'Ten' took almost half a year to hit Gold.

'Nevermind' did it in 2 months.

There's really no debate on what band made grunge mainstream.
Facelift was released aug 1990, and it went gold in 1990. It was also the first grunge album to go platinum, and first grunge album to reach the top 50 in America on the Billboard 200.
Sap went gold in 2 weeks.

So, what does your fact prove?

someone who is depressed enough to kill themselves is not thinking about repercussions for anything. And if they did, I doubt repercussions from a couple festivals would even make the list.
Well, I didn't mean "how could he do this with some big shows coming up". Ugh.

I meant this effects gigs huge festivals coming up where they are headlining, so this throws a big wrench into all that. Tons of tickets sold on the promise of Soundgarden.

That's a pretty good synopsis. I would have thrown Tool and Rage Against the Machine in there for good measure. In my circle, it seemed like those were the bands that followed that the now unified fans absolutely loved.

They should just replace them with Candlebox...what could go wrong?

The festival on Saturday (pointfest) is totally canceled.

Curious to see what transpires over the weekend at rock on the range. They had headlining spot tomorrow night.

Does this smell funny to anyone else?

They ruled it suicide by hanging, yet he was found on the bathroom floor with a "band" around his neck.

Wife says they just talked on the phone and he seemed happy and was talking about stuff the next day. And yes, I know that people who commit suicide sometimes seem fine, etc.

He does this right in the middle of a tour. I'm no expert, but it seems like most suicide - especially celebrity suicides - happen when the person is in some period of downtime. Doing this while on the road, in a hotel, knowing you're leaving a mess for someone to find, etc....

I get that any one of the above can be picked apart, but just seems like the totality of circumstance here is strange. I'm just gonna say it - wouldn't be surprised if this was another accidental death by autoerotic asphyxiation.

Was going to mention Tool but forgot RATM. (Remember the linear notes from Rages first album: "All sounds made by guitar, bass, drums and vocals"?). Kim Thayil, Jerry Cantrell and Tom Morelo were doing with guitars what Mark Mothersbaugh did with synths.

Cornell's voice also made it Ok to be a singer in metal/hard rock again which lead to many future less quality post-grunge bands to have their vocals pushed to front of the mix in order to hide the horrible songs.

My thoughts from the gen board thread:

"It's interesting to me that I'm reading the call from his wife was unanswered, so she called a friend, who went to check on him, and called authorities around midnight after finding him... That seems like a lot to happen between a show likely ending at 11 or later and midnight. These guys don't hang for a while after a show? Straight to the hotel room by himself? Wife calling him at say 11:30.. seems she'd shrug it off as he's showering or in a loud area or whatever."

And also strange: hanging himself, yet he was found on the floor. Is that even possible without them seeing damage from above, as if his body weight broke whatever it was hanging from?

Soundgarden was the band that made it ok for the metalheads to like grunge/rock music and vice versa. You could almost put Outshined, Slaves & Bulldozers, Mailman, and Fourth of July on any sludge-metal album and they'd fit right in.
Same would say the same about AIC and Facelift
I wouldnt disagree because all of the grunge-era bands crossed genres so very well and weren't afraid to wear their influences on their sleeves. Not to oversimplify it but the guitar-solo metal kids had AIC. The doom/sludge metal kids had Soundgarden. The punk/noise rock fans had Nirvana and the classic rock kids had PJ. Grunge music allowed us fans to also be unabashed fans of Led Zeppelin, the Melvins, Megadeth, Sonic Youth, Iggy Pop, Black Sabbath, and the Pixies, all at the same time.

Well said.

8 hours later and I'm still completely saddened and don't want to believe this is real. Cornell is one of my favorite vocalists and front men of any band. I've seen him about 10 times either solo, with Soundgarden, appearing onstage with Pearl Jam, and lastly at Temple of the Dog reunion show in Seattle in November. He was special and I feel privileged to experience those shows. I will miss everything about Cornell and his impact on rock and roll. His songs and his friends/peers/influences are a huge piece of my life and it doesn't seem right for him to be gone.

I agree -- seems like all his prior tweets about wife, kids, venues were positive. Also, seems like he was tearing it up at the Detroit show -- according to videos and social media. But, who knows what was really going on in his head/heart.

You would think in that short amount of time he would still be on a "high" from just comin off stage.

This does seem odd.

Yep, Suicidal Tendencies was also on the bill...no pun intended. Think there was another tour with RATM maybe, where we got The Roots as the replacement for AIC.

I probably can't say anything that hasn't already been said in this thread, but we lost the greatest vocalist of our generation last night.

I was lucky enough to see him four times; once with Audioslave, then solo, then with Soundgarden, and finally I flew out to LA to see him perform with Temple of the Dog. You'll be hard pressed to find anyone to disagree the guy was something special with a microphone.

we know each other well, and I don't in any way disagree with Cornell being nothing short of amazing on vocals. That said, I think Maynard is better.

Soundgarden is, was, and always will be more palatable to the masses over Tool, but Maynard's vocals are better.

We may disagree, but you know what I'm getting at, and know, despite what the above sounds like, i'm taking nothing away from Cornell.

not to get all sappy or whatever, but...

What bums me out about all of this is that I looked up to these guys (read: Staley, Weiland, Cobain, Cornell) b/c they put all their dark **** on paper and sang it to the world. It showed me that even though **** sucked, I could get through it. Things sucked, but it was just that. Life was more than dark, depressing ***** One by one, they are gone to their demons.

I'm not saying I had any deep, crazy demons or was ever suicidal, but it bums me out that they likely helped out thousands of people, yet couldn't help themselves.

if we're judging who had better mysterious cryptic lyrics, then sure Maynard wins.

Otherwise, Cornell is the better vocalist, and an amazing songwriter to boot. He had better range, and just an A+ rock and roll voice. Maynard has a great voice, but it seems he rarely uses it. Lots of whisper/mumbling from him.

Cornell could do amazing covers too, reworking them to his own.

AND, He was so damn prolific. 6+ releases from SG, TOTD, 5 solo records, 3 audioslave, soundtracks (great expectations, singles, bond). Singing on other people's albums (slash, AIC)

And he sang with Maynard.

Now with Chris's tragic passing, Ed and Mark Lanegan are the only big frontmen left from that era, the latter oddly enough being possibly the biggest addict at one point out of any of them. Maybe not Layne, but regardless, Mark also got the least amount of attention compared to the rest and may have the longest career depending on when Ed hangs it up. I can see both performing for decades longer, but it's funny how over the years Mark's career is the one I have come to follow the most be it solo or collaborative projects. His music has also aged very well. I don't wanna take anything away from Chris here because he was absolutely one of my idols, and my world got turned upside down (pun not intended) when I got the Superunknown cassette, but atleast we have those two as well as the other band members including Jerry Cantrell who is a god in his own right.

I'll admit when David Bowie died, I was shocked. But I wasn't that sad. Kinda preceded my time. Prince was much worse.

Hell, I wasn't that big a fan of Kurt Cobain either. I loved Staley's vocals and same for Weiland so both of those sucked.

But this one is my all-time favorite. First time I've ever felt this saddened. I want to go to a bar where his music is blasting and just get drunk.
