Didn't see it listed so I'll go with the worst possible choice for a wedding first dance song that some people still make because they don't pay attention:

Nobody Knows Me - Lyle Lovett

One - U2
Have always loved this song. There is so much there and the band is vague about the driver of this one. Everything from relationships crumbling to AIDS has been discussed. I have always thought it was a call for humanity to stop "counting coup" so to speak and come together and carry each other and help one another out. It always felt to me like they were calling out religions for not living up to their messages of love.

I'm convinced that El Paso by Marty Robbins is about a hothead murder that's obsessed with a girl that isn't interested in him. He kills the cowboy that she was interested in and when he returns the cowboy's friends return justice and he hallucinates Felina finding him and crying over him. He's just a stalker and the cowboys were the good guys.

What you're positing - is that Felina wouldnt "whirl" when he arrived, but fact she would "hurl".

Every Breath You Take-The Police

MOST Police songs are both dark and misunderstood. I think for a pop band they write incredibly deep dark thought provoking stuff but everyone just knows them for the sound and some of the choruses, etc.

They have a few that are just fun or positive - De Do DO Do De Da Da Da for example and Walking on the Moon. Maybe even Wrapped around Your Finger but that can have a dark edge to it based on interpretation.

But many many well known songs are about deep or dark issues:

Every Breath You Take - is about obsession to an unhealthy degree.

Don't Stand So Close To Me - is about trying to avoid the temptations of an inappropriate student teacher relationship. interesting when you consider Sting was a schoolteacher.

Can't Stand Losing You - breakup results in a suicide

Roxanne - a man in love with a prostitute and he wants her to stop, it's actually unlikely that she does though

King of Pain - depression

Invisible Sun - about the struggles in N. Ireland and an IRA hunger strike

Message in a Bottle - loneliness and then the realization that you are not alone because everyone is lonely.

Murder by Numbers - about a politician revelling in the ability to eliminate his opponents or even commit mass murders

So Lonely - obvious

Driven To Tears - about the suffering and starvation in 3rd world countries at the hands of the powerful globalites

Spirits in the Material World - well it may be government holding us down from achieving spiritualness or it might just mean we are materialistic and fail to achieve that

Synchronicity I and II - not so "dark" but certainly deep....about the Jungian concept of "acausal connecting principle," whereby seemingly coincidental events were held to have an underlying relation as an explanation for ostensibly paranormal occurrences. Devolves into some vivid imagery of suburban industrial life.

Walking in Your Footsteps - mans path to self destruction by nukes

Every Little Thing She Does is Magic - on the surface he is just overly enamored with a woman such that everything she does is perfect to him, but he is frozen by the fear of rejection so it's kinda sad too in the end

there are a bunch more but you get the idea.

My favorite band btw.

Not completely off topic, but my father is a huge ZZTop fan and never knew what the song Pearl Necklace was about until I explained it to him.

lmao...... wow.

well that is kinda funny. Particularly because I have a saying about ZZ Top I told my son when he was old enough (he is a huge classic rock fan and 24 now).

I told him "if you don't know what a ZZ Top song is about, it's about sex. Unless it is blatantly about something else (TV Dinners, Cheap Sunglasses) then it is really about sex."

examples - pearl necklace, tubesnake boogie, gimme all you lovin, big shiny nine, la grange, give it up, legs, got me under pressure, tush, i want to thank you,

Escape (Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes

It's about a guy who is bored with his wife and decides to cheat on her with a more interesting woman. He responds to a personal ad in the paper and they set up a plan to meet at a bar and then run off together. The girl from the personal ad turns out to be his wife who was also bored with their relationship and wanted to cheat on him.

Well, actually....
I think it does become somewhat of a love song (or at least about what happens in most long term loving relationships) because they're both separately longing for something more but then realize they both wanted that. It's about not communicating enough before to see that.

Edit: sorry, meant to have the smirky icon, because totally not trying to be an a-hole
