It was a part of it with a brief mention of the Avengers 1 events, but I have no idea if they are kind of resetting with this series and keeping the same characters but not treating all of those shows as fully cannon.
It looks like, based on the trailer, that they are picking up the story some years after those series.

Finally a movie is addressing Eternals.
The poster with the buildings making a star is cool.

The concept on these is really cool but outside the Hulk on #1 and the angelic pose on #3 they don't quite land. Need stronger poses and better framing of the subjects.

Anthony Mackie just seems like a good dude.

I met and had dinner with his brother, Calvin, once at A&M. We brought him in to give a speech and he's an awesome guy. I'm going to assume Anthony is too until proven otherwise.

It's back to the basics for Marvel when it comes to the movie, which sees an entirely new cast. Mackie's Sam Wilson take up the mantle of Captain America, the hero previously played by Chris Evans. Tonally, the movie stays away from sci-fi elements and the multiverse and features an entirely new cast.

That's less than Quantumania….which if I'm not mistaken when that film released it was one of the lowest grossing MCU films to date…..

That crown is now owned by The Marvels which obviously this film will do way better than but yeah as expected there's no way this movie is making its budget back

Is anyone excited for this movie? I'll probably eventually watch it when it comes on Disney+, maybe.

We're still three weeks out and projections this early are almost always low. Granted, there are exceptions to that rule, but it could very well end up doing over $100M that weekend. It's a four-day holiday weekend, football will have ended the week before, and the NBA will be on its All-Star break. Considering we haven't had a grounded, old-school Marvel movie in years, then throw in the Harrison Ford factor, and I think it has a chance to do pretty damn good. The movie also of course has to *be* good, but personally I've gotten more excited/confident with each trailer. We shall see…

I'm not saying this is gospel, but I think there is some recent goodwill towards Marvel with the younger generation with how popular their new video game is, Marvel Rivals. It has erased some of the bad aftertaste of towards the execs about the last phase. We will see though. This is Mackie's first major movie like this, and Harrison Ford hasn't been a major box office draw in years imo.

I'm definitely down. The trailers all show the same footage, which is either good (surprises to come) or bad (we've kinda seen it all and know how it'll play out, more or less). But I've liked the footage I've seen.

Deadpool and Marvel Rivals definitely have picked up the slack but we need a good old-fashioned traditional MCU film to deliver. That will go a long way toward building up hype again.

4 day holiday weekend? People actually get Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day off?

I meant three-day. I'm traveling that Friday to Monday and probably had that in the back of my mind. I was also in NBA mode and they take off that Friday for the beginning of the All-Star break. Not that NBA ratings or lack thereof will affect the box office all that much, but with Mackie in the lead I do think it could maybe bring out more of the black audience. Especially considering it's the same weekend Black Panther opened to insane numbers in 2018.

Quantumania also released on a holiday weekend and did 120 million. True projections can change but just not off to a good start.

If the film is good though then the projections could be irrelevant with the following week performances.

How consequential is this movie and its box office performance?

It seems fairly inconsequential to me. Marvel already has the next steps mapped out and if this one tanks, it seems like it would be easy enough to pivot and relegate the Mackie version of Cap to a supporting character.

I don't think a bad performance tells us (or Marvel) anything we don't already know.

Given the current trend of marvel movies/shows and the resulting lowering of expectations, I see this one as almost pure upside and I'm looking forward to it

I felt that way about the first one.

The best Captain America movies have had a puppet master pulling the strings. Surprisingly 3 of the 4 now have a big red guy Captain America has to take down. I have not watched any trailer or done any sort of deep dive into this movie, but I'm aware the Red Hulk is the villain. Hopefully that's a red herring, and there is a compelling mastermind behind him that Sam has to take down.

Yes. Ford has taken over the role of Thaddeus Ross from William Hurt, who died in real life. And Thaddeus Ross in this movie is now president/becomes Red Hulk.

It sounds like Tim Blake Nelson is playing that "compelling mastermind" part, quite literally. I think we've only heard him in the trailers so far, but they've yet to reveal his look/ultimate role.

Just realized Tim Blake Nelson is playing the same character he did in The Incredible Hulk (2008).

I'm assuming by his character's name what his ultimate role will be.
I figure he will be the MCU's version of The Leader. Hopefully whatever they do is better than the MODOK abomination.

I take it back. If you consider Big Red as a nickname for a Soviet agent, then technically Captain America has fought a big red guy in all four of his movies.

A Troubling Comparison to The Eternals

Released in 2021, The Eternals marked Marvel's first major financial failure, grossing just $164.9 million domestically and $237.2 million internationally for a worldwide total of $402 million.
The Eternals had a production budget of $236.2 million.

Brave New World faces a much steeper climb. With a rumored production budget between $350 and $375 million--over $100 million more than The Eternals at the lowest projection--this film could become a far bigger bomb even if it performs similarly at the box office. After factoring in marketing costs, which often equal the production budget, and theater cuts of ticket sales, the movie would need to exceed $900 million globally to break even according to some projections.

Based on current reports, Brave New World is unlikely to hit that target.

900 M is more than Dune 2, Wicked, Mufasa, GotG3, Fast X, SM Across the Spider Verse, Black Panther 2, & The Batman. That doesn't seem like a realistic target.

I would be shocked if those budget numbers are true. Yes, the movie went through reshoots, but that would be, like, one of the top two or three most expensive movies ever made, if not the most expensive ever.
rhutton125

With all the reshoots I was expecting a massive budget but then with this supposed $180 number, I started to hear that the # of days of reshoots total wasn't that ridiculous. So who knows. Are things any cheaper post-COVID?
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
They're cheaper in the sense that productions no longer have to pay for Covid protocols, but otherwise it's about the same.

you gotta remember though this film went through 3 re-shoots….with one of them dang near remaking the entire film and shooting additional action scenes that they never planned on….this sucker was expensive

Supposedly only 22 days of reshoots. Maybe not as extensive as we'd heard..?
