I tried to point it out to folks at the time, but 7 was unequivocally depressing proof that Disney had zero original ideas for the franchise other than recycling old crap in a safe way to make their ridiculous monetary investment back. It took 8 coming out before most people finally began to accept it. Solo was the last straw - a decent movie but one with no heart and zero innovation. At that point even Disney realized they were destroying a franchise that even Lucas and the second prequel couldn't kill, and vowed changes.
As far at the GOT writers taking over, their magic was in Martin's already written material, once they ventured outside of that, quality plummeted. So its put up or shut up time for them too.

That's not entirely true. Season 6 was outside of the book material and contained some of the best episodes in the series.

That's not to say that they'll have guaranteed success working on star wars. But they do have some ability. We'll see if season 8 or season 6 was the exception.

How much better could things have been though, if they had included Mara Jade and maybe the original kids of Leia and Han? The Rogue Squadron would have made a great series. I, Jedi could've made a great movie.

TFA was buoyed simply due to hype for new SW using the OG cast. It didn't hold up well in reflection. I won't get into TLJ. I'll see ep 9 in theaters but I'll bring very low expectations

I'll never deny anyone the right to criticize and critique Star Wars, but this thread makes me very happy that for me Star Wars is Star Wars and I've loved every single minute of it that I've been lucky to see. Don't care about perceived agendas or failings or whatevers. I couldn't be more hyped for TROS if I was in in the movie. Every day I look around for just one more snippet of news and I'm counting down the days to D23 for more info.

I can't nor do I want to be an adult and say and think adult things about the shortcomings of the franchise when it comes to Star Wars. Too busy loving it.

Well said - my feelings exactly. The sequels haven't been perfect, but I'm enjoying them and can't wait for IX. TFA was a monster success (Endgame couldn't match it domestically, even with inflation), and TLJ is in the Top 10 all time. I do think Disney needs to find a way to better map out a story going forward, but I give them a lot of credit for making quality films to this point.

While the story of the prequels was well conceived, the execution was poor. I'd say the sequels have done really well on the execution, but the story hasn't been as strong. Regardless, I enjoy the hell out of them.

The difference between marvel and star wars is that the marvel MCU is just that a universe. Star wars can't even fill a big country much less a galaxy.

The episodes of the clone war without anakin, rogue one, and rebels were great because it wasnt the same 4 (now 7) characters that we already know.

For most new characters, Marvel would introduce them by takin the time to make a solid movie that referenced and leaned on the broader mcu but didnt require it to exist and focused on that character.

For me it is this.

I am not the biggest fan of TLJ, but it was still in the Star Wars world. I enjoyed TFA, even though it was a rewriting of ANH. R1 is one of my favorite movies of all time and sits right behind ESB. Solo was not as bad as many say. It was a fun popcorn movie, and made me want to know more about what made Han, Han.

I cannot wait for the new one, and I hope they get creative and start a whole new adventure that pulls me into the world of Star Wars for years to come.

Ya know, if I hear James Gunn or taika waititi is directing a star wars film, I feel like I'm going to enjoy the film. Waititi took a character with two of the most boring and bland films in the MCU and he tuned the 3rd film into one of the best.

I don't think anyone has full confidence that SW will make it fun to watch.

Rotten tomatoes has TFA at 93% and TLJ at 91%, do you think those films deserve that level of praise?

Very fake news.

Only Star Wars film I've seen just once. In fact, only one I've seen less than probably 5 times.

I've got sons in the prime age to love Star Wars. They have never wanted to watch TLJ a second time.

One major eff up SW had in both the prequels and sequels were forced homages and tie ins to old characters. Most felt forced.

My opinion on TLJ has shifted quite a few times. It is the most confused I've ever been by a Star Wars movie. I'm not even sure what my opinion is of it vs. the opinion of others that I've just adopted over time.

This is where I am on this as well. It's such a well shot movie and is visually amazing, I want to like it so much but the more time that goes on the more I dislike it. I just really hated the way the story was told and there was no payoff at the end for any of the questions that were set up by TFA.

Regarding your last sentence, I think it's important to remember it was just Part 2 in a 3-part story. Maybe this last movie will satisfy a lot of those questions that came out of TFA. I'm withholding judgement on the overall sequel story until TROS comes out. I actually think JJ has the chance to make TLJ more palatable for a lot of people by what he does in IX.

Mine hasn't shifted at all. It was brutal the second the credits rolled.

To encapsulate it all with a single sentence;
Quote:

- RIan Johnson is directing more of these. (Insert Darth Vader "Noooooooooooo!" Gif)

TLJ is the only SW movie I have watched exactly 1 time.

I agree with you and maybe I didn't phrase it right. Not only did it not answer any questions, it completely turned every question on its ear to the point that it's going to to take some ultra creative writing to answer them. And in the case of Snoke, who I was really kind of looking forward to seeing more of as a villain, it ended it completely.

I'd say the main issue is that it isn't a 3 part story because they let Rian Johnson go off the reservation with part 2 and ignore any consideration of cohesion. .

Jedi Council tells Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon to try and figure out who the "dark warrior" is. Neither one of them every says a single word to him. Just light up the blades and go to work.

As my very best SW pal said after we watched it, "I mean, how about you start with "Who are you? What's your deal?"

While I don't disagree with this, one might think Disney may realize that those young folks (I was one) who lined up for each of the original movies and saw them multiple times might remain just as infatuated with Star Wars now as they were then.

nobody has seen a sith or dark warrior in their human lifetimes then one shows up and they send one Jedi and his plucky side kick... why not send a bunch?

Travel budget is always the first thing cut. Probably had a hiring freeze as well. That would explain why they were so reluctant to let Anakin in. Bet they needed a VP to sign off.

I will stick it out through 9, since it's kind of been a goal since the late 70's when I learned there were 9, but after that they have to truly earn my money to get me into a theater again. Of the 2 people I saw the prequels with as well as 7 (also my age and saw the original trilogy in theaters), one already bailed after 7, the other is now on the fence for 9. Sad to see. And without a burgeoning younger audience commitment (which isn't happening), and without China coming on board (box office there has been terrible), the franchise doesn't have a bright future.
Part of me wants to see Disney take it up the backside for what the they did, so it's kind of a win win.
This should only be read in Comic Book Guy's voice.
This is some unbelievable fandom right here. Insert ["everything is fine" house burning pic here]

I don't think there is any risk of Disney driving Star Wars into irrelevance. Disney doesn't really care about catering to old guys on the internet. Young people have always been the Star Wars target demographic.

Context is lost with random posts..I am not even close to a super fan, I go to the movies when they come out and that's about it...but for folks my age, seeing a fond piece of their childhood being turned into a somewhat better version of the later Rocky movies is sad. Especially when there is so much potential with the larger universe and Disney has handled them so cynically. Zero appetite for risk or innovation (outside of rogue one) in favor of paint by numbers vanilla retread stuff. The franchise deserves more. Sometimes it's just fun to vent on something you don't really have reason to talk about anywhere else.

That's all.

I was replying to Muckraker. I agree with you.

There are a few guys on this board that would defend a Star Wars movie if it was two hours of Rey passing a kidney stone. Biggest fan boys ever. It is obvious to everybody with a modicum of objectivity that there is a problem with this franchise right now, but those posters won't acknowledge it until there are mass firings and Disney reboots everything. Instead they'll take potshots at the majority of fans who are unhappy with what Disney has done so far.
