I laugh at this because this is me... I will ride shows out sometimes just because I invested enough in the story to see it through. Here are a few that I can think of that I bailed on though:

  • Heroes - Maybe around the end of season 2, cant remember. It really lost it after season 1.
  • NCIS - I think I stuck with it until Tony left a few seasons ago.
  • Suits - Think I watched the first three seasons, which was probably one too long
  • Fear The Walking Dead - Gave up on this after half a season I think
  • The Walking Dead - I stuck with this because I was going to see it through, and my wife likes it, but I finally had to give it up last year. I ended up watching the episode when Rick left just to see what they would do, and was mildly interested with the daughter thing. so I will occasionally have it on in the background, but that's about it.

I saw mention of people dropping the following earlier up in this thread:
  • Americans - I can understand if you dropped this in season 2. It got a little boring there for a while I think, but it made an upturn and just got better with each new season. And the finale was probably the best finale I have seen. I would recommend giving this another try.
  • The Good Place - I cant relate to this... I love this show.

+1 to these. Both started off pretty good, and semi-realistic, then just completely went off the rails to completely unbelievable...

The X-Files. Once Mulder was no longer a regular and Scully was teamed with the other two agents I started losing interest and stopped watching.

some of these shows were never meant to last as long as they did. The story just didn't need 5+ seasons to tell. If ratings are good enough, they'll keep churning out episodes, but the quality drops quickly after a couple seasons.

Homeland wrote itself into a corner from the onset, but they did an admirable job of pivoting (for a while at least).

Only 1 vote for this? I just started season 3 and am still all in. However, a friend said she bailed on it later in the series. I try to find shows with multiple seasons so I don't have to re-invest.

Anyone else on this one?

I am on season 5, and I do feel it is getting a bit repetitive. However, due to the loss of a certain character this season, I am going to finish it to see what happened. Depending upon that, I may tell my husband to finish it without me.

LA Law - I don't recall how much I actually watched, but I had been watching it for at least enough episodes to have some interest in it. Then came an episode where some gal lawyer walked into a scene with this big smug grin and saying something to the effect of how the "new administration" would [do something], a reference to the recently inaugurated Slick Willy ... felt political, so I turned it off and never again watched.

Much more recently, whatever the show was called with Keifer Sutherland as the sole survivor who gets elevated to President ... was a pretty good show in the early episodes, but at some point liberal nimrod-ism became much more evident, and I checked out.

I don't watch much TV because of the overt political bullcrap they feel the need to inject into their shows. I did enjoy all of 24, all of the new version of Battlestar Galactica, have typically enjoyed all the iterations of Star Trek, and will be watching the final season of The Man in the High Castle soon.

does it count as "bailing" if you just like got distracted and never came back to finish it?

I actually came here to say The Walking Dead. It just got to be the same stuff over and over... nothing ever changes. At some point it just became gratuitous violence.

Heroes. I don't remember why. It just became uninteresting.
Glee. Got tired of the fake high school drama.
Empire. All of the petty bickering over the same stuff again and again.
BBC Sherlock. I don't know if they actually released any more after the last one I watched, but I don't care. I'm not picking it up again.

Seems like a trend of if things don't change, if people don't grow, if the writers are making up more and more outlandish situations because they can't think of anything else, it's time to get out. There are a few more I stuck with just because I used to like them so much or I knew the series was coming to an end. Game of Thrones and Man in the High Castle are among those.

While the criticism for the Americans presented here is all valid (mostly regarding the awful Paige and the awful Paige storyline), I wil counter with:

1. Keri Russell is one of the hottest women alive and I would watch her in anything

and

2. The series finale really is phenomenal

Arrowverse - First 2 seasons of Arrow were legit. When the Oliver/Felicity relationship drama became the focus of the show, I stopped watching.

There's been a good handful of shows that I've shut off. The walking dead, ballers, new girl, the good place, orange, are just some I can remember.

There's also plenty of shows that I've started to watch that I've immediately turned off when you could blatantly tell the writers political leanings. New girl was one during the 2016 season when they went out to canvas for Clinton. There was another show, I can't remember the name, about a family on some trip or something ingot like 4 episodes in and the political agenda came roaring out.

I really don't have a problem with others political beliefs but for the love of God stop letting it shine so much on TV. There's other people in the world that don't want to see the blatant bias.

Blackish- We really enjoyed the show thru about season 3 or 4 but man it got preachy. The wife and I got tired of being told how all the problems in the world was because of us white folk.

We did but it felt like the early seasons they really poked fun at all stereotypes for all races. That was funny. It just seemed to get very SJW especially the episode right after Trump got elected and they we sooo scared. It was never the same after that.

Some people clearly pulled the rip cord on shows pretty early, which makes me wonder if you ever liked the show from get go. I understand shows like Dexter or West Wing or Lost that had considerable drops in quality or direction after seasons 3 or 4 or 5. With those you stick with them hoping they find their former glory, until you realize it wont. But with some of these examples, it makes me think some people took a couple seasons to realize they never really liked a particular show to begin with. In which case, what made you stick with the show as long as you did?

A great derivative of this thread would be "shows you wish you gave up on". What shows did you finish and by the end were like "****. I'm never getting that time back. What a waste."?

This show technically doesn't qualify since it's only had two seasons.

Also shouldn't qualify because it's one of the best shows on TV right now.
Watching Succession is a miserable experience. Awful people, ridiculous acts committed by all of them, and just nothing redeeming. I bailed after 4 or 5 episodes. Right after the father pissed in his sons office.

It is similar to breaking bad to me. I don't really care what happens to any of the characters and the over the top situations aren't interesting.

Breaking Bad is my favorite show ever. I think I just really don't like "serious Adam McKay" stuff (Big Short, Vice).

How I met your mother. It's the First show I started watching with my wife when we were dating, so it was something we did together.

It got to the point where I started getting anxious around 7 because I didn't want to spend 30 minutes watching it

Watched This Is Us with my wife, until I bailed when it picked up again two weeks ago.

Dropped Man in the High Castle just over half way through season 2.

Dropped Succession after episode 7 or 8.

Quit watching due to suckage:
Walking Dead - kept watching hoping it'd get better... gave up.
Simpsons - basically replaced when Futurama started
Scrubs
Heros
Lost

Finished but shouldn't have:
Game of Thrones - I refuse to acknowledge the final season as cannon
Dexter - anything after season 4 is garbage
Boardwalk Empire - should have quit after season 2
Sons of Anarchy - got insultingly pretentious after season 4/5
How I Met Your Mother
That 70s Show

Quit/restarted watching and somehow got better in later seasons
Breaking Bad - got bored and quit twice, didn't realize it was building an awesome story
Family Guy - seasons 6-9 are terrible
The Office - anything with Sabre was bad, final season was alright

Watched several seasons because my now-ex-wife was prego and in doing so proved we would someday divorce:
Desperate Housewives

If they would have ended it with the mother dying, it would've been a great, memorable series finale. The last 5 minutes ruined the entire series for me, and I won't even watch reruns because it pissed me off so much.

Heres a pro tip - you're never going to regret giving up wasting time watching a show you dislike. If said show picks back up you will hear about it and can always go back and watch missed episodes.
