Saw it last night. It was a nonstop emotional roller coaster with pretty much no opportunity for you to relax. Sandler did an amazing job to the point I was screaming at my tv with some of the choices he was making in the movie. Don't think I can handle a second viewing.

Just saw it. Didn't like it. At all. Incredibly, over the top abrasive. I get it. Gambling is bad. Owing money to people who beat you up is bad. Being a habitual liar is bad.

I liked KG in the movie. The rest, nah. I'm out. Why even write this screenplay? If everyone is a scumbag and there is no point in anything... do we REALLY need ONE more nihilistic movie like this?

I haven't seen it but please list 2019's nihilistic movies.

If the trend continues someone should turn a comic book superhero into a movie.

Went yesterday. What a thrill ride start to finish. Kept looking at the SO a few times just shocked at what Sandler was pulling off in the film.

Only con to me was the very end/closing credits. I wanted a few more things but understood why they went the way they did.

Highly recommend it!

Man. What the hell did I just watch? That was a rollercoaster ride. Agree with what TC said - when you feel like it's over, it's not.

Thoughts: Sandler was awesome. KG was awesome. The mistress can get it. Bookies terrify me now.

Just saw it. Amazing thrill ride. First half is a little slow but second half is an adrenaline rush.

Was there something after the credits?

This is my first post on this board, as I am not a movies or art person. I go to the movies about once every three years or so, and these are my last three movies to see at a theatre: Wolf of Wall Street, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and the Borat movie. I might be missing one that I saw after Borat, but most movies aren't memorable to me.

With all that said, I want to go back and watch Uncut Gems again tonight. I want to take a friend of mine because I want to see parts I didn't pick up the first time, I want to share this unique experience with someone else who hasn't seen it and because my wife said it exhausted her, so she probably wouldn't be willing to go back twenty-four hours later.

I had to piss during the movie, but you never have a lull to get up. It's an action packed, unique movie. It's very crass, could be considered darkand the ending kind of sucks, but there is just something special about it.

My review of it sucks, too. I don't review movies, but just felt the need to say something about this one.

I still haven't seen Good Time, but will be remedying that soon. The Safdie Brothers are going to be making great movies for a long, long time. These guys are the real deal.

This movie easily comes into my top 3 of the year with Endgame and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. What a fantastic film. Any chance it gets a best picture nod?

I love the look of the Safdie Brothers films. Also, this movie had a lowkey amazing soundtrack/score.

Agree on the soundtrack. The 80's synth somehow fit just right.

I think this film is a work of art. It's certainly not for everyone, but it's probably replacing In Bruges as my favorite movie of all time.

I think that the writers and director intended for the movie's experience, the way it makes you feel, to be like the experience of betting on a sporting event.

For most of the movie it's just nervous energy and small highs and some brutal lows. Which is very similar to the experience of betting.

At the end when he finally thought he had the big win, it was taken away from him, quite literally, at the buzzer of the door.

I see some of you didn't like the ending, but I thought it was perfect. All his vices paid him back in a penultimate moment.

I thought it was simply brilliant. But I can totally understand why someone wouldn't like it. I have to disagree that this movie was nihilist, though.

Adam Sandler deserves the Oscar talk. He plays this character so well.

Saw it tonight and already bought a ticket to see it again tomorrow.

It's definitely my top of the year. Tough call between Parasite and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

I actually think Parasite is similar to Uncut Gems in some ways.

He kidnapped an armed man he owed major money for hours. It makes sense IMO. The fact that it was so shocking made it so good.

I've only seen Oscar talk for Sandler, not for the movie itself, but IMO it absolutely deserves it. My one worry is the older-skewing age of Oscar voters, as I don't think voters age 50+ are super into it, but who knows. It *did* have the highest grossing day of any film in A24's history (on Christmas Day), which should could for something. All I know is that it's in my top five of 2019, no question.

That said, I took my parents, one of my sisters, and my brother-in-law earlier this week and they all HATED it. My dad loves Apatow and Apatow-adjacent movies (i.e. he doesn't mind language or crude subject matter in the least) and is usually into stuff like this, but was just not a fan at all.

I saw it both times at the Alamo, which skews to more cinephiles. I didn't notice anyone hating it. I think everyone was just pushed to their limits.

This will be a film that I'll judge people's tastes on. If you don't enjoy it, then we probably have wildly different tastes.

Saw it with my folks too (60+) and they weren't fans. Wasn't so much the language, but they didn't like the tension.

I'm pretty surprised by the RT audience score (54%). I don't get it other than, I guess maybe casual moviegoers didn't realize how gritty it would be? I mean, there's nothing feel good about this or redeeming about Sandler's character. But there really are people like that in the world, and most of their stories don't have happy endings.

Saw with the wife last night and like some above she said she never wants to see it again even though she liked it. Wife said it kind of reminded her of Spike Lee's 25th Hour. It reminds us both of that seedy underbelly of living in NYC (we left around the time the movie takes place) where there's so much wasted wealth and street smarts and it seems like everything and everyone is playing a game or has a play and over time it makes makes you just dislike humanity.

I went home and immediately put on Weeknd's House of Balloons album (how did House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls not make any top tracks of the decade list?!) only to turn it off when I realized I have kids old enough to understand whats going on. That album/performer was absolutely perfect casting for the time period and ambiance.

Could the whole movie have been told in subtle glances and nods? Sandler's nods, glances/stares from bookie's muscle, a look from the jeweler, Sandler's father and son(!), KG's subtle smile and the amazement of the brother-in-law.

Was one of two movies I was really excited about seeing this holiday season. I don't get the love for this movie. Not a sympathetic character in the entire movie. Met way too many folks like the characters in this movie and seldom does it end well in the long run (Biz jets to prison to death with a path of destruction to those around you etc).

I guess the only message I really took away from it is the same old adage: "If you're going to lie, you need to have a really good memory." If the existence of that world is a revelation from the movie, then I could understand how it might hold some fascination. At least it had the ending I was expecting.......and would have been disappointed had it ended most any other way.

I just saw it, give it a 3/5. Just okay/meh. I can see why some of you like it but mostly didn't care for the lack of any redeeming qualities of the protagonist.

even after he tries to patch things up with his wife, he decides to go back to the Mistress in the end. Didn't care for him.

I was a little confused at the ending. Was the gunman an employee/strong arm of Arno's that ended up turning on Arno or was he more of a temporary thing hired to help with collection who decided to go for the bigger score?

I keep seeing some of you saying you didn't like it because of the lack of redeeming qualities, but that's what the movie is about. There are no good guys. It's not a happy movie. Sandler is a complete sleazeball.

He didn't go back to his wife because he genuinely felt bad or because he realized the error of his ways and missed her... he got mad at his GF and kicked her out in a fit of anger. It just showed in both instances how impulsive he was.

When he didn't have the girlfriend anymore, he decides to completely out of nowhere ask his wife if they could work it out... He specifically said "I've been thinking about things", but he hadn't... it was just spur of the moment self-preservation. Completely in line with his character. The next day he was back to his co-dependent gold-digging girlfriend.

The absolute best scene to me was him breaking down in his office realizing he had hit complete rock bottom. He had no one to blame but himself and his awful decisions, and his girlfriend saw an opportunity to weasel her way back in during his weakened state... Then he finally gets a break, he sells the diamond to KG, has all of his problems seemingly fixed, but what does he do instead? He bets it all impulsively... because that's the sick, addictive person he was. It's damn near stomach-churning, but that's why it's so good.

Very well said. I don't get the "no redeeming qualities" gripes either. Or, rather, I understand the observation that there is nothing redeeming about the characters, but what I don't understand is why some people need a redeeming character in the first place. It's an INCREDIBLY griping, well-told story, one told against such a vivid, authentic world, and personally, that's all I ever need or want from a movie. I could not care less if the characters themselves are good/bad/redeemed/whatever. Besides, those looking for some kind of "moral" ending, you got it. Sandler's character essentially gets a bullet to the head for the horrible, addictive person he was. He paid the price.

While I agree with everything in your post, crappy person gets what he deserved, tension galore, story told in an extremely tense and immersive manner.

I guess in the end it just wasn't a story I was interested in. None of those people are anyone I would ever want to know or associate with which is why I did not enjoy it. I don't know what people in my theater thought, but everyone just stood up and walked out quietly as soon as credits rolled. I went straight home and showered before kissing my wife.
TCTTS

Fair enough. I totally get not liking the movie in general. It's the "no redeeming qualities" gripe, specifically, that bugs me, as there are tons of great movies that feature no morally good or redeeming characters (There Will Be Blood comes to mind first and foremost). But if the subject matter or story isn't your thing, I completely understand.
