From the court videos the difference between the defense and the prosecution was night and day. The state looked so unprepared and came off amateurish.

I bet Durst's lawyer's head nearly exploded when he started talking.

I agree this was the best episode so far and I want Dick DeGuerin to defend me if I am ever charged with murder. also thought it was interesting that he counseled Durst not to do the documentary but it sure is going to be good for DeGuerin.
So long as you aren't being prosecuted by Kelly Siegler. She bats 1000 against Deguerin. But yes, he and Chip are excellent trial attorneys. They successfully defended Durst and allowed Durst to kill again. Bravo.

Excellent show, though. I just hate seeing murderers go free.

Its an unbelievable true story, and he's one weird cat. Peed on the candy aisle in a convenience store a year ago, I remember that story. Hadn't heard the one below where he tries to intimidate/freak out relatives:

Nutjob New York real estate heir Robert Durst the only suspect in his wife's 1982 murder was busted today for ignoring orders to keep away from his estranged brother, law enforcement sources said.
Durst, 70, who lives in a $1.75 million townhouse in Harlem, allegedly approached Douglas Durst's place at 413 West 43rd St. at 8:30 a.m. on June 2 and menacingly glared into a surveillance camera, freaking out a worker inside.
The employee alerted higher-ups in the famed Durst Organization, who called cops.
Robert had been ordered to stay from his brother in April 2012, sources said.
Prosecutors said during his arraignment tonight that Durst also stared into the security cameras of other relatives who live in neighboring homes, and a judge issued 13 orders of protection telling the Durst to stay away from his relations.
And they revealed that Durst in 2008 tried to sneak onto Douglas' Westchester property while wearing a ski mask over his face in 72 degree weather.
An armed and bitter Durst also once visited Douglas at his Westchester home, leading authorities to believe he might try to kill him, sources told The Post in 2003.
Durst was freed after bondsman Ira Judelson posted $5,000 bail.
The brothers have been estranged since their father named the younger Douglas, 68, head of the family's real estate empire over his erratic older brother.
Investigators from the Manhattan DA's office picked up Durst outside his Harlem home, and he was awaiting arraignment last night on the violation.
Durst has long been linked his wife's disappearance from their South Salem cottage in Westchester. He was never charged in the crime and her body was never found.
Durst was questioned in connection with the 2000 shooting death of Susan Berman, a close friend of the couple's who was set to talk to investigators.
After that killing, he moved to Galveston, Texas, where his violent and behavior continued.

Hey spoiler alert on that, I had no idea he killed again after Galveston. I remember the Galveston trial vaguely but don't know the rest of his story so it is all new to me.

This gets better with every episode. Holy crap, I got chills during the break in the interview and he starts reciting to himself, "I did not knowingly and intentionally lie."

It's an interesting argument that the show is trying to take, but I highly doubt LAPD never thought about matching Durst's handwriting to the 'cadaver note' before. Not an loose end that I would think a competent detective would leave untied.

If these guys were competent detectives then Durst would be locked up. Regardless, I'm interested to see how this goes. But if for some weird reason you weren't convinced he was guilty well there should be no doubt about it now.

Handwriting is marginally important because the killer used block printing. The misspelling of Beverly and timing of the letter are huge. Detectives would never have seen that letter or those clues.

I was in early college when all this was going on, the Galveston part and the trial. So I had no idea about the national response. SNL? John Stewart? etc. So I found that interesting.

I didn't catch that Beverly was misspelled. Was it misspelled on Bob's letter to Susan or just the police note?

Doug Durst freaked out when Andrew (dir) approached him at the part. He went and found his, I'm assuming security guy to get eyeballs on him. Very paranoid coming from the Durst Empire.
Either Seymour and co. wanted nothing to do with this because they know Bob is guilty, or they truly hate their son and brother and want nothing to do with it/support him.

One episode to go. I've thoroughly enjoyed this. But I agree, they taken Bob's handwriting samples before, there is no way this is brand new findings. But that note is very telling.

It was misspelled the same way in the letter to police and the letter Durst wrote to Susan in March before she was killed in December. The timing is everything. Durst AND the whoever sent the "Cadaver" note to police misspelled the same word in the same way within a few months of each other. Huge.

Not surprised at all. That letter with the misspelling and timing is HUGE. Add that to the motive he already had to keep her quiet about his wife's murder AND the opportunity (he was in CA at the time then flew back shortly after the murder).

I bet he gets charged in the next year or so.

I probably missed it, but did he not get in any trouble for dismembering that guy? I know they found him not guilty of murder, but is it not against some law to go around cuttin up dead people?

He was charged with murder but wasn't charged with any kind of destruction of evidence or obstruction of justice, so the defense made the jury focus solely on the actual event around Morris Black's death in the apartment.

Since there were just two men in the room and one ended up dead, the prosecution would be forced to prove that it wasn't self-defense, which was nearly impossible to do because Durst took the head and its bullet hole(s) from the rest of the dismembered body parts and was never found.

He served time in Galveston for jumping parole but that was it.

Oh and Bob's defense for the letter thing: "Yes I went to Susan's house, the door was open, I walked in and she was dead on the floor. I panicked and left and sent the note to the Beverley, err Beverly Hills Police."

Problem is that he has given so many interviews over the years this story will be inconsistent with his other accounts of his CA trip if he tells it for the first time in 2015. He can't really say he "forgot" to mention the part of this trip where he saw the dead body of someone he knew AND he sent the letter to BPD. Besides, they asked him about that letter to BPD in this show and he denied knowledge of it.

I'm sure it is. But he was on trial for murder, not for cuttin up dead people. That was the loop hole that the defense exploited. There was not enough evidence to prove murder of Mr Black. So the facts of cutting and dumping the body were not the issue, the issue was murder.

What's the timeframe of this documentary?
I feel like at the Doug Durst awards I saw 2011 on some of the power point slides.

He wanted to talk to Douglas about the movie he was making so that might explain that timeline.

When they were recording calls with Doug's representative and with Susan Berman's stepson, the dates on the recorder indicated June or July of 2012.

I'm guessing that it took them some time to shop this documentary around, and with the success of True Detective and Serial, HBO finally pulled the trigger (pun intended).
