As an avid reader of WWII history and a warbird nut, this looks fantastic. I hope they get the actual history right but won't be holding my breath (although if I see the book Shattered Sword referenced anywhere in the film's credits ...) I am cautiously optimistic in that this trailer clearly shows some TBD Devastators (absent in the original version, replaced by Vindicator-type aircraft in that movie). It was a flight of Devastator torpedo bombers that Aggie George Gay was shot down in (Gay was the only survivor of that torpedo squadron, who had a floating front row seat to the American victory that day).

Looks like this is going to cover a lot of ground from December 7 1941 to June 4-6 1942, with the Doolittle Raid thrown in there as well as Pearl Harbor.

Movie comes out November 8.

I say that because of Hollywood's inability to get basic facts about historic events even remotely correct. With a movie like Tora Tora Tora, I can understand the filmmakers using modified American aircraft to represent Japanese Val dive bombers as there are no flying examples of actual Vals remaining. The more recent Pearl Harbor movie showed Batman flying P-40s, which was accurate, except that the version of the Warhawk presented in tha tmovie was the N version, which was not available on 7 Dec 1941. (Caveat - only a warbird nut is ever going to recognize this).

So for this version of the Midway story, are they going to reference at all the feint toward the Aleutians that the Japs ran in concert with the action at Midway? Are they going to accurately portray the Japanese motivations for launching this action against the Americans at Midway? This trailer doesn't answer questions like that, but I will say that it gives me hope that visually they may be in the right ballpark (as opposed to the first poster art that I saw released for this movie, which featured a diving Dauntless dive bomber firing wing-mounted machine guns and a 4-bladed prop spinning off its radial engine - neither of which the Dauntless ever had).

This is directed by the guy that did 2012, 10,000 BC and Day After Tomorrow. This is going to be Pearl Harbor all over again.

I have little hope for this. But might go see it.

The original's theme music was awesome. The FTA Band played at every game in my day.

All the CGI leaves me with little hope

Mock Bay's Pearl Harbor all you want, but the effects/action in that movie 18 years ago still look better than the effects/action in this movie.

I still remember the first time I heard the FTAB play the theme to Midway at Kyle Field. I love the fact that the band plays all these military movie themes, like Patton or even 1941.

So in lieu of CGI, how else are you going to do this movie with any degree of warbird accuracy? Yes, you can find a few flying F4F Wildcats and there are in fact 1 or 2 A6M Zeroes still flying (I think they would be inaccurate for the time of Midway though). I know the CAF has had a Dauntless, but something in my memory says they lost it in a crash. No flying Devastators exist to my knowledge. So then you could mock up a Devastator off of some other current aircraft, but it would never actually look like a Devastator, much like the Val that we see in these kind of movies or at airshows (it's not a Val dive bomber, but has been made to look kinda like one from some other airframe).

So that leaves you with models. Does anyone in Hollywood still use actual models such as they did for the original Star Wars movies, or movies like Battle of Britain?

The CGI and effects don't look very good. It looks too cartoony/video gamey.

Also, gotta love the super serious lines of WELL WASHINGTON IS WRONG

I love a good war movie, but this doesn't look great.

On the other hand, he also did Independence Day, The Patriot, and Stargate.

It may turn out to be another Pearl Harbor even so, but I'll at least give it a chance. (I happen to enjoy watching Pearl Harbor whenever there are airplanes in the air in that movie - skip the love story garbage)

I don't think it's nearly as bad as some people make it out to be, and parts of it are absolutely stunning. Some of the "jokes" are pretty lame, as expected in a Michael Bay movie, and it's a little too cheesy at times, but man, the look of it is absolutely amazing and again, the action is incredible.

Agree that PH looks right other than inaccuracies in some of the aircraft that literally no one would notice anyway. But I fail to see what all of y'all are seeing with this Midway movie. Effects look to be on par with what they did in PH. Pearl had a mixture of CGI, real aircraft, and mock-ups. I don't expect real warbirds in Midway, necessarily, but for any cockpit close-ups, I'd expect they'd have one of those mock-ups on a gimbal-type device just like they've done in previous movies, including PH and Star Wars.

The air combat in this trailer looks pretty good to my eyes.

It's just the quality of CGI. The best CGI is the CGI you don't even know is there. MIdway just *looks* like a computer made it. Pearl Harbor could have very well had even more CGI, but the way it blends with the beautiful cinematography, looks/feels natural, has weight, etc. is the trick. Midway just looks super generic and lifeless to me, in terms of CGI. There's no style. And the weight thing is key. I have a couple of computer graphic artists friends and they always talk about "weight." There's an art to making a computer model feel like it's real by getting the physics just right. Case in point, Midway looks to steal a shot right out of Pearl Harbor - a plane that swoops in and it starts firing above a street, like 20 feet off the ground. The exact same shot is in Pearl Harbor (in a reverse angle), but the CGI plane in that shot has a weight and a movement that feels utterly real (even though I remember purists *****ing about the physics way back when). But here, in the Midway trailer, it just looks and feels like a computer model. It doesn't feel it's *there*. I'm not versed enough to articulate exactly why, but it's the same thing in almost every effects-heavy shot in this trailer vs. Pearl Harbor.

Southpark has the answer to this:

Also I am very in on this movie. Hard to know how the special FX will play in but Midway was a decisive battle that immediately turned the Pacific towards America's favor. If the results of the battle flipped we would have been on the defensive for many months and maybe even could have lost Hawaii, losing all foothold in the Pacific. Midway both decided who would have air/sea superiority in the Pacific and laid out the naval doctrine that is still in place today(that carriers project a nation's power). Unless if it is straight cartoony, I will look forward to seeing this one.

Exactly. The lighting, the cinematography, etc. just oozes classic Hollywood / Michael Bay. But Midway literally looks like a computer in 2019 directed/made the entire movie.

What bugs me the most about that trailer is how close the planes are flying to the ground or to the ships. In one scene the Japanese fighter is literally between buildings and below the top of the palm trees. That's absurd.

That said, with over four months to go to release date is it possible some of the CGI is not finished yet and the look will improve?

Similar shot exists in Pearl Harbor with a Zero chasing a P-40 right over the ground between buildings.

So tired of 100% use, over the top CGI.

It's gotten worse. Not better. Fake as ****. This is cringe worthy by that trailer.

I'll see it. I LOVE naval combat history so this will get my money. Just hope more work is done in these scenes.
