I hear you. I just figured the Sheridan factor would make up for that. Because he doesn't really make bad movies. In fact, he seems to be TexAgs' favorite filmmaker.

Sheridan plus mbj + the director will probably end up with a homerun.

Thinking back the book is pretty much what Lee Child would later turn into the plot of EVERY Jack Reacher book.

Book reader here and Without Remorse and Rainbow Six are two of my favorites. I think many of us readers are a bit skeptical based on how they treated Ryan in the Amazon series, I.e. not an analyst but essentially a bad-ass tactical spy.

That said, the trailer for WR looks awesome, big fan of Jordan and Sheridan.

With how much this board loves Taylor Sheridan (as do I), I'm legit surprised by how many "meh"/"hard pass"-like posts I'm seeing. I thought there would be WAY more excitement for this, for that fact alone. Sheridan teaming with Michael B. Jordan to tell a revenge story set in the world of Tom Clancy sounds like a TexAgs wet dream. Instead, people are b/tching that this isn't faithful to what sounds like some pretty dated source material? Huh? This looks awesome. Sign me the hell up.
It probably will be a great movie.. but fans of the source material hate when you stray to far from it. It is the same issue w/ World War Z.. if the movie was called Zombie War .. folks would have loved it more. WWZ was a great movie in it's own right and didn't have to borrow from a great book. (Would love to see a Netflix series about WWZ book... just sayin that would be awesome.. jump from story to story with only the narrator as the common element between them) Starship Trooper is another example.. good popcorn film but the very small fans of the book were upset with how much different the adaptation to the movie.

Not saying Hollywood can't stray.. just be faithful to the material .. see Lord of the Ring series.

To be fair, I will watch it because I love Michael B. Jordan in everything he has done so far.. but this won't be Without Remorse for me.. I will write it as "random title.. better lead to good Rainbow Six" .. in order for me to enjoy it. .. also i am in the Liev camp. I always read Clark as a guy that could pass as a nobody.. but secretly a weapon.

It'll probably be just fine, but I think a lot of the things that made Without Remorse (book) memorable had to do with time period and setting and also it was basically a flashback prequel of a loved and established character. So now instead of a Vietnam vet, he's an Iraq/Afghanistan vet. Instead of taking down a street gang, he's fighting some international criminal ring (?). Instead of filling in backstory of a guy we already know, it's establishing a new character.

The trailer did show a lot of the bigger action sequences, but I don't think that means the writers are somehow abandoning the themes that made the book work. I get that folks want to see the books and characters ported directly onto the screen, but that rarely happens. I think of it more as being an adaptation and I'll probably enjoy it like I did Jack Ryan

That's why Willem Defoe was good as Clark IMO. He has scars, isn't jacked, and isnt Hollywood handsome like MBJ or Liev Schreiber. He seemed like the kind of unassuming guy you might walk by and never assume is a trained killer.

Meh. Looks like another instance of attaching the name of a popular book to a movie that doesn't have much to do with the "source material".

The movie might be objectively good, but it's doing a bad job of being what it claims to be. Give it a different name so that we're more likely to get an actual Without Remorse movie someday. Sheridan + MBJ means they'll make their money either way, I don't understand* why they bother paying for IP in these scenarios.

I don't think I ever read this book, but the trailer makes it look like a generic movie.

I see that someone anemd Will Staples is also a credited writer, whereas in Sheridan's other movies he is the sole writer.
Did Sheridan come into to touch the story up? DId Sheridan write the initial script and this person came in and worked from that?

So far Sheridan hasn't let me down, so I'll still see this, it just doesn't seem that 'Tom Clancy' to me. Wouldn't be the first time a trailer has misrepresented a movie.

I've stayed away from this thread and previews. Clark isn't even a character. Nothing like the book except for revenge killing.

I just finished the book. I've read many of the clancy novels and I'm not sure why I hadn't read this one. I will watch the movie, but I doubt I will like it. I'm trying to go in with an open mind but I feel like they are going to butcher the book.

It was an ok action movie. Not sure why they named it Without Remorse though. Had nothing to do with the book except a few character names.

As an action movie I'd probably give it 6/10 as Without Remorse I'd give it 1/10.

I agree here. This book is my least favorite of the Ryanverse novels up to Red Rabbit. I never finished Teeth of the Tiger, it just wasn't good.

Revenge for a dead junky hooker seems too pulpy and almost unClancy.

In any event I won't be watching this dumpster fire. John Clark was not black.

I didn't like Dafoe in that role for the same reason I didn't like Cruise as Jack Reacher. While he's got the acting chops to pull off the character, he wasn't built for it physically. Clark was written as a 6'1" muscular dude that you'd think long and hard about picking a fight with him. Dafoe is a wiry little guy that you'd think twice about messing with because he can pull off dangerous crazy, not because he's physically imposing.

The one movie where I think they do a good job of portraying John Clark is The Sum of All Fears with Liev Schreiber as Clark.

Watched it. Enjoyed it. It's not the book though. Could've stood on its own without the Tom Clancy branding. A little weak on the story development for sure, but I'll watch the Rainbow Six sequel if they actually make one.

As soon as the guy walked into the scene I was like that's the bad guy. I mean outside of one movie has he ever not been the villain?

Overall, it was an enjoyable ride. It's not anywhere close to a shot for shot porting of the book to the screen, but that's not what I was hoping for or expecting. They took what made Clark Clark from the book and gave it a good update so it fits in the Ryanverse Amazon is trying to put together here. I thought MBJ worked really well in this role and I think it'll be fun to see where they go next. Maybe a Rainbow Six team or some sort of intervention step in the next Jack Ryan season. I liked that we got a young Ritter - thought Jamie Bell was a great casting there.

Watched tonight just to take in an action movie. I knew it would resemble the novel for all of about 1.2 microseconds, which even a bit of a stretch - it's been since the book was first published that I read it, so my memory is a bit foggy on the minute details.

As a stand-alone action movie, it is a bit generic. Characters are not well developed for the most part. The story is serviceable, but that's about it. Not a great movie, but also not a bad movie. Just kinda ... there.

But I did get a bit of a smile with that mid-credits scene that essentially says ... Rainbow 6.
