How long do you want to ignore this user?
In the film Rounders, how does matt damon's character win over 60 grand in the end?
Mike(damon's char) goes in with 10 grand into KGB's club. He then wins kgb's 10 and decides to to play again. So at that point, he has 20 grand. If KGB continues the game, he should have bought in for 20 grand himself. That should total 40 grand. For Mike to win 60, KGB would have to buy in with 40 grand. Doesn't make sense.

Maybe there was a re-buy at a midpoint?

Mike would have had $20,000 then, so he'd still be clear of the debt.

He'd have been clear of the debt, but wouldn't have paid back his professor yet. Plus he was still 20k in the hole to KGB. So he eventually won his full 30k back from KGB, plus an additional 20k. Mike did tell him he could reload at anytime, so presumably he was tilted when Mike spotted his tell and reloaded.

He had $55k when he busted KGB. Mike paid off the 15k debt for Worm and the 10k back to the professor then was left with original bankroll. I guess KGB had reloaded at some point to back that happen.

At the end he says he ended up winning $60,000.

As said, KGB could reload at any time.

At some point you here Mike say KGB can buy back into the game anytime. Assuming he kept adding more money... movie never showed him do it more than once.

I get what you're saying. Start with 10, double to 20, double again to 40. Minus 15 to KGB. Minus 10 to professor. 15 left.

Mike tells KGB he can reload at anytime. There's nothing that says he has to get an equal number of checks to Mike when he does.

Correct. He said he walked out with almost $60 grand. He paid off Worm's debt and paid back the professor and the Chesterfield, and ended up where he started, "with 3 stacks of high society".

KGB probably reloaded $20k twice, once to match Mike's stack and then once more after he lost it.

They play 10,000 each, nobody quits till one of them had it all. After the first game, Mike is up 10,000.

He originally lost 30,000 to KGB. So that 30,000 minus the 10,000 Mike just won means that between the to of them, KGB is still up big. Reminding him of this, KGB goads Mike into letting the full 20 ride, KGB re-ups, and they keep playing.

Turned my 10 grand into just over 60. Paid 15 to Gramma. 6 went back to the Chesterfield. And as for Worm, well, I figure we're even. And after the 10 going back to the professor, I'm back where I started, with three stacks of high society.

15,000 + 6,000 +10,000 = 31,000 in debts

61,000 - 31,000 = 30,000, where Mike was when he started.

(Shut up, I'm bored.)

So there is a giant hole in the story.

There's no hole in the story.

Everybody here seems to have come to the exact same conclusion as to how he ended up with the amount of money he said he did.

The exact progression of $ increments is not exhibited during the KGB match. After Mike speaks with Gretchen Molle, he states his situation as he walks to the cab.

Another question I've always had - after Worm leaves the Chesterfield with his winnings (and the original marker on Mike's vouch), I think he had $10k. Then he runs into Grandma, who tells him he bought up all his debts and owes him $15k. Then he grabs all the money Worm had on him. I know Grandma is a sleazeball and engages in "gorilla math", but why didn't Worm get any credit for the money he "gave" to Grandma?

Seems like he would only owe $5k after that.
Old School Brother

gramma told worm that he owed him $25k. $25k - $10k = $15k.

Okay but why all the drama on the last hand? If Mike loses, he's still safe but KGB makes it seem like that Mike is dead if he loses that hand.

No way Mike doesn't double and triple down on that azz when its offered.

Mike hadn't paid back the 15k since he was still playing with it.

The last pot was huge. It was $13,200 at the turn and then Teddy KGB went all in with several stacks of higher chip values than what he previouly bet. The pot was probably over $50k. Even though Mike would have had money left over he wouldn't have had enough to cover the debt to Grandma/KGB.

Right before they start the second game (after KGB goads him into it), Mike states "feel free to reload at anytime"....we just have to assume KGB reloaded a time or two after Mike explains that he ended up with $60k.

The hole in the story was that they didn't take advantage of Gretchen Mol's naked talents while she was still in her prime vs. letting Boardwalk Empire do it after she'd slipped a little.

I only wish that on the final hand they had shown KGB's hole cards instead of Mike's. Let the viewer watch KGB talk trash throughout the hand and then reveal that Mike has the goods when he calls KGB's all-in.
