Until then, he is innocent (until proven guilty).

Like you said, who knows how true it is, either way. I don't think the cancel culture hoax stuff stops until the accusers can be charged with the same level crime they are accusing someone else of if it turns out they were making it up.

Basically, I think defamation laws should have a special exception where if you can prove someone was intentionally lying about a crime you committed to the police, then they should be charged with defamation with the penalty the same as the accusation.

Would still be very hard to prove, especially with public figures.

But defamation is much easier to charge when you are a normal citizen, so hopefully it would at least kill that.

obviously there was a lot of stuff that went right in that first phase, but those initial casting choices may have been the biggest factor. seeing that picture reminds me of how just a few years earlier, we'd have never guessed a washed out and forgotten RDJ, the guy from Not Another Teen Movie and Captain Kirk's dead dad who we saw for 10 minutes would be front-lining an entire cinematic universe.

Just for conversation, and to jog my memory, how many of our current "earth bound" heroes had interactions with Loki? Dr Strange considered him a threat/villain in Ragnarok. That was the last time he was on Earth before Thanos killed him. Now, we have *new* Loki, who I guess is now good, but not sure Ant-Man, Falcon, or Strange would accept that right away. That iteration of Loki is just a few months (maybe a couple years) from trying to take over Earth...but I don't even know how many of the other heroes know it.

Then again, b/c of the timeline stuff...how likely is it that current Loki gets into the prime timeline to interact with any of them?

I think people also need to realize that it's not 17 years ago and things change and what people want to see changes. I think a lot of people are just kind of sick of comic book movies in general. The strange thing isn't that the MCU has fallen off, but that the MCU was successful to begin with.

This sounds real MCU-fanboy but superhero fatigue probably wouldn't be so bad if, on top of Phase 4, DC and Sony weren't stinking things up left and right. Anyone else see the new Kraven the Hunter trailer?

Y'all are kind of making my point. Regardless of whether 5 good-ish DCEU movies rank higher than the 5 worst MCU movies, there's still 8 other DCEU films of varying quality, plus all the Sony Spidey-less villain films, and every other Fox Marvel film was a dud (Fan4stic, New Mutants, Dark Phoenix, etc).

Genre-wide, the hit rate ain't all that great anymore, and therefore we have superhero fatigue. Phase 4 should get some blame but there are like 8 comic book movies a year.

when you look at how well across the spider-verse is being received, i don't think you can just blame superhero fatigue. No Way Home also did pretty well despite coming after a bunch of mediocre marvel content on disney+.

the bottom line is that despite an unprecedented run of good-to-great content all the way through Endgame, there has been a noticeable drop in quality of pretty much everything since then. marvel has lost the "benefit of the doubt" that it enjoyed with moviegoers for over a decade.

The early MCU built on itself, with a strong debut from RDJ as Tony Stark. The first two Iron Man films fully establish Tony Stark and open up the MCU with teasers for the Avengers. Then Thor is introduced, followed by Cap.

Many of the current MCU characters are either brand new, or young kids, that **boom** get super powers...and now all of a sudden we're supposed to put them on the same level of Iron Man, Cap, Thor, Guardians, Hawkeye, Black Widow...after 1-2 films or a D+ series.

The current MCU is just not the same feel at all. That doesn't mean some of the new group won't grow into lovable favorites. But I think right now there's an oversaturation of characters in quantity, with less depth and quality. Whereas the build-up to the first Avengers really just focused on a deep dive of Iron Man, Thor, Cap...with Fury, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Loki introduced in small doses as side-characters in those early films.

Today, it feels like Marvel is trying to push too many characters very quickly and there's a lot of noise.

100% agree. A lot of people didn't even like Thor until his 5th appearance. At this rate Ms Marvel's 5th appearance will be 2036.

Not a movie, but I just off the Guardians of the Galaxy ride at Epcot. It's a strong challenger for best ride at Disney. It's a perfect fit for the feel of the movies.

I think it's 100% the best ride at disney


The only other ride in the conversation for me is Rise of the Resistance. For a first time rider, I think Rise is better. The scale of that ride is unreal. The only issue with it is that the second time through, it's not quite as impressive.

On the other hand, I think my second ride of Guardians was even more fun than the first time. I want to go back and keep riding until I've heard all the songs.
