Relates to entertainment - at what age would you be comfortable taking your kid and one of his / her friends to an R movie without consulting the other kids parents?

Not so hypothetical at my house right now. A tad upset with my son but much more so with a parent that made a judgement call I don't agree with.

That's complete BS to take someone else's kid to an R rated movie without clearing it with the parents.

So many stereotypes floating in my head about the type of "parent" who would take someone else's underage kid to an R movie.

Look for new friends.

It was a parent we did not know. We had a mutual friend (whose kid also went and they are equally upset) that vouched for the other parents. Lesson learned.

If they require a parent to take them, then they are too young to take without getting the parents approval.

Personally, I email a link to the Common Sense Media review to parents if I am taking their kids to anything over PG.

That is a BS parent move. Similar to letting a kid's friend drink at their house before 21.

Maybe they didn't know or the kids lied to the parents about which movie they went to or what the rating was.

Tell us which movie it was, please.

I have younger kids, so maybe a tad different, but I always clear entertainment with the other parents in advance (whether at home or the movie theater). I've seen a wide variety of rules around entertainment from parents, so it is always smart to ask first.

How upset I would be is dependent on the movie, but I simply cannot imagine taking someone else's kid to an R rated movie.

Unless of course, the "kid" in question is a college roommate.

I'm guessing John Wick 3 is going to be the movie in question. If so, I'd have a major issue with someone taking my underage kid to that without clearing it first.

Stopping kids from seeing R rated movies should stop around age 8.

Supposed to be seeing Godzilla (classified action / adventure). Instead saw Brightburn (classified horror).

Age 14.

(For reference: IMDB Parents Guide vs Godzilla)

I could see how a parent might see little difference between the two. That said, R is a line in the sand that we discuss at our house. Over the next few years I expect he and I will sit down and watch a few that tell a good story (A Few Good Men, Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator, etc). But I would not even consider doing that with one of his friends without the consent of their parents.

What kind of ****ty parent would rob their kid of the rite of passage that is sneaking into an r rated movie and lying to your parents about it?

Yeah I can understand being pissed about that.

No sneaking involved but he definitely lied to us at first. My wife pried it out of him ("What was the name of the main character?" [followed by deer in headlights]).

Had he simply walked in the house, fessed up, and got it out in the open his punishment might be a bit less. But he's 14. The parenting fail here is what really ticks me off.

Your kid sucks at lying. My 13 year old would have read the wiki ahead of time.

Of course later he would brag to his little brother about seeing an R rated movie without our consent. Busted.

I really hope this is a massive troll. 8-10 is when I started debating taking my kids to see PG-13. My kids won't see an R rated until they are 12-13 at minimum and then only if I have previewed it first.

The google machine says Brightburn is a horror superhero movie. I guess I just don't see the big deal, especially since we are taking about a teenager and not a little kid, JMO. Not like they took him to a screening of Debbie Does Dallas.

Your kid isn't very bright. He couldn't come up with "Godzilla " as the name of the main character in "Godzilla"?

Op didn't immediately mention his kid is 14. Personally, I would be more pissed that the parent didn't ask the wife or I for permission first, than the fact that my 14 year old saw a horror movie. If my 13 year old wanted to see Brightburn with friends I would probably let him.

Right. You probably wouldn't load them up and take them yourself without clearing it with their parents first.

The main character's name is Godzilla. I saw the movie, and I couldn't tell you any of the human characters' names WHILE I WAS WATCHING.

No I wouldn't. Not my kid, not my place to decide what is appropriate.

I wouldn't take a minor of any age to even see a PG-13 movie without checking with their parents first. But I know we're more conservative than most.

If it were my kid, you bet I would be pissed. My degree of anger would depend on what the movie was. We've watched R movies at home with our 15 and 13 year-olds, but only movies that we've seen before ourselves and know when to tell them to look away if necessary.

With all of this said, I'm pretty sure I saw Halloween at one of my buddy's houses when I was 7. I doubt my parents knew about it or would have cared to know about it in advance. Given that, we are all yuge poosays today.

I saw it around 8 or so. Was watching with my cousin, and he left the room at some point. Finished it by myself.

Became a huge horror fan from then on.

Show them The Exorcist instead. The Saw series is trash.

Crap move to do for the friends parents.

The age a kid should be able to see R movies is completely dependent on the kid.
Some kids are mature enough to handle R at 10, some at 16.
